There are few artists with as diverse of a range as David Bowie. Throughout his career, Bowie consistently pushed the boundaries of sound, songwriting and style; always with great success. To help craft his vision, Bowie enlisted numerous guitar wizards throughout the course of his career including Mick Ronson, Carlos Alomar, Robert Fripp and Nile Rodgers just to name a few. In this #PotentPairings, we're investigating tones from distinctly different parts of Bowie's golden years and how to use common pedals to capture them. Watch this video and nail some of Bowie's most iconic tones. Click the link for more information: goo.gl/wMi2Ma

I have to say that you missed the mark on this one. There is a clarity to Ronson’s tone that was not on display here. He did toe the line between a thick bass response and a wild treble tone. I would consider his sound to be these 2 sounds competing at all times, with the treble side winning just a little bit. It almost sounded like he was double tracking himself sometimes.

There is several layering done on Heroes, and Robert Fripp makes use of the feedback in a very masterful way, adding textures to the melody. When playing the song's melody with one guitar it will always sound kind of empty. I also don't think E-bows existed back then, I might be wrong. That just places Fripp on a whole different level.

The EBow or ebow is a brand name of Heet Sound Products, of Los Angeles, California, for the original type of monophonic handheld electromagnetic string driver, invented by Greg Heet in 1969, first introduced in 1976, and patented in 1978. The name Ebow stands for "Electronic Bow" or Energy Bow) (often spelled E-bow in common usage).[1] The EBow is a battery-powered electronic device for playing the electric guitar. The EBow uses a pickup - inductive string driver - feedback circuit, including a sensor coil, driver coil, and amplifier, to induce forced string vibrations. The Ebow is monophonic, and drives one string at a time, producing a sound reminiscent of using a bow on the strings.[2] Thank you Wikipedia.... Possible Fripp may have had one, I know he's a master of various techniques, maybe he didn't need one...

Steve Stewart-Sturges Yes Fripp is a very unique player. His guitar playing on the album Scary Monsters is my favourite work done by him. The intro to Kingdome Come is also a good example of those long held notes that only he knows how to.

That would have been incredible...! That guy is on another planet, so lucky you got to see him... I've seen quite a few of the prog rockers over the years but never had the sonic pleasure of Mr. Fripp!
@mdcesana
@mdcesana 7 лет назад
There was an article in Sound On Sound all about the recording of Heroes, you're absolutely correct that he didn't use an ebow: "Everyone who's played the song with Bowie since then has had to use an E-bow to duplicate it, but Fripp had a technique in those days where he measured the distance between the guitar and the speaker where each note would feed back. For instance, an 'A' would feed back maybe at about four feet from the speaker, whereas a 'G' would feed back maybe three and a half feet from it. He had a strip that they would place on the floor, and when he was playing the note 'F' sharp he would stand on the strip's 'F' sharp point and 'F' sharp would feed back better. He really worked this out to a fine science, and we were playing this at a terrific level in the studio, too. It was very, very loud, and all the while he was playing these notes - that beautiful overhead line - Eno was turning the dials and creating a new envelope and just playing with the filter bank. We did three takes of that, and although one take would sound very patchy, three takes had all of these filter changes and feedback blending into that very smooth, haunting, overlaying melody which you hear." Makes it all the more impressive! Full Article: www.soundonsound.com/techniques/classic-tracks-david-bowie-heroes

Surprised I didn’t see SRV on the Let’s Dance one. He did most of the main guitar riffs. It doesn’t event sound like it’s a guitar making the “duh-duh-d-d-duhduhduh” part, probably a synthesizer when you listen to the actual song. But the SRV guitar riffs are much more pronounced than the other.
@stilldisorder

SRV only did the leads on "Let's Dance" and the delayed effect was done in post production. Nile Rogers is playing that main guitar rhythm. He came REALLY close with the delay setting he used.

I mean no offense to the guitarist really, but after hearing Moonage Daydream for many years and then this cover of Mick's ending solo is painful to hear, and when he kicks in the echo its just like "adding echo won't help it sound better, buddy" . I really think that back then guitarists like Ronson and many others used to worked on their vibrato and the acurracy of their string bending to deliver an expressive solo, something that I believe is missing here.

What a pathetic joke - Mick Ronson used a Mk. 1 Tonebender and a wah.
@stilldisorder
@stilldisorder 4 года назад
Mick Ronson really didn't use the Tonebender much until after the Ziggy Album was released. That whole album was basically a turned up Marshall with a wah. Thus, it makes sense that the catalinbread pedal was used. Also, while I think a Lovepedal Bone Tender or EQD Tone Reaper would have been more appropriate, Mk1 TB's are considerably much harder to find. I think that would defeat the purpose of this series.
