How to Solo Over Chord Changes - 3 Approaches 

I am an advanced player and instructor. This is the best, clearest, and most concise instruction I have seen on the internet. No excessive chatter or guitar wakery. Just pure music instruction. Bravo!

Mate... Concerning this topic, there are alot of lesson videos on RU-vid taught by some seriously respected guitarists, but I can honestly say that after watching this video, yours is the best I've studied thus far. The way you break it down and explain everything just really worked for me. I just had that "Aha! I finally get it!" moment. It's a pivotal moment in my playing. It's all finally "clicked" for me. I've gone from meandering the fretboard and playing by ear- with no clue which scale I was playing or even the key of the song I was soloing to- to assembling all the pieces of the puzzle. Namely, know all of your chords first, including bar chords, open chords, and power chords. Second, learn the major and minor pentatonic scales for each note- and learn their positions on the fretboard. Third, develop a rudimentary knowledge of arpeggios. Fourth- and this is where this outstanding lesson comes in- learn the NOTES that make up each individual chord being played in the background. The root, the 3rd, the 5th, the 7th, etc. You can then put it all together with attention to phrasing and ACCENTING the rhythm in the background. Point/counterpoint. You can then learn how to polish up your playing through technical skills like vibrato, bending vibrato, bending, hammer-ons, pull-offs, slides, etc. All of a sudden, that intimidating fretboard with all those notes becomes amazingly tamed. Years ago, I could competently play by ear- but I had no confidence as I lacked the essential knowledge- and knowledge is POWER. So, THANK YOU for this great lesson!

Thanks! I see/hear chord tones as the "safest" target notes. They are a logical first step in creating meaningful soloing phrases. However, I'm in the process of making a video that will explore color tones not voiced in the chord and how they can offer different emotions.

I've been playing songs for years and have studied theory as well which was at times challenging to link together with actual playing. I just saw this lesson and I have to say; this is by FAR the absolute best lesson to advance me to soloing. It clearly lays out how to link things together. I’ve seriously been confounded about the subject. I’ve played rhythm for years using these, and other, bar chords readily, but have wanted to solo. I’ve even taken lessons for a few months and have gotten nowhere; except realizing I’ve been wasting money. Most teachers drag things out to maximize their earnings. IMHO. Thank you!!!!!!!!

These are great for a better understanding of how chords and scales relate to each other. In the heat of battle however the note and chord names simply become patterns on the fretboard that you should know by heart. The fourth method is The Eye and Ear Method.

Wow! This is an awesome AHA moment lesson. As a visual learner, I found the superimposed intervals to be a brilliant enlightenment to each strategy. In pursuit of adding more melodic phrasing to my soloing, I mostly chased triads and larger chord shapes maybe not fully understanding intervals. It also helps me find more dissonant double stops on the fretboard where a single note bent into harmony is another cool trick. Thank you so much!

The only one lesson I found for finding the RIGHT notes in a guitar solo!!!! I always played some parts of the RIGHT scale over a chord progression but sound wrong. Just because I didn't knew how to chose my solo notes properly ... thanks a lot!!!

Just used what I learnt in this video to break down the first solo on GnR’s cover of Knocking on Heavens Door. Something I’ve been able to play for years, but could never compose or break down. Literally every note is a 1st, 3rd or 5th from one of the 3 underlying chords. Thank you for the epiphany!

wow this is exactly how i approach improvising. this is easily the best video on soloing over changes i've seen so far. im a teacher and professional player. and i check out these videos just to see what people are teaching online. this is the most accurate way to describe playing over changes. lots of other BS on youtube on this subject im sorry to say. as far as youtube, dont bother looking any further than this vid if ur serious about learning how to do this. this is the foundation to more advanced stuff. this is step #1. basics. if u cant do this, u wont be able to take on more and more complicated stuff.
