Introducing the "Toolbox" method of solving projectile motion problems! Here we use kinematic equations and modify with initial conditions to generate a "toolbox" of equations with which to solve a classic three-part projectile motion problem.

Start every projectile motion problem with the Displacement Equation (DE) and the Velocity Equation (VE) for both horizontal and vertical directions. Next modify the equations to reflect your known values - creating a toolbox! Then solve for your unknown quantity. Good luck!

To find Yo without having time though, don't you need another equation, V^2 = Vo^2 + 2a(X-Xo)? I think that would be Voy^2 + 2a(Yo) = 0 simplified with your variables

Combing textbooks and the internet for an equation specific to your situation is usually a frustratingly fruitless endeavor. Instead, start every projectile motion problem with the Displacement Equation (DE) and the Velocity Equation (VE) for both horizontal and vertical directions. Next modify the equations to reflect your known values - creating a toolbox! Only then will you have the right equations you need to solve your problem.

For peak height, there's an equation I find easier to use in this case: 2ad = V^2 - Vo^2. And it become even easier because V = 0m/s when finding peak height. a = -9.8m/s, d = the peak height. Hope this helps :)

Thanks so much! Made my day knowing that I can understand this concept a lot better now (please tell me that you're a teacher- you're definitely a lot better than mine!). Just a quick question, the formula you used was s=1/2at^2 + vt + s. Isn't the formula just ∆y(or s) = ut + ½at^2??

I was also stumped on this for a while. He adds the S to the left side of the equation because it is a problem where the projectile is launched from a ledge. Therefore we need to add the height of the ledge to the vertical displacement.

@kastieldj
@kastieldj 5 лет назад
Depends on the direction of motion I think. If you are moving away from the centre of the earth (up) gravity is not helping you. Whereas, if you are moving towards the centre of the earth (down) gravity aids you. Also depends on how you set the directions, which you should do for every physics problem.

@AlchemistOfNirnroot 8 лет назад
+Sourav Ghosh Pretty much the same thing. List all the horizontal and vertical competent information listed downward, SUVAT. Some information is already known, horizontal acceleration is zero whilst vertical is -g (given that 'up' is taken as positive). Also, at the maximum height final velocity is zero (or initial if considering the right hand side). Then select the correct equation with the variables you know and one unknown. Give me a example question if you want.

thank you trying to teach my grandson how to solve projectile problems for his A level physics, English AQA. Your Video was excellent brought everything back after 30yrs since I taught this topic. Agree the yellow marker was rubbish but your explanation was life saving. Thank you.

Really good video. Will pass it on to my students. It is always good to have more than one approach to any problem.
