The dialect you’re using is definitely Puerto Rican. The accent however, sounds a little Dominican. But it’s pretty good. The S disappears.The R’s become L’s. The D’s disappear if they’re the last consonant before a vowel. You pointed out very accurate characteristics of Puerto Rican dialect. Nice job!

As a Puerto Rican I literally screamed out laughing when you did the cut scene to speaking with your mouth barely open, it was so spot on hahaha I think you did a good job explaining some things that some Puerto Ricans do when they speak! Obviously, like you already said at the beginning of the video, there are other forms of our accent so idk why everybody is so butt hurt but okay lol. Clearly you spend a lot of time around men so you mostly hear the male accent so what I feel like is lost here is the female accent which is perfectly fine! Love your video!

Constructive criticism, as a Puerto Rican I can tell the slightest differene between the Puerto Rican and Dominican accent. I notice sometimes you kind of start the right way but all of a sudden it kind of becomes Dominican. It's tough to be able to speak like Puerto Ricans unless you have practiced it for years but you not too far away man. You almost got it.

lowki, this is a dumb statement in itself LMAO Puerto Ricans do not at all talk like the rappers LMAO. And also that ghettoness you're ascribing is not a black thing. It's a "bro"-saying Rivera, Nuyorican thing. "Bro" is Latin, NUYORICAN, Rivera slang. Not white, not black slang and certainly not "Visigothic" in origin

When you said the thing about the differences of us rolling our rr's was really spot on. Some of us roll them and some us just don't. Some of us just can't roll them, we just can't do it, some people even send their kids to speech therapy to able to pronounce it correctly, most of us grow out of it but a lot of us can't do it. For example, I've never had problems rolling my r, but my brother still struggles with it, he can pronounce it correctly in some words but he just can't on others; my boyfriend just straight up can't roll his r's even if he tries his hardest, which just shows the differences in all of us

I didnt realize we have a pop in our speech, but once you showed the example, I heard it lol! Puerto Rican here, the people complaining "this sounds Cuban/Dominican, this is not a Puerto Rican accent blah, blah, blah" Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Cuban accents are not too different from each other because A) the islands are very close to each other and B) Our accents/Spanish came from Andalusia. It's true! When I was Sevilla, I was kind of shocked by the similarity between Andalusian Spanish and PR, Cuban, DR Spanish but then I remember a lot of Andalusians and Canarians (also Andalusian descendants) moved to the Spanish Caribbean islands. Granted, we have our differences but not by much.
6 лет назад
#Truth! Thanks for that lol. I've come across Puerto Ricans who sound just like Dominicans, and Cubans who sound just like Puerto Ricans. It really just depends on the person.
@lindamanuel9073
@lindamanuel9073 6 лет назад
True! I don't know why they're making such a big deal about it. Plus the culture is very similar to one another except Dominicans dance to bachata instead of salsa.

DR and Haiti is one island but split into two different countries. How is that hard to understand? If you put a Dominican in a room full of Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Haitians. Who do you think they gravitate more to? Hint: Someone who speaks the same language.
@robjackson5245
@robjackson5245 6 лет назад
Um, no Puerto Ricans are Spaniards, in the ethnic and legal sense of the term, not Andalusians or any of that, which implies indigenous Spaniards. Nuyoricans are indigenous Spaniards, non-white, "bro"-saying, Rivera, Delgado, Santos who speak the type of Spanish DJ Playero is known for, you know movie Latino Spanish. So yes their Spanish is obviously gonna be from Andalusia, Catalonia, Old Castile. A real Romance language, like French and Italian. Puerto Ricans and all other Spanish countries, -ez surnames, on the other hand, are white-skinned, sound like Frank Lopez from "Scarface" when they speak English. Spain obviously included. Their form of Spanish is a Germanic language. Not Latin whatsoever in roots. And all this is pretty obvious. I mean what bozo thinks -ez surnames aren't white by looking at them. Or that "bro" isn't Latin slang just by hearing how it sounds, and what bozo doesn't think it's Nuyorican, just by listening to how it sounds. It's pretty obvious when you hear of Nuyorican you think of "bro"-saying Latinos with last names like Rivera or Delgado. Basques who are the same related grouping as Irish = also not white.
@robjackson5245
@robjackson5245 6 лет назад
Also the idiocy behind the OPs statements seem to imply that Spain was created by indigenous Spaniards. Which is wrong. Visigoths created Spain. And did to the indigenous Spaniards exactly what British-descended Americans did to Native Americans. One quick trip to Spain will show you how obvious it is that Spain is 100% Germanic, and nothing Roman or Romance. And for instance their English accent sounds like that of Frank Lopez from "Scarface," the accent family to which Swedes, Danes, Russians, Brits, Jews also belong to. Not Andy Garcia's type of English accent.

Okay I have loads of questions. 1. Where exactly do you find the spanish podcasts or content geared towards a specific spanish dialect? 2. Do you recommend a teacher/tutor? 3. Do you go to spanish bars/clubs? If so how's the experience?
6 лет назад
Hola. Thanks for watching the video! 1. Google or youtube. Just type in The name of the country followed by podcast. You may have to search for a while to find the right one, but i have found plenty of great ones. Or check out this site. You can listen to any radio station from Spanish speaking counties around the world. www.radiowebsites.org/ 2. It really depends on how you learn. I'm not biased either way because I'm an online Spanish teacher and I see how People grow from my lessons, but I also learned on my own, because I hated the school's way of teaching. If you can teach yourself, then do it. If not, seek help. 3. I used to go to Spanish clubs. where I live now there are none, and I'm dying. But I hated the reggaeton clubs. It's just like going to a hip hop club. people get dressed just to stand on a wall. I love love love, dance clubs that play salsa, bachata, merengue, and cumbia. Those are the BEST. beautiful crowd, and so much fun dancing! It's always a good time.

Pero me encanta. Btw, di con éste video porqué me llamó la atención pero estaba buscando para aprender Inglés. 😘 abrazos, ya sé tus clases uno va aprender súper entretenido ❤ Gracias Dtb

Is funny how being from PR, I could detect 5 different accent on you describing one that are from different regions of the metropolitan area. I like the accents from the other side of the Island and center.
6 лет назад
Jaja. I know I missed a few accents, because I now have a PR coworker and she sounds more like a dominican than the accents that I talked about here. but hey I was just going off of what I knew about at that time.

Gracias Denali! It's always hard for me to imitate, because I'm so used to my Dominican accent, but I tried hard here! Thanks for watching!

You are spot on! My grandmother was from Ponce and she said her double Rs like a J and that's how I learned to say it and so I can't really roll my rs well. And everything else is how my relatives speak! :-) lol

Monica T. Rodriguez Don't "pigeon hole" all PR's linguistically. He's spot on for whom? The few people he's imitating maybe, but other than that he's generalizing. He's NOT spot on. If speaking for yourself and yours, keep it there.
@MonicaTRodriguez
@MonicaTRodriguez 6 лет назад
george a roman you're right, George, I was generalizing. I should have said, that was from my own experience. Despite the small size of the island, there are a lot of variations in pronunciations and terminology. My own parents have argued on what's the right word to call something. Thanks!

Can you do a video on how to speak like a Panamanian. Mi abuelo es de Panamá y quiero aprender cómo ellos hablan.

Sure I can. I can honestly say, that Panamanians talk like a lot of people from the Caribbean with hints of a Colombian accent. You'll find that a lot of the Caribbean rules apply to Panama.

Great PR accent.The only thing is a lot of people overexaggerate the r sounding like an l.It's very slight in most normal conversation,and many times it's almost like a mix between land r.The double rr that has the raspy r sound is more common than you think,but still most people roll the r's.Overall excellent video and pretty much spot on.

Some people don't understand what they are saying because they isolate themselves from other cultures. I love learning about othed cultures and not just the latin community. I even took French in High School. I love learning about different countries. I have a friend from Sri Lanka. I know some Indian words because in Sri Lanka it's somewhat the same. People just have to be Open Minded 😃. There is So many Beautiful Countries ❤

Awesome videos! Regarding Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Cuban Spanish, something else to point out is the much more frequent use of tú and its placement preverbally in questions. This is likely because of the elision of the s at the end of the words, leaving ambiguity regarding the subject of the sentence. For example: -¿Qué TÚ quiere, pana? (Instead of -¿Qué quieres? or -¿Qué quieres tú? found in more neutral varieties).

6 лет назад
