How to Split and Transplant Irises

Irises seem to be the forgotten perennial staple. In years past, there was never a farm without a bed of iris flowers. My grandma used to tell me about her long row of irises on her farm, all different colors. The reason for this is that irises multiply and need to be thinned out every few years. This meant everyone had irises to give away, thus all farms had this flower.

Irises are named after the Greek goddess Iris who was said to ride rainbows.
My irises are all the bearded variety: large flowers with a fuzzy beard-like texture and all come from my great grandma's farm, who I'm sure knew nothing about the Greek goddess.
After years of growth and blooms, the rhizome roots start to pile on each other. This means fewer blooms and not as vigorous plant growth. So every four or five years, it's good to divide the irises.
- Trim the leaves by about a third so the replanted iris will focus on root growth.
- Dig up each variety and separate all the rhizome roots. Inspect the roots and discard any rotten or diseased-looking ones. This is also a good time to inspect for iris borer. If infected, the rhizomes will have holes in the roots and rot. Discard these if found.
- Plant roughly a third of the roots back into the soil, keeping the roots just at ground level. Irises do not like to be planted deep.
- Water as you would for a new plant!
Once the roots are established, new leaves will sprout and the plant will be healthy! Share the unused irises you didn't replant with friends, neighbors, or plant even larger beds 😊!

Thank you. My mom passed recently had to sell her home so I dug up some of her iris and various bulbs to plant at my home. Can't wait to see blooms in the spring. Your video was super helpful. Thank you. May God bless you for sharing your love of Iris with others.

Thank you. I like not only how you explained how to do it, but also film the process as your doing. I bought two potted iris from Lowes. Wow, you should see them, they are huge. I squeezed the pot to lift it out of the pot. I can feel the Rhizomes inside. They are as big as yours. Easy, they break up by themselves. I'll be okay thanks to you. Good treats for good deeds. 1 lb of ritoni pasta, boiled, drained. 1-2 packages of Good Season Salad dressing= prepared per the package; tomatoes, broccoli, black olives-drained, cucumbers are optional, and dill weed. Salt to taste on the plate. Be careful, can be addictive. I myself am addicted to the raw air. Great day!

This was so helpful. I inherited some irises planted around a home I just bought and had no clue how to care for them or transplant them. Thanks for the up close how to and all the tips.

Thanks for your very helpful informative video. Whilst your Iris are more organised than mine, the process is what I. needed you to confirm! . Each of my Iris had formed into a huge clump as they had not been dug or split for 10-15 years. Only issue now is what to do with the many rhizomes left over!

Thanks for the video Kaleb. I divided mine about 8 or so years ago, and needed a refresher video. I see that you replanted yours in a circular form and I remember doing that as well, because they love the sun on their rhizomes? I will do the same.💚

❤ your video. I just moved to a house and found this exact iris bed condition. I really needed this video. My question is: some of the rhizomes are rotted yet have roots and leaves. Can I cut the rot off and plant the healthy part?

Plants shutter when I walk by. I literally kill everything (without meaning to, of course). Miraculously the iris' I planted last year survived! But I need to replant them in a different location. This helped tremendously! Thanks!

Im in Iowa as well and just starting with Iris plants. I wish I could find people who are in need of replanting and dividing their iris plants. I would be happy to help in exchange for Iris. I can't afford to pay five dollars s plant!
