How to speak like a leader. Leadership communication skills often boil down to four key differences when compared to the average person. FREE 7 Instant Tips for Confident & Composed Public Speaking

How leaders communicate:
1. Leaders speak concisely. They figure out what the heart of their message and leaders talk clearly and concisely. Developing good leadership communication skills means getting right to the point. This is the key to most executive-level communication. Leadership communication skills often boil down to conciseness.
2. Leaders can speak outside of their own area of expertise about the value of other areas of the organization. In contrast, individual contributors often get entrenched in their own personal background of knowledge (e.g., IT, engineering, etc.). Leaders understand and can speak about the value of all of those different areas. This is most noticeable in groups. A key group leadership skill is speaking outside of your expertise background. Good leadership communication skills mean moving beyond self-advocacy and speaking about other areas more fluently.
3. Leaders speak a level above individual team concerns. How leaders communicate differently is also by focusing on the coordination and strategy between and among teams to help groups work toward common goals.
4. Leaders can speak about virtually every task to the overall goals of the business, the overarching priorities of the entire organization. Leaders communicate this way (a) because they think this way, and (b) because their communication matches their priorities. As a result, others hear them and say, "Oh, yeah. That's how we work toward this goal." Again, this often comes out in group settings. When it comes to group leadership skills, good leadership communication skills means reminders about the bigger picture their individual work supports. That's how leaders talk most of the time.
Now you know "how to talk like a leader." Put it into practice right away.

Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my mate got excellent success with it.

My mom said that she: "had all chiefs and no braves", meaning we're all the boss, or leader personalities. I've found that when I'm to the point & concise, the way I like to communicate, people consider it rude & blunt.

Can you do a video about being a leader of an non-profit group where the members are volunteers. How do you engage them and let them be motivated when they lack it?

That's a little too specific a topic for me and I don't know much about it personally. But, off the top of my head, the *_transformational leadership_* approach sounds like it would make sense for that. I have a video on that.

Nice points made and I would add that the presentation of leadership is dependent upon the breadth of the knowledge of the dynamics involved in achieving the objective(s) desired. And that is what I believe describes CONFIDENCE that engenders the degree of support that can attain the impossible.

Good talk but not all leaders are concise. Some go on and on because they are very eloquent. They should be concise but not all of them are.
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 3 года назад
True. Some leaders have enough other strengths to make up for being long-winded. But, when leaders go on and on, they usually will receive negative feedback about it.

Hey Alex, I'm a few months into my first job, and this sounds really daunting. Where do these leaders get all this knowledge? Is there a magic hole or something where it comes spouting out, and they are not telling me about it? This is like studying the course lecture notes for exams, only to find strange things that you have never seen before come flying at you when you open the question booklet.
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 4 года назад
It takes time. If you're new, just focus on being great at your job for a while. As you get better, try to learn about the broader issues on your team and in your organizations. Just keep learning and look for ways to add value. Watch the credible people who have been there for a few years and see how operate. It takes time. Be patient and keep growing.

Great content - thanks! How do you deliver candid organization feedback to a new executive without sounding petty or siloed?
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 6 лет назад
Hi, David. Excellent question. It really depends on a lot of factors. But, I'll give you the suggestions I've often given clients and even used myself as a starting place. First, I'd always start by going through the proper organizational channels for upward feedback if there are any. If not, I'd meet with the executive one-to-one, if possible, and have some extremely concise talking points prepared. I'd also have a one-page version of my key points with data to back up my point of view to leave with the executive. But, most importantly, I'd make sure I offered a solution to whatever issue I was concerned about and I'd express willingness to be part of that solution. The talking points would look like this with about one sentence each or so. "There's an issue I'd like to bring to your attention. I've notice a problem with X that is hurting morale plus [insert details and data] . . . The simplest solution to this is X . . . As a first step, we could X . . . And, if it is okay with you, I'd be willing to X to get it started." Of course, I'd make sure I researched my butt off to prepare for pushback and provide any other relevant details. I'd also make sure I was emotionally prepared so I was the picture of professionalism, composure, and humility. I hope this helps.

Hi Alex first of all thanks a lot to share this video with us it means a lot I have just one question In leadership sometime I gets really overexcited to do things and to lead team. My energy level gets so high which makes my tone of voice bit high with motivation and with too much humour which makes team apart from me cause of my energy level gets on peak and they feels what’s going on with Harry and makes them apart from me i don’t know how I overcome on it?

Learn to direct your energy to your end goal. Be clear on the purpose of the message, meaning, what you want the listeners to receive from your message. Stay calm. You can practice staying calm by meditating or by reciting a mantra.
