The majority of guitar players, when asked to solo over a progression, will typically choose the minor pentatonic scale as their go to selection of notes. This is a great choice, however you will find it will eventually become repetitive and uncomplimentary of the chords behind what you're playing. In this video we will fix these problems by learning about how to solo WITH chord progressions versus OVER them. You will learn about which chord tones to aim for and where to find them. In this video I have used the chord progression from John Mayers "Slow Dancing In A Burning Room", and is particularly inspired by his Live In LA Introduction, as well as Mateus Asato's use of double stops and triads.

Hey man, AMAZING quality! video-wise and content-wise, keep it uuuup I have a question: how do you see both the CAGED layer and the pentatonic layer at once so easily? When I follow a chord progression it takes me forever to find all the shapes over the pentatonic box I'm playing, and let's not talk about when I change that box... I'm I supposed to memorize all the CAGED shapes for each chord the same way we all memorize all the pentatonic positions? Or maybe memorize all the combinations between every CAGED shape and every pentatonic position? I want those layers to merge and I don't know which path I should follow
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 4 года назад
Thanks! They’re both the same thing, once you truly understand CAGED. CAGED is just a means of seeing intervals easily and being able to visualise the fretboard. Once you can do that well, you’ll be able to see all pentatonic, scales, chords, arpeggios etc eaaasily. The path you are looking for is explained thoroughly in my CAGED Fretboard Visualisation Masterclass, linker in the description/on my website. It’s a truly enlightening class, which has changed my whole perspective and understanding of the instrument.

Dude your channel is amazing ive been watching so many videos. Im not sure where to start with it all tho it all seems overwhelming. What order would you recommend watching your vids in and also what general order should guitar be learned in?
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 5 лет назад
Thanks man! Good question. Unfortunately, that’s the catch with RU-vid. There are soooooo many wonderful things to learn, but where do you start!? What’s the most appropriate order? Only a good teacher can answer this, because they’ll be able to constructively guide you in the right direction as they get to know your ability. For example, if you booked a Skype Lesson with me, I could see where your weaknesses are, what needs focus and attention, I can help point you in the direction of your goals, as well as help you achieve them. Since I know nothing about you at the moment, I can’t be of much help right now unfortunately ☹️
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 5 лет назад
Also I’d like to highlight that there is no “foolproof” order to learn in. It really depends on each persons capabilities, ability, interests, and goals 👍
@drummerboy1296
@drummerboy1296 5 лет назад
@@DarrylSyms yeah Im realising that with youtube, saving loads of vids then not getting round to them etc. Where can I get info on your skype lessons, a bit of direction on what to do next would be great ot do you have a more structured program?

So is the idea to play a note or notes from the upcoming chord before the chord change?
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 3 года назад
That's a small takeaway from this video, but playing notes of the chord that you're playing over is a fundamental takeaway
@StephenAndAshling
@StephenAndAshling 3 года назад
The passing notes you are using, are they all notes within the "parent key scale" framework or is every time you change chord the scale changes too? Does that make sense? 😂 So if you have an A major and do you use the A major scale to get to, say the 5, E And then using the E major scale to get back to say the 4, D. And then the D major scale to get back to a chord tone of A? Or Does the parent scale framework remain intact? So your using the A major scale to get around no matter the chord but just landing on a chord tone of the 4 and 5 respectively?
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 3 года назад
Partly both are true. In any case, there are 7 notes that belong to each key. It’s only the order of those notes, or rather FUNCTION, that changes the “tonality”, “scale”, or “chord tones”. Function is the key word here. Regardless of scales, there will always be 7 notes that are in key, but the function of those notes change to reflect the context (chord) that is being played at any given moment.

This was beautiful! " how do i see the shapes so quickly" .... well i suppose there's not only the CAGED system. I suppose you also see your root notes all over the fretboard, on all strings...do you? I've been using the CAGED system for quite some time, but it takes too much brain processing to find the chords in a live situation. Is it because i only know the roots on the E and A string? or is it because i should work more on the CAGED system?
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 3 года назад
Thanks! Nope, it’s all CAGED. CAGED is seeing all root notes across the fretboard. It sounds like you need to do some serious CAGED studying 🙂 I’ve got the perfect masterclass on my site if you’re interested in a streamlined and detailed practice regime. 10/10 recommend! ✌️

Just discovered your channel recently and love it. Just wanted to ask when you use the caged, do you change the scale for each chord? So Cm pentatonic for Cm and A pentatonic for A and E for E? Or do you just keep Cm and the same scale but focus on the different chord tones for each chord?
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 5 лет назад
The latter of your message is the correct answer 👏 The only reason why the scale would change is because of things like a change in key, or modal interchange. I’ve just posted a few videos on CAGED so be sure to check them out! 🙂
@tyroneholmes6354

So am I correct in saying that the A major chord will have quite a few notes that exist outside of the C#m pentatonic scale even though it's in the same key? Also do you do Skype lessons?
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 5 лет назад
Tyrone Holmes correct - A has notes outside of the C#m PENTATONIC scale. However it’s notes are still within the C# MINOR scale 👍 The C#m, A, and E are all diatonic chords of C#m. I do give Skype lessons too yes, feel free to get in touch with me on Facebook (facebook.com/darrylsyms) ✌️

@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 5 лет назад
Good question! It’s a real mixture to be honest. If I’m just noodling for fun, it’s mostly finger memory/shapes. But if I’m trying to be melodic and play with intention, I spend much more time thinking about the intervals and chords that I’m outlining 🙂 Rarely the absolute notes though - notes are almost useless, intervals = power 👌

Great lesson! I'm a bit confused as to when you stay playing over c# minor and you just target the chord tones of the changes or when you change scales entirely for each chord?
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 6 лет назад
It depends how you look at it really. I am changing scales when I change chord, however the scales all contain exactly the same notes so I don’t even consider it. Targeting chord tones is the moral of this lesson, but remember that those chord tones are intervals within a scale, whether that’s the scale that’s associated with C#m or any of the other Chords I played.

@wss33
@wss33 3 года назад
At 3:32 you changed the scale. That's a major scale, you're no longer on the C#m pentatonic.
@DarrylSyms
@DarrylSyms 3 года назад
You misunderstand. The key is C#m. Relative to C#m, those notes are 4 > 5 (the hammer on). But the topic of this video is about soloing with chords, not just using C#m to noodle around. Consequently, different chords or notes from the C#m scale will have their own corresponding triads, arpeggios, and modes (NOT scale). I have no changed scale throughout this piece. That particular major scale you are referring to is simply a demonstration to how I can locate “maj2 > maj3”. Watch the video again. Remember, everything is in C#m, but the function of each note changes depending on the chord being played for each bar.
