Thank you so much. I remember when I was about 8yrs old, my mom had some irises in the back. I always cut them and watered them. One year I remember digging them up and spreading them out within that little strip of garden bed. How on earth did I know how to do that? My mom never worked in the garden. It was the only flowers we had. I remember being so happy that next year they bloomed! I guess that’s exactly when my love of flowers and gardens started. Thank you for finding that memory from your video here. I’m 64 now and I love to garden. But I have NO irises in my beds! What a shame. I bet I do next spring. Lol. God bless and have a great weekend. 💕👏🏻
Good job! Years ago I had a friend who was an iris hybridizer. Here are a couple tips he gave me. Cut the fans in order to direct energy to the new roots. Also remove spent flowers so the plant doesn’t set seeds. He also suggested planting three rhizomes in a triangle for a better effect when they bloom. Happy planting!
As someone who has been dividing iris like crazy over the last 5 or 6 years. My tip is to always cut them about 6 inches above ground before you start dividing them, it makes it a lot easier to work with and less overwhelming.
I should have read this first! I have a clump of what looks like 25 new irises all clumped within a 2 foot x 2 foot x 1 foot… I don’t even know how to move it without breaking it!
@@HildeAzul they are one of the toughest plants you can grow. I don't think you can kill them and you certainly ain't going to hurt them if you break them. I've got a a couple of clumps that I haven't divided in a while and they need it badly. Another good thing about iris is they don't grow real deep in soil, so should be easy to dig up
I needed this video and it couldn't have come at a better time. I have a patch of iris and they so need dividing. Thank you once again for the most detailed explanation on how to do this. I now feel confident to do this. Take care!
I just divided mine a few weeks ago. I had never heard about the 7 leaves...good to know. I just planted these a year ago and had plenty to divide and share with some friends. It cost me about $11 to mail and I used an ice pick to punch holes all over the boxes I shipped them in. Before I shipped them, I removed all the dirt and soaked them for a couple of hours in a 10:1 bleach solution. I let them air dry on a covered patio. I’m hoping they will grow for my friends because I enjoyed them so much this Spring! Oh, I also threw away the mother rhizome. Those I replanted have taken hold very quickly. I had to go back and add a little more soil (Purchased) in areas where the roots were exposed from settling in. Make sure you water too! In zone 7a, the first bloom came on my birthday in mid-April.
This is such a wonderful video! I live how you covered the process from beginning to end, and gave just the right amount of information without digressing. I can’t wait to watch your other videos. 🙏🏻
Loved the video. This is my first experience with deciding Iris. I had no blooms this summer. I inherited my Mothers home and gardens. I doubt they were ever separated. Thank you, thank you. 😃
Now I know why my iris don’t bloom. Planted to deep and I need to separate the bulbs. Thanks for all the information you give. Looks like I have a project this weekend
I inherited my mom's place about 15 yrs ago now, where I've been living since divorcing in '97. She planted Iris's here that I know most be 30 yrs old. Honestly they don't look like they've been divided ever to me, I've never divided them. Thinking it's about time, they too are blocked more now because of a tree over the yrs. Great tip about when to do it too. Always love seeing Mischa at the ready to help, and what a smarty pants.
I've watched this video multiple times and now I'll try it on my own irises. Thank you for the very clear instructions. Love your channel and IG. So helpful!
Thank YOU, bearded irises we have, since we bought the house, 20 years ago. So Many I will now divide. Will do a 1/4 acre of irises. That's how many we have. Thank You Again you inspired me.
Very interesting...usually when I divide & replant my irises I cut about 2 inches from the rhizome. I just cut straight across. I don't cut in a fan shape. I've seen other people do that and I don't expose the rhizome because I have too many animals/critters that run around and will pull them right on up so make sure they are good and planted and covered. Maybe it's the type of soil that I have are usually always amend with hummus and manure. I believe my zone 6b. I know that they've changed the ranges🤷🏾♀️. But I did not know about the 7 leaves means it will flower that is awesome 👍🏾👍🏾 thanks for sharing that information
That was great. Thank you. I have iris's that have not been divided for about 13 years. But they are doing great and don't have good drainage. But I need to get in there and divide.
I love your puppy. I thought I knew how to plant irises....wrong.....thank you for your tips. Mine are ready to divide and I am so glad I watched you....now to find the perfect time. Thanks for the tips.
I always take some leaves off to compensate for root loss, daylillies, sysrinchium, etc. Great timing, I need to do these I inherited with the house. They're up against a dark brick, west facing foundation. The poor things tried to bloom in February! I've got a sunny bank they'd like.
I was always told to wait until fall - this makes perfect sense - thank you so much!! I am jealous of your lovely soil - I work and work to improve my clay but with 3 acres it will never happen in my lifetime! ;-)
Moved here, zone 5a, 15years ago. Irises were here, I never separated them. Long overdue. Thank you for the excellent video; I learned so much & will now dig, divide, sort, transplant those irises 🤞.
THANK YOU thank you thank you for such a detailed video on how to do this.. i've always wanted to see a video that goes up close & slowly describes how to divide irises. and you just did!
Just basically stumbled on your channel . Looking for information on how to divide my irises. My 76 yo mother gave me a fairly big clump of irises from her iris bed. I was happy to get them, but unprepared for them as they were an unexpected gift. I brought them home, and place prepared. It was wrong time of year, I suppose. But I quickly put the entire clump in the ground. I got no blooms that , year. So I thought , next year. Then no blooms again, this year being 3rd year I was certain I would have plenty of iris blooms. I had 1 bloom. I figured out that they were over crowded when I got them ,so I am attempting to learn more. You have absolutely the best , easier, and visually show step by step how to do it. Thank you . I have subscribed, looking forward to more videos on different gardening tips. Thank you , you are very much appreciated.
Thank you for such wonderful information I only have 1 Iris in my garden here in Texas after watching your video I realized that it is planted too deep, maybe that is why it has not bloomed for me. Hopefully I can remedy that situation and have more success. I love the look of them however we deal with extreme humility my fingers are crossed 🤞
Thank you for sharing your expertise on dividing irises. I learned many points I didn't previously know. I will be using your method to divide and move mine to a sunnier spot soon. Thank you!
This is EXACTLY what I needed. I bought a house 5 1/2 years ago and inherited a property full of irises. They are overdue being thinned out. I have successfully transplanted a few, but was lucky.
Can you help me!? Can I divide them now..while some are blooming? Mine are cramped badly..I want to move the ones that aren't blooming this year. If I wait til end of summer I can't tell which are which, also. I want to move certain colors.
@@RunninUpThatHillh they'll be stressed but I just recently did the same thing, and I've been given permission to drug up lilies in bloom from people's yards, planted dead summer and they bloomed the following spring
Great technique and excellent explanation of the how and why. I went ahead and trimmed leaves last weekend due to LOTS of grasshopper damage - they are terrible this year in western Kansas! I do it first so it’s easier to place my shovel blade accurately. I’ll be sharing this video with my friend whose iris bed desperately needs splitting. Thanks so much and have a great weekend!
This was very helpful, I broke up a big clump of irises last summer and spread them all around my garden, even had enough to give to my neighbors. All of the transplants are now blooming! Thank you!
Wonderful no-fuss tips. Been wondering how I would divide my iris plants. They were given to my by our Monsignor in church (an Iris enthusiast). He has since retired and this is my memories of him 🙏❤️
Betty Jackson I’m in Oregon Zone 8. I’m doing mine tomorrow as well. We bought this house from an elderly gentleman in December, that has had minimal gardening care (the chain saw, mow, blow and go type) for 10 years! There are at least 100 irises that need separating.
All of your videos ar amazing with so much information, really appreciate that you provide names with each plant which really helps. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for this video! It is so much better to actually see it done than read about it! You explained it so well, and now I am looking forward to getting it done.
Thank you for sharing this video. There were irises planted on my property that I've been meaning to do this to. You said you didn't know why people are so intimidated by irises and i can explain why. Up until now, I hadn't thought about searching a video on RU-vid and had just read articles about dividing irises. Why didn't I look up a video on RU-vid? I couldn't tell you because I'm constantly talking about how you can do anything if you just watch a few RU-vid videos. Anyways, reading about how to divide rhizomes is like, what are these people talking about? I learn better visually so actually seeing what part of the rhizome is kept and which is disgarded makes the task feasible.
Thank you for this. Have a beautiful iris in the front yard that gets sunshine 6+ hours a day but I want to trim it down as it’s rather large.....now I know how to do that. Have a great day!
Thank you for this video. I got nervous when they broke apart and you could see the white inside part of the tuber. I was afraid I broke them when separating therefore they would not grow. Also, last year I separated a clump and buried them 6 inches deep like you would a tulip or daffodil 😂. I’m still learning lol.
