Evie.... I have been watching your channel now for years. I have several drop spindles and have been dreaming of the day when I could afford to buy my first wheel. Well, yesterday I was at my local yarn shop on an off day for sitting and stitching, and in walked a lady who wanted to sell her Ashford Traveller for a very reasonable price. I simply couldn't snatch it up any faster... Now, I have been cleaning it up and tightening the bolts and grinning the entire time. So, I had to watch this video all over again. Thank you so much for this channel and all the knowledge you share so freely. 🥰🥰

You helped me spin my very first bobbin!!! Even though it's crazy thick and thin, and over and under twisted, I finally have a continuous strand! Now I can finally spin my own Icelandic sheep wool. . After many hours of frustration with over twisting, bunching up at the orifice, breaking yarn, zero progress, lots of choice words, and ultimately giving up, I finally found your video. The step-by-step with the practice yarn is EXACTLY what I needed! Your cheery attitude and positive outlook are the icing on the cake to your beginner-friendly teaching style. THANK YOU!!

Hi! I'm an artist- painting, silversmithing, I design jewelry using semi precious stones, make my own glass beads, sewing (by hand and with a machine), making patterns, etc... just really love creating unique things with my hands. Life is truly wonderful when surrounded by arts and crafts isn't it? My Mom taught me to crochet and knit while growing up and I'm recently finding myself being drawn back into it. Ohhh my gosh, all the yarns, books, hooks and needles I've collected! lol 🤯 The hand dyed fingering yarn is my favorite.. I live in nw Colorado and there's lots of farms around to get wool and such. I have a good amount of silk I've saved too... Now I want to dye and create my *own* yarns. So, i'm just getting into spinning and guess what? This video was the first one to pop up in my "recommended for you" feed. I know it's over a year old, but I hope you see this comment still. I love your personality and the awesome way you teach and explain things. 🧶🌺 So I subscribed to your channel and am beginning a marathon of watching your videos. 🦋 Thank you so much for sharing your craft and for being such a good teacher. You know, if you lined up 10 people in a row and had them teach the exact same thing,There would be that *one* special teacher out of the bunch that truly get through, where I would go - "Oh wow, I really understand now.. I really do get this, yes!".. that one teacher (for me) would be you. So thanks again, you are very appreciated... 👍 Wishing you lots of success and happiness in your life- 🐑🐅🐾🕊️🌷🐝

So as someone who knows very little about wool, other than it comes from hairy animals and makes nice jumpers, I decided that it would be a good idea to make some yarn😂 Last year a mate gave me a bag full of fleece, this was to use around plants to deter the slugs but it didn’t work. It has been sat in the bag since so I decided I ought to spin it. Easier said than done! I made a drop spindle (Turkish) out of the wood pile and bought some cheap horse brushes to card it. Obviously with little clue about what I was doing. I posted the results of my adventures to my mates on WhatsApp, and one of them asked if I wanted a spinning wheel that his Grandad made years ago, to which I replied in the affirmative (I’m a great believer in serendipity and synchronicity). So I got it home and tried to get it up and running by tying a new drive belt. This was what you call a castle wheel I think, with a double pulley. Two pulleys, two ropes right? Wrong! I watched your vid on putting the driver belt on👍 perfect. Now to start spinning. Well as you can imagine it was a bit of a disaster, learning to walk before you run is very apropos. So this video and your other videos (and all the other people who have taken the time and effort to upload their own tutorials) have been very helpful. I have learned a lot. It would appear that the fleece I have is a bit short, so I may have to find another use for that, like felting, although it is dark brown so won’t take colour (natural dying of the yarn, no bleaches, using plant dyes and home made mordants is what piqued my interest in the first place). My mate with the fleeces also has some bags of alpaca, so I will have a go with that as it may be longer. I also bought some carding pads online, as the horse brushes didn’t work, but these were only little 4” dog brushes, but at least I know that the aim is to present the fibres to the spinning machine with the fibres brushed out and in line. It is a very interesting experience and learning curve, and your delivery and clarity of explanation, camera work and editing are superb, many thanks.

This was the best starter video I've seen. Thank you for the practice tips. I'm going in to do them now! I just bought my first wheel & am driving myself insane finding the wheel spinning forward then backwards (LOL) and ending up with spun spaghetti.....now I see why. What you point out about being able to spin onto the bobbin then also be able to withdraw the yarn back really emphasized focusing on tension & I also see what I've been doing wrong. Keep these tutorials coming. :) Thanks so much.

Getting my first spinning wheel today at the age of 67! A long-time dream fulfilled. Merry Christmas AND Happy New Year. This absolute beginners video was the start to many a good tutorial and successful spinning. Reading your blogs, it seems one should name their wheels for a better, close relationship. I've chosen two. First is Sara for the song "Sarasponda" learned in an elementary school choir. The second is Eileen for the 1840's Spinning Wheel Song. Honestly, so I could use Dexy's Midnight Runners "Come On Eileen." 😆

What an excellent video for absolute beginners. I am considering getting my very first wheel in the next few months, and I feel like you provided just enough information to get me started. I like the low-risk approach, where you start with getting the hang of treadling, then moving up to spinning yarn, and so on. I did the same thing when my daughter lent me a spindle, and I practiced on a single Ply yarn I had in my stash. She was amazed how quickly I got that hang of spinning actual fiber after. Just finished my first bobbin! I spun up 36 grams of a single using some pencil roving I had purchased and dyed over the weekend. I tried not to focus on the consistency (or even realistically the twist), my main goal was just being able to keep the wheel spinning and to keep up the drafting. The yarn broke a few times, but with minimal waste I was able to get the fiber attached again. Because the single I spun was so dark, I think I'm going to spin a similar amount of the natural fiber and then ply them together to hopefully get a really pretty two color plied yarn. Your video was super helpful!!

Thank you for these videos! I have a new wheel and completed one class on spinning. I got so much benefit from your teaching style. Know we will be “lunching” together for a while!

This is a GREAT video! I started to learn on my own, and it's really great to go back and see what I've learned incorrectly. :-) I'm going to watch your whole series, thank you for making these!

I have been fascinated by flax and linen for years. I know that good flax is expensive and difficult to find in the US, so I'm going the route if growing my own. Extreme? .... Maybe? So double drive is most likely the route I will be taking. These videos are priceless for the information they provide, but that's not the best part. Your enthusiasm makes my interest stay intact. Thank you so much for the motivation. It may take some time, but your weaving videos will be on replay when I get that far.😅

Working on getting a spinning wheel (at the age of 70) to make the beautiful rovings I've seen available into lovely yarns to knit into beautiful stuff to wear. Thank you for showing how spinning wheels actually work! Now I'll work on getting one so I can get started! Thank you, dear lady. Your videos are a great help to me, and I'm hoping to get started as soon as I can get a wheel. Yay!

JillianEve - First, loved your video. Your presentation is welcoming and gives us permission to "not get it" right off the bat. I've been spinning for several years and have a small traveling wheel that is both cool to use and a pain in the neck. It uses a direct drive concept (no drive band) and it's really reactive to stops and starts, which can make my plies a little janky sometimes, and the wheel can get away from me very easily, very quickly. Your reminders to slow down when necessary are very welcome. Spinning should be a relaxing and contemplative activity - maybe even meditative - not stressful. Thanks for your video.

Excellent teaching video. Just teaching no frippery fill in that is not relevant to the learning. Thank you. Greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much. I am a glass artist who can't help learning new things. I bought a loom last year and love it. I just bought a 12" used carder and my first spinning wheel, an Ashford Kiwi 3. It will be delivered this Friday. I think I will be watching your video a couple more times, and then a couple more when I get the wheel. So exciting!!!!

How exciting! I hope you enjoy your new wheel! I have a Patreon with more tutorials and lessons if that would also help you on your journey. If not, I have tons of free content on my channel too. Happy spinning! www.patreon.com/jillianeve 🌷💜🧶

oh my goodness, thank you so much for a simple but excellent explanation of how to start spinning 🙂 I've been sitting practicing with my piece of yarn, it's amazing I think I have it all together and then.....start thinking and my wheel goes backwards 🙂 I am looking forward to learning how to spin, and watching more of your videos. Thank you sooooo much for all this information

I am one of those people who _hates_ when tutorials have all these preliminary steps ... yeah yeah yeah just tell me how to spin!! But I have to admit: these exercises before I start spinning are exactly what I needed in order to make the first spinning go smoothly. As a bonus, I was able to use my practice time to ply some yarn that I haven't been able to use for knitting because it was spun the wrong direction!

Thank you so much for this video. I really struggled to learn twice over the last year. After watching this video, I now feel empowered and so much more confident. That's with only just using your technique for practicing with already made yarn!
