Richard, After seeing you use this line in different videos, I purchased some on in both 4lb and 6lb, and love it! However, yesterday I had so many wind knots that like you said, I just gave up and went home. :( Thanks for taking the time to teach on such important subjects like spooling your line. I'm gonna a respool my reel today using your technique. There are so many voices out there ... but you're is one I have come to trust. God bless and tight lines!

I was taught never to spin the line off using an axial rod. You add a twist each turn doing it like shown with each turn of the bail. You are to allow the coils to unwind in the direction of the bail rotation by placing the coils in line with each other.

Yeah great video thank you Richard Gene TFM. I remember being taught to soak the spooled line on my removable spool from a spinning reel in medium hot tap water for about twenty minutes until the water is room temperature. This is from way before the internet when you still had things like pagers. Also, one trick I use to keep a steady light pressure on the line when spooling it is to let a hooded sweatshirt lay on the line on the carpet between the reel I'm filling and the feed spool. I do keep my feed spool placed horizontally I don't know why I was just told it's best and I always had good luck with that. I get great casts this way even in to the wind with very light lures. Keep fishing, keep building up our community of Fishermen and be good to each other.

Never heard of soaking the line, but I will try it. Thanks. As to re-lining solo, I have a 3/8" wood dowel. All my fishing line is kept in a milk crate. I pass dowel through one side of the crate, then through the spool, then through the other side of the crate. Peel off some line and thread it through another hole in the crate. This gives an even tension while spooling.

Richard here is a great tip for putting line on a spinning reel. BTW, I enjoyed the video. Get an empty peanut butter jar that these 1/4 lb spools will fit in and drill a small hole in the center of the side (about midway of the spool of line) and thread the end of the line of the spool through and the end can be secured with tape after you have finished filling your reel. Put the top back on the peanut butter jar and then you could hold the jar with your feet and apply tension on the line as you are rapidly filling the reel.

Thanks for the tip Richard - works great! I minimized the work getting the residual glue off the spool by spraying it with WD-40. After it sits for a while, you can scrape most of the glue off with a pocket knife. Another application of WD-40 and the rest of the glue washes off easily with soap and hot water.

Hi Richard. This is the best advice I've ever gotten about filling spinning reels. I used to spool up then remove the spool, strip the bearings, drag parts then soak the whole spool in hot water until it cooled, then re-assemble. Your way is well thought out and way easier. Thanks for the advice...and good fishin'........Bob

Richard you need to try this l! Splice your new line onto backing line just spool it on. NOW remove the spool from reel and soak it for fifteen minutes in a cup of warm/hot water. This will confirm the new line to spool and no line twist! More time to fish and no COLON problems!!

I thought I was the only one who soaked their line for days! Listen to Richard people this is the ticket! I accidentally at first left a huge spool of expensive 40lb mono (Momoi Diamond for saltwater) in a bucket of water for a few weeks. That line was as straight as it gets not even a bend! I spooled it onto large spinning reels and was absolutely amazed how it casted. Gotta spool the correct direction absolutely but people know that. Soaking mono for at least a week is the real deal.

Jeff Smith hey man I tried this and the line was still curly when I put it on my reel should I have let the line dry before putting it on ?? I pulled out out of water and spoiled it up
@jeffsmith825
@jeffsmith825 4 года назад
@@georgehaidar3963 normally no I like to spool the line on freshly removed from the bucket. What's interesting is even if you leave monofilament submerged in water for an hour it should loose some of the spool memory so for it to still be coiled after a long period is odd. The heavier the line the less effective it is but I've still found tremendous improvement in line up to 50-60 pound test as long as it's fresh. Was the line entirely submerged? What type of line was it? Was it new and fresh? The longer the line is on the spool the more engrained that coil is. This one has me stumped, I've been doing this for years and it always helps in my experience. The line won't be literally straight but it should remove 80% or so of the coiling I'd say. Usually it just looks wavy and never coiled when I do this.

Jeff Smith the line is a year old in the pack and it was me crappie hi vis 6 lb test
@jeffsmith825
@jeffsmith825 4 года назад
@@georgehaidar3963 very odd. Even 20 minutes in water should help some, guys have been submerging mono in water forever. I don't think a year would do it if it's been stored indoors. The only thing I can think of would be having it stored either outdoors, or in a garage where the temperature isn't controlled. Mono isn't the toughest line in terms of shelf life, it doesn't do well in hot or cold temps or in high humidity. If it was stored indoors you've got me stumped. Like I said even a short bath submerged in water should help uncoil the line. I've had spools that I've had indoors for longer than a year that have done very well in water. I'm really not sure.

I'm gonna try this "soak n spool" technique. I always used to spool up the line like this holding the spool with my feet and at the end hold the spool real tight and tie it with a swivel to the barn door and walk back n forth about 50 yards pulling drag and reeling it back up a few times until it behaved itself. But the line was always unruly until it'd saw water a few times. I can't believe I never thought of soaking the whole spool! I bet this came about because of a leaky boat or bad weather soaking your taclke box somehow for you to figure it out. Thanks boss!

Thank you Mr Richard Gene. This has been a BIG ISSUE FOR ME. I just bought new line also. I will be soaking it asap. I'll just have to wait to put my new line on though. You know what they say patience is a tree with bitter roots yet the fruit is sweet.
