Interesting setup there. I usually go with 140 (64kg) braid then just a 120-150 yard topshot of mono usually over 100#. The main reason I do that is I feel like once that mono stretches on a big fish a time or two it loses it’s effectiveness. From the beach the stretch is magnified with how much drag has to be applied so we switch it out every trip. Bulk spools of good mono is super cheap so I go with the rather safe than sorry method and switch it out often. Great video though I am sure your hands were feeling it!
I just finished spoiling a big shark rod. I used 40lbs mono for backing, then 100lbs braid, then 80lbs mono, then finished it off with 100lbs braid. Thank you for the knot, much better than the double clinch. All by hand. Everything is incredibly tight.
Doing the old flip flop i see! Load it up with braid then put 300y of mono on top and end it there. It will prob fish better. You lost all the good characteristics of mono once you tie braid on top of that
Hey Robert, many like to place mono backing because it stretches on the spool and prevents slippage. If you tape your braid correctly it's not necessary. I like to use mono top shot for sharks because it is abrasion resistant.
Robert Tinker if you put the mono on first and braid second when your fishing and you get down to the mono it will snap because the braid is stronger than the mono
I take a long wood screw & flat fender washers. Screw your line spool to a fence post or anything thats permanent with a washer on each side. Then simply tighten the screw up to act as drag tighten it down to your preference of resistance and wind away goes on nice & tight that way takes very lil time & effort. Can also hook a drill onto handle shaft to wind it on that way for big reels👌.
I also just got an old 4/0 senator, I loaded mine with 80 lb braid main and 80 lb mono on top of that. Seeing this video, I assume that would be a good poundage for the smaller reel.
You should learn the FG knot for tying braid ti mono it’s a lot stronger than the knot you used. The knot you used will break at the loop in the mono in the knot
Hey got a question. Right now i fish and with the gear i have i can bring in 3-4 foot bull sharks all day. But there are bigger ones out because i have hooked into them but cant get them in. What would you recommend for bringing 6-7 footers on a budget. Also we have more the bulls, we have makos, blue, thrasher, and blacktip here as well.
I agree the senator 6/0 is a great option and the senators are as good as it gets for the price. At Academy sports where I live (Florida) just had the senator combos on sale for father's day and they were only 140-150 bucks.. And the senator rods, that it comes with, is actually a very tuff rod. I've had a couple different senator setups now and they really are great. In my opinion all of Penn's products are exceptional, especially for the price.
That is one heck of a man reel. This is for the big boys. No fooli'n around . This means some serious off shore business buddies. I saw one of these in an antique store down the block. I am starting to get psyched about picking it up. It's got some corrosion but should clean up well. I think I am getting the call of the sea . I better answer before I am gone . hahahaha. See you soon Mr. Tuna spoon hehehehe :-) . P.S. The guy who I will buy the reel from actually fished with Frank Mundus ( the character model for quint in the movie Jaws). So this reel is going to have some serious Mojo on it. I can hear Frank saying to me now in spirit . " Keep your fingers and hands away from the line when It starts smoki'n or you may come home that day with a few less fingers . No joke .
First - tape the spool and tie braid over the tape onto spool.... If you get close to the backing , having no knot isn't going to cut it. I always tape and then tie a knot over the tape.... to have a knot onto the spool is vital.
Nice tip. will the black tape hack work in a spinning reel also? do you have to guide the line when fighting a fish with that style reel? Keep em coming!!
im gonna go grab some mono and braid and try these line to line knots, if i dont do very well when i buy a senator then ill just have my tackle shop spool it for me.
Archery and Outdoors those things are called lugs or harness attachment points. there is one set to put one on a harness while shark fishing, and the other the closest to the rod is for rod clamps. a reel of this size can handle big fish but reel clamps also allow the reel the be clamped on to the rod and it is super strong.
trying to spool my new daiwa 8500 with 500 yds of 70 lb braid and then top it off with some mono, problem is I love my local tackle shop but it seems all places near me charge ridiciolous prices for line!! He said it would be $144 (they dont charge for spooling it, thats free) but online I can buy same amount for under $100 of daiwa J braid..which is top of the line or even power pro.
Great vid. How do you keep the line from stacking up in one spot on the spool when you are reeling in a fish? Particularly on the beach since you would have a few hundred yds of line out?
Thanks 4 the video....what kind of rod do you reccomend for that reel...getting serious about deep sea fishing in Galveston....beach and boat....not a very seasoned fisherman...mostly catfishing in lakes...been on a few trips at the beach...4hr charters etc....my wife caught alot of redfish...all i caught was catfish...lol..need some tips...thanks
If you're fishing Galveston you may like Team Hard Life's channel. He's a Corpus Christi guy, does a lot of LBSF but is the local youtube plug for fishing the Texas Gulf Coast.
Stupid question I've never understood this why do you always put mono filament line on top of Braided line. Can't you just put all braided line. I have 10/0 fishing reel
Mr. Josh Sir, another good tape for spooling a reel is the white medical "cloth tape" that is used in a lot of sports. Football, boxing, baseball.....etc. If you don't use it for anything else, you can find it in a medical supply store not too expensive AND 1 roll will probably last a lifetime of fishing. I am a little confused with your knot. I was expecting you to turn it around and do the same procedure to the other line you are adding to it. Am I thinking of another knot? LASTLY and you know me, When i saw the SIZE of the reel in your hands, I REALLY thought you were getting Serious about the "sewer fish!!!" lol Take care and Be Well my friend.
Great tip Dino, thanks for taking the time to share. You are probably thinking of a uni knot, this is the Albright, another great option is the FG knot.
hm, I use 100-150lb of dragand you spool the sharkreel with 100lb braid, but of couce I don't fish a senator and I'm always in a harness and even more important tied to a tree, a couple of sandbags or having some buddys holding me, line is 300-500lb, depending on mono or hollow and if I want to paddle out more than 200-300yds, reel is a 20/0 everol
Just a tip of advise next time spool your reel with the line coming off the spool on top not underneath and for spinning reels you lay the spool on its side with the label on top to spool it off the right way
Joshua Taylor hahaha. i was thinking of getting a daiwa bg 8000 and a tsunami trophy surf 12ft. i dont wanna spend so much on something ill barely use throughout the year
Woooo i use to spool my own conventionals but took too much time haha btw technically you shouldnt be having that usps tray. Thats federal property technically speaking.
Sorry bud good vid but you did the Albright knot wrong when you finishing it make sure the line goes through the loop the same way It came in not trying to hate just telling you so you don't loose any fish because doing it the way you did you loose knot strength
pointless to use 100ib braid... 80ib mono leader is weakest point why waste money on 100ib braid when u could put more 80ib braid and gain line capacity.... the leader is going to break off before the braid in this situation.
I know but what im saying is tha the 100ib braid is pointless.leader material should be equal strength if not stronger than the backing. why use 100ib braid when u could use 80ib braid and 80 mono and have equilibrium and gain line capacity increasing odds of landing a bruiser off the beach.
I think you are over thinking it a bit, I use a shock leader and 80lb is plenty sufficient, I will never use 80lbs of drag, therefore technically I could probably put 50 mono on top and be fine. The shark leader should have ample strength and length however.
a shock leader should be stronger than your braid backing.... Im not over thinking it... why use 80ib leader with stronger main line- why not use 80ib braid main line and 80ib mono leader... you would gain capacity and in the event a hammer or tiger grabs that bait u have excess line he can peel off and you save about 50-60$ on braid
I think that only holding on to the line does not get enough tension like that shark you talk about. The line digg into its self and you will have problems. Bad video. Sorry that just my opinion.
