Mick Ronson was amazing, he was the foundation that Bowie built his career on. Don’t believe me? Just listen to the stuff Bowie did before he worked with Mick - as good as some of that early stuff was. I love the albums the “The man who sold the world” and “Hunky Dory” as well. Ronson was all over those records. And then there was Mick’s production work, beginning with Lou Reed’s brilliant “Transformer” album. Such a talented man, it’s tragic that he died so young and relatively unknown. Thank you for making this video.

One of my favorite Guitarists. Ronno was a brilliant player. He could rock out and rip out killer riffs or play a beautiful sensitive solo with equal ease. On top of that he was a decent, genuinely nice man who remained humble in spite of his talent. I was lucky enough to see him live twice and he was great! Eternal respect Mick, R.I.P.!

Ronson and Bowie were absolutely magical. Ronson had no idea exactly how legendary he was and that cost him. He didn’t get “ripped off” at all- he knew how Bowie operated- where he’d come in, motivated ones talents by leaving them to their own device...and then... Moving on. Bowie even allowed Ronson AND TSFM, full rights to all of Ziggy, which they continued to ride that wave as much as they could, when they really should’ve been taking advantage of the opportunities that availed them right then- as opposed to riding that proverbial diminishing wave. That’s WHY Ronson was able to make the statement firsthand, about the sudden demise of Ziggy being the right call. It was always going to be a temporary thing- Bowie never hid that. For crying out loud- listen to the lyrics and he tells you he ending the band! Ronson was such a tour de force on his own, in a full conclusive sense because he wasn’t just a phenomenal musician, he produced tracks that most have no idea he did or was the master of (Lou Reed was a perfect example)...yet they recognize the genius in the mix. THAT was Ronson. Bowie was the ear and guide, but left any talent exactly where and who it was within- on its own....and just did his best to cultivate the naturalization of those raw gifts. Just as there will never be another wonderful-gifted human as Ronson... There will never be another innovator as Bowie. ❤️ Btw- You summoned Ziggy beautifully.✌️

Ronno was a gifted Producer also ... he was responsible by suggestion for the middle section of the John Cougar track 'Jack and Diane' where the Gospel Choir sings - he had his hand in so many records and so much music. He was, is and will always remain a Guitar Legend!

Loved Mick on "Aladdin Sane", a cornerstone album for Bowie. This was a particularly unforgettable period in music-time along with Mott the Hooples' music.

Ronson's music from Stardust sounded like music from another planet the first time I heard it...it was mindblowing...

In the stage show Turn and Face the Strange John Cambridge who was working with Mike Chapman at the time tells the story of how Mick was reluctant to head back to London it was John who approached Mick on the field to tempt him . I can recall back in 68 at a Rats gig (St Martins Hall North Road Hull) Mick hadn't had the Custom for that long and was still getting used it but couldn't get on with the low frets (Fretless Wonder )..I doubt many people know that he used to carry talcum powder in the case which he put on his hand then would run it up the neck because it got sticky when playing and that solved it ......Being a lad from Hull(17 at the time) saw most of The Rats gigs they were "The Band" and as so many say he was humble and a truly great guy...sadly missed...Oh and he never lost his Hull accent lol

More like Width of a Circle...of Tone.. Mick's work on Aladdin Sane is criminally underrated. I've been ripping him, Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick, and Robert Fripp off in every single band I've ever been in.

"Cracked Actor" is a stone-cold classic. It speaks volumes that DB had the song in his playlist for many decades. "Billie Porter" was another killer song. At the peak of his powers, Mick was up there with the very best guitarists of the period. He left far too early.

Yes Mick Ronson was a brilliant guitar player and Bowie knew exactly what he had. Sad to see he is hardly mentioned he was so underated but helped a lot with Bowies rise to stardom.

it wasn't Bowie that turned up as Ronson painted the lines on the rugby pitch, Bowie was still in London and Mick was asked if he would go to London to meet him....... Mick used to cut the grass outside our house, I used to date a girl who lived 3 doors away from him, met hi a few times, even after he joined Bowie, he was a humble and great guy who had time for many people, always honest and open, very generous too.

Rescued an Album that was in trouble of being Rejected by the Record Company. Mick Rearranged the Song Jack & Diane and played Guitar on it & Helped on Several Songs. Ronson played Guitar Piano String Arraignment’s & ARP on the Ziggy Stardust & Transformer Album. Just Listen to Reed’s Vocals & Ronson’s Piano & Strings on Perfect Day. They are Perfect

I saw them live in Manchester last but one ziggy concert. Mick had his guitar going straight into a fender twin amp. No pedals as far as I remember. Great vid btw.

Michael Schenker did that cocked wah thing for his solos a lot. I've always dug Mick's tone on the records. Never been much of a Bowie fan but the Stardust stuff is great. I play guitar and always appreciate a unique approach.

Holy Crap! Owen used the Rectifier! I... Did not see that coming. sounded amazing! great job knocking out some Bowie. I was very surprised to find out that i actually love David Bowie. i went with my ex (who's a Bowie freak) to go see Holy Holy in Denver shortly after Bowie passed. but they were fricking AMAZING! those songs sound soooooooo good without all the crazy orchestration and extra instruments. who knew? not i. just guitars, drums, sax, and singing. blew me away.

I d/loaded the ISOs for Ziggy & S/Gette city yesterday & listening to the guitar tone, I thought, this tone is familiar - I loaded a rock man in my Kemper, took off the chorus, verb & comp & it's amazing how close it is, I guess Tom Scholz was a Ziggy fan as well! I'll tweak it a bit with a 1073 plugin later, great job, thanks

HI..Funny your Dad was playing at the first big concert I went to..Cactus ,,Badfinger..The Faces at the old Boston Garden..1971-72..Badfinger was excellent...DH

The first album i ever bought was `Space Oddity` when i was 13, it actually flopped big time on its first release as did `The man who sold the world`, but it did better on its second release on the back of the singles success. I think the single got to number 2 or something in the early 70z. I had about 7 or 8 Bowie albums and even tho i like all the albums from 70z to early 80z, to this day the ones featuring Mick are still the best in my humble opinion.

Great job on the song at the beginning. I needed a strategy for playing this song on guitar for the tone. I used to keep my wah pedal cocked when I was in my first band mostly because it cut through the “volume wars” with the other guitarist. Congratulations on the drummer of Badfinger being your dad. I’m a big fan especially the song Baby Blue. I’d like your take on the tone for that song. Badfinger certainly deserved to be treated better by their management then they were. The Recto sounded fine to me

No matter how legendary the Ziggy Stardust stuff is, I always felt Ronson played and sounded best with Ian Hunter.

Gees Owen, you continue to surprise me with your singing, you're using upper parts of your register here I haven't heard you use before to very good effect. Plus you have an uncanny knack for across the board vocal mimicry, that's quite rare. All the work you put in is amazing. Ken Scott is generally right technology is a mixed blessing and should be used sparingly. My first album I went in I was a total novice and the engineer said: "right, first of all we'll auto tune your voice", straight away i say "NO WAY!", then I wanted a genuine lo-fi 1920s sound on a Bessie Smith cover i did and he just took some tops off, I was like: "No, I want 1920s sound like Bessie Smith!" and he just compressed it a bit, in the end I kicked him off the desk and turned the treble on the hi hat / tambourine to 2 and the bass on the kick drum to 2 so it sounded like a trash kit and said, "right, that's a good start on the drums, see what I mean?". In the end he did a mediocre job on that song, a few other decisions I let him over-ride me because I thought he knew better. When i took it to the mastering guy (a man who does rock bands and blockbuster movies) he understood where I was coming from and we had to do so much correction, he was like: "your rhythm guitar is to loud on this track, your drummer's too compressed" and i was like: "yeah I was complaining about that in the studio but he over rode me and i was too unconfident of my own ear." I'm an average amateur producer myself but I know what sounds good: the genuine sound of a good musician and production that compliments it. And if the musician is average coach them to do the best take you can get and then use trickery: a general rule is excessive studio trickery is only needed to polish turds

It is "[Is There] Life On Mars? Demo · by Mick Ronson" Mick switches heavy flangy rotary tones to thick and crunchy blues shuffle just incredible. Please take a run at this tune! Damned good job man. Funny thing. I listened to Ronson era Bowie this morning while picking up my bud and driving to work. I really like the guitar tone, he called it a honkin' tone I think, that he got out of his rig with a cracked wah to boot. I thought you did a excellent job on instruments and vocals. That's cool as hell that your Dad was the drummer of Badfinger, love that band. I read that David was just as upset as Mick about the pay the band was receiving and they approached the management about his pay, not sure about the rest of the band. The management kept telling them it'll be okay don't worry about it. Mick finished the tour with just as much money as he had when he left out. Like you said, a real shame. I don't know how true all of that I said is, read it in an article that was quoting an interview with Bowie in later years when asked about his time with Mick Ronson in the band. Cheers man.

Loved hearing Ken Scott ... it just reinforces why I try to get the best sound recorded right up front. Forget about "fixing it later" or re-amping dry guitar. Make it sound the way you want it to sound NOW. And if Ronno recorded DIRECT, then so can I.

Here is a quick tip. I went to the Spiders tour in Seattle. I sat in front of Mick to figure how he chording various songs. When he shifted to the "D" chord to do the hammeron he was doing the D in barre form. Everyone misses this.

All right then, here we go and bear with me here. If I were to meet Ken Scott, this is the question I would ask: " What is that creaking sound at the beginning of The Bewley Brothers from Hunky Dory?" Crazy right? It almost sounds like a rocking chair, that song is perhaps my favorite from David. Jesus, the strings on Life On Mars were arranged by Mick, backup singing, etc. he was the consummate musician. The tone of his playing, you always knew it was Micks. I would've not minded if he had one day just said " The Hell with it" and gone back to gardening and stayed with family and friends. And that's the problem, it didnt work out that way. I still fucking miss him

Listening to Ken Scott was absolutely fascinating. Also there's nothing wrong with Mesa, they make some amazing gear. That being said I'm biased as I just recently purchased a mesa 2x12 and a Mark 5:35 amp.
