for two people only, i would use the product over the sum.(axb)/(a+b)= 5.45455 hrs and for any quantity use the reciprocal method 1/(1/10 +1/12) BAAM you got it. these methods are used in parallel resistor in electronics too.

please explain why this works. I mean, why exactly do you put 1 over the number of hours that it takes each and over the total? This needs explaining.

No screaming eagle s***! I'd love to know as well. I'm sure there's a reason, but allot of math teachers believe in teaching plug and play rather than trying to engender any real understanding. Sadly, that's what we have here. Gladly, on the other hand, there are allot of other work word problem resources on the internet.

The reason we put "1" in the numerator is that if it takes someone 8 hours to complete a job, then they complete 1/8th of that job in 1 hour. If another person takes 6 hours to complete a job, then they do 1/6th of the job in 1 hour. If we want to know how long it will take them to complete the job, then we combine the rate at which the first person is working (1/8) with the rate at which the second person is working (1/6) and set it equal to 1/x to show how much of the room they're completing together they're doing in 1 hour, assuming they are to complete 1 job of that type. If the problem said "Maria can paint a room in 4 hours and Joe can paint a room in 3 hours, how long would it take them to paint 2 rooms" the problem would be 1/8 + 1/6 = 2/x

1st equation is X/10 + X/12 = 1 LCD 60 then add 6x + 5x = 60 so X=60/11 or X= 5 5/11 = 5hours and 5/11 mins :) I'm grade 8/13yrs old

Question 16 shortcut: If you simplify (1/A) + (1/B) = (1/x), and solve it in terms of x, you will come up with the result of AB/(A+B) = x. So therefore the solution is just ( product over the sum ) of their work speed. That is 10(12)/(10+12).

So irrespective of the task, we are looking for the combined rate, which will tell us the combined time. If the task is denoted by X then the rate for Maria is X/10 and that of Kayla is X/12. The combined rate is X/R where R is the time they take working together. So X/10 + X/12 = X/R. We can divide by X and that gives 1/10 + 1/12 = 1/R

This is what I do in cases like this: (1/a) + (1/b) = 1/x 1. I first take a+b and put it to the left of the equation 2. Then I take a*b and put it to the right of the equation like this: (a*b)/x 3. Using the denominators of this example, it would be this: 10+12 = (10*12)/x 4. Now we separate the x like this: x = 120/22, resulting 5.45 So, no LCD is required here.

I had to ask google why the known variables are set as denominators, because I can’t learn a technique if I don’t know WHY it works. 1/(hours to complete) expresses each person’s time-to-complete in terms of work done per hour. You’re then converting the combined per hour rate to total hours required.

Same. I really dislike just being given a formula. It helps in the short term, but I want to know why so I'm not just memorized NG something. Same with the quadratic equation for x. It's good to know how to complete the square to derive that formula to begin with.

@mathclasswithterryv1589
@mathclasswithterryv1589 8 лет назад
+Hmoob Tojsiab Hello, and thanks for your question. The common denominator is the LCM Least Common Multiple of all the denominators. So I take all of the multiples of 10 and 12 and x and find the first (lowest) one that they have in common. In this video, I show another method where you list all of the prime factors and cross out the duplicates. Other videos in this series might help, so keep watching! Terry V

what if its a problem that has one persons time to do something and the total time of two people to do soemthing together but not the time of one of the people.
@dougwarner59

just use algebra to rearrange the problem from: 1/person 1 time + 1/person 2 time = 1/(unknown)total (1/10 + 1/ 12 = 1/x) to: 1/total - 1/person 1 time = 1/ (unknown)person 2 time (1/5.45 - 1/10 = 1/x)

In problem #16, if Maria can pick 40 bushels of apples in 10 hrs, then that means that she can pick 4 bushes in 1 hr. Her rate can be known as 4 bushels per hour, and her portion of work done in 1 hr can be written as 4 bushels/40 bushels. Similarly, if Kayla can pick 40 bushels of apples in 12 hrs, then that means that she can pick 3 and 1/3(written as a mixed number) bushels in 1 hr. Her rate would be 3 and 1/3 bushels per hour, and her portion of work completed in 1 hr would be 3 and 1/3 bushels/40 bushels. Since they decide to work together and start picking up bushels at the same time and neither of them leave early, then we can set "T hrs" as the amount of time it'll take them both to pick a combined amount of 40 bushels of apples.(4 bushels/ 40 bushels) * T hrs can be the portion of bushels picked by Maria in T hrs, and (3 and 1/3 bushels/40 bushels) * T hrs can be the portion of bushels picked by Kayla in T hrs. All that's next is to combine(add) their portions of bushels picked in T hrs, and set them equal to a combined portion of 40 bushels/40 bushels. Therefore: (4 bushels/40 bushels) * T hrs. + (3 and 1/3 bushels/40 bushels) * T hrs. = 40 bushels/40 bushels. Now we just solve the fractional equation to find that T = 60/11= 5 and 5/11 hrs. This means that they took 5 and 5/11 hrs, or 5.45 hrs, to pick a combined amount of 40 bushels of apples. 40 bushels of apples represents the total amount of units required for this type of job, and 40 bushels/40 bushels equals to 1 full job since 40/40 = 1
