The title sounded too ambitious, but the first minute proved it was no joke
@NoahKellman
@NoahKellman 4 года назад
Thanks, William- I hear you haha! Yeah to be fair, anyone trying to sound like Art Tatum is a bit ambitious... but it can't hurt to study his playing, try to understand it, and come up with ways to work on his techniques. In the end, it'll just inform our own playing in unique ways, which I think is the point anyway.

The fact that you understand the logic behind Art Tatum's playing and you can break it down for us mere mortals is proof that you're a replica of him.

My pleasure. Yeah, Tatum is a difficult subject to cover- I did my best to break it down into manageable and digestible information that we can apply to our playing quickly.

You’re really an amazing pianist. I grew up on Art Tatum. You’re the only one I know who can teach it. I never thought it was possible to play like him. You make it look really easy!

I always admired Oscar Peterson for his genuine respect for Art Tatum despite his own obvious exceptional ability. Your tutorial demonstrates a similar 'modesty ' in as much as apart from the extremely helpful teaching elements, you clearly belong to the top drawer in your own right! Thanks for sharing.

….forgot to add - Towards the end re: “reharm on ii-V-I’s” there is a misspeak on your video as the resolved I chord is E flat (not B flat) major. (See also the erroneous text accompanying the video.) This is simply a minor “speaking” mistake for any of us, I’m sure, as you actually play it the right way - plus the rest of video is really fabulous!

Noah thanks for this video. Even approaching Tatum’s extraordinary technique is a difficult task to be sure. Dave Frank has presented some material on Tatum as well. But where his approach, your approach and method book analyses fall short is by failing to give references to specific tunes he recorded. At this point in his interpretation he did this and give a demonstration. The very general ideas you are presenting are helpful but could be better if applied to a specific tune and set of chord changes. Of course there are several good books of Tatum transcriptions out there but they also fall short in my opinion because they often do not include his best stuff when interpreting lesser known standards like “So Beats My Heart For You” or “Don’t Worry About Me.”

Hey mason, good question. Believe it or not, I like to tap my foot on all four directly on the pedal. I love how it adds a little sustain to the bass notes, then releases the sustain so the chord hits quickly. Make sense?
