This is fascinating. My grandma was Panamanian but she never taught my mother and aunts and uncles how to speak Spanish (they were born and grew up in Jamaica). I'm grown now, and learned some Spanish in school. But wish I learned Panamanian Spanish. Better late, no?

Not to shabby. Your Dominican accent could still be heard when you spoke in your Panamanian tone. Good job. Your video was more representative of Panamanian Spanish spoken in the city. If your were to travel to Chiriqui its a extremely different tone. Panama 🇵🇦 is a very fascinating country. I love my country! A lot of the English we speak comes from 2 source, the North American and from the English speaking Afro Caribbean's who came to build the canal. Also, Panama was actually part of Colombia that's why we share a lot of our culture and language with them

My grandpa was raised living his whole childhood in Panama and when he was an adult decided to get American citizenship and was actually in Vietnam. He spent a lot of time alone before he died in 2014 i remember him speaking Spanish and yelling at me in Spanish when he was angry. He died without anyone speaking his native language. My mom doesn't know Spanish because he had my mom and her siblings taken from him. But i am going to learn and this is so helpful.

I would like to know how do you find your information on the various specific accents? I plan to move to Panama and would like to find audio or conversations where I can hear it more. Most of the time language material give you general areas and not as specific as you get. How can you find enough material on each to be able to actually be fluent in one particular dialect. Or at least to understand a particular one. Thank you.☺️

Interesting video. It's neat to see the similarities between it an Caribbean Spanish. I've read articles on PR and I think a lot of their pronunciations comes from the African Roots. I wonder if it's the same in Panama. I'm not sure if they have as strong of an African history as PR or DR?
5 лет назад
Actually a lot of the caribbean Spanish style comes from the canary islands. If you research the canary islands they sound VERY similar to caribbeans. Of course there is african influence from the descendants, but yeah. It runs deep.

@, thanks for the reply. I'll have to look for videos on the Canary Islands. I'll try to find that article I was talking about as well. From what I remember they were mentioning the African languages from western Africa not having an "s" sound, so it was hard for them to speak, and eventually kind of phased out.

I highly suggest anyone that is interested in Panamanian culture🇵🇦 or the language to please search in Spanish, just because you will find more accurate representation as far as Panamanian food, culture, language, and history .. 🇵🇦 I think that there are some things that are misrepresented and it’s probably why there’s a little bit of confusion for some people that don’t know anything about Panama 🇵🇦. There are some people to claim that they are Panamanians and they have never been to Panama and they’re relatives have very very little roots in Panama only to the panama canal construction during the times of the early 1900s and that’s just about it. Some of them don’t even speak Spanish at all, or the majority that claim to be Panamanian. It’s probably why the Panamanian parade in Brooklyn has been changing or is fizzling out because Panama is being well represented during the Hispanic parade in the month of September in Manhattan. Some of those words are only spoken amongst certain people that live, particularly in the panama canal area, and sometimes imitated for fun by the youth. But in many household in Panama, especially out in the interior part of Panama, it is predominantly Spanish-speaking with very little mixing of English. A lot of people on this comment section may not even realize that because as I said before many people on here, haven’t even been to Panama and know very little about Panamanian culture.

@ ok so I couldn't find a workbook that was focused on LA Spanish, is it ok to use Castilian until I'm ready to learn the Colombian dialect? Also did you only use work books, media, and dialogue to help or did you take a pro class? Really I should be learning a Caribbean dialect cuz there's a lot of Puerto Ricans in Buffalo NY but the Colombian dialect sounds so smooth and clear

The English in it is from our grandparents that came from the English speaking Caribbean Island, not Puerto Rico.
