MIT grad shows how to solve any quadratic equation by factoring. To skip to the shortcut trick, go to time 6:11. Nancy formerly of MathBFF explains the steps.

The shortcut trick ("The Magic X") helps you factor any tough quadratic that doesn't begin with x^2 but instead begins w/ 2x^2 or 3x^2, or 4x^2, etc, so you can then solve.
1) IF QUADRATIC STARTS WITH X^2: It's faster to use the normal method for factoring in this case: trial and error. Ex: x^2 + 4x - 12. Find 2 numbers that multiply to the last number, -12, AND that add to the second coefficient, positive 4. First make a list of all pairs of #s that multiply to -12. Then check which pair also adds to 4. Write factors & solve by setting each = 0. Solve for x.
2) IF QUADRATIC STARTS WITH 2X^2 OR 3X^2 OR 4X^2, ETC:
A) First check if leading coefficient (2 or 3 or 4, etc) is an overall constant you can factor out of every term. If it is, factor it out first, then use Method #1 above to factor the X^2 expression that's left. Set factors = 0 & solve.
B) If a constant can't be factored out evenly from every term, it'll be faster & easier to use shortcut "magic X" method instead of Method #1. See it explained at time 6:11 in video. Set factors = 0 & solve.

Can anyone help me? I'm trying to solve 8y^2 - 8y - 6 , using this method, but I keep getting stuck. I did two numbers that multiply to give 8 * -6 = -48, and add to give -8. I got the numbers -12 and 4. I put -12 over the y coefficient, and simplified to get -3/2. I put 4 over the y coefficient, and simplified to get 1/2. But now, writing this as a bracket got me (2y - 3)(2y +1). When expanding, this doesn't get 8y^2 - 8y - 6. However, setting each bracket to zero and solving, finds the correct values of y. This is where I'm confused.

Not a good method in my opinion and not a math proven one, since you have to guess the solutions. Really, how would you solve the quadratic this way, if coefficients were not small integers? Why not use the formula that uses the discriminant (b^2 - 4ac)? It is a simple way and helps in all cases...

Anyone watching should be warned that not all quadratics can be factored and require a different approach. Watch videos of 'completing the square' which will work on any quadratic (she has one). Nothing worse than spending several minutes trying to factor only to realize it's not factor-able. In real life you can get some large and nasty number combinations.

1:56 Why do you assume that the factors which multiply to -16 and add to 6 are integers? This is indeed the case in many "textbook problems" where the author engineer the expression to factor into "pretty round numbers" but not necessarily the case in real life. The general way to factor is finding the roots of the polynomial (for 2nd degree polynomial there is a formula, there are formula for 3rd and 4th degree polynomials as well, but not for n>5 degree polynomials).
