Well i think we all know that he is gonna sell it anyways the next day saying something like "the best quality from Colombia, only for you my friend" 😂
So I recently learned quite a bit about rubies…. They’re so cheap the glass filled ones. I heard someone recently say on a video they had a ruby that wasn’t heat treated. It took me down a rabbit hole. Basically, and I’m oversimplifying and don’t know Jack about rubies except for this great documentary I watched that there are three types of rubies: - unheated - heated -glass filled They classify rubies according to something called the 4C’s and OT. The four C’s relate to weight, clarity, cut and colour. The OT is treatment of the ruby and o is the origin of the ruby. All of these will determine the price of it. Glass filled rubies are sometimes considered “composites”, because they aren’t 100% rubies. Heat treatment is literally a permanent process that is heating rubies in a crucible to improve their colour and clarity. Natural rubies can be somewhat milky in appearance which is why they treat them, but a good quality, unheated ruby of good origin (certain countries are preferred over others, like an Afghanistan ruby isn’t as valuable as a Myanmar ruby, or more commonly known as a “Burmese Ruby”) that meets the highest qualities of the 4Cs go for the most. While composite rubies that are glass filled are worth mere dollars for a 1 carat stone, there is a huge chasm between that and even heat treated rubies. Another awesome thing about rubies? They fluoresce under a UV light. The less iron in your Ruby, the more it will fluoresce. They are also one of the original gemstones considered worthy of royalty and trading, along with diamonds and emeralds and sapphires and a couple of others. And that’s all I know about rubies. That’s not true - in the documentary they showed us the bubbles you can see in a glass filled/composite Ruby and the cracks that form as well. *EDITED TO SAY THAT…* a few people have rightly corrected me. I said the four Cs and then proceeded to list three Cs and then a word not beginning with C. The four “Cs” are: - Cut - Clarity - Colour - Carat ….this is the one I mislabelled. I did describe it correctly, but I meant to say carat, which refers to the size and weight of the stone, which will of course, like the other “Cs” affect the value of the stone. OT refers to: *”Origin”* - where the stone came from, which again, has an impact on price *”Treatment”* - how the stone is treated, as in the case for rubies, refers to if it has been heated or if it has been infused with glass, which after reading the above, we all know devalues the stone and makes it a composite - not a true Ruby, but a composite of different materials. Thank you to those of you who caught this or asked about it and I hope this clears it up! I wanted to say that everyone on this comment thread has been so very kind and lovely, and you don’t get a lot of that when posting on RU-vid, so I wanted to say a big *_THANK YOU_* to everyone! ❤️ 🇨🇦 Expat living in the 🇬🇧
relaxing? definitely not. Interesting for sure though, and not to mention mildly infuriating. I kinda hate watching him totally rip these people off. But i gotta give it to him, hes great at what he does.
Another tip for rubies is a blacklight don't forget to get a blacklist flashlight for the handy dandy ruby finds lol plus I would never have bought that ruby look at the cracks and inclusions just with a camera and naked eye lol
Question I bought a parcel of Cheaper low low low low low quality rubies. I can find bubbles in like three or four of the 21 that I bought but I cannot find bubbles in the other ones. Is there another way of telling other than the fissures on the outside and the bubbles on the inside? I'm just trying to figure stuff out
I think the person that spends a significant amount of money on jewellery likely deserves to be swindled, especially considering where these ultra expensive gems come from and the quality of life the people that tend to mine them are. Give the money to a charity instead of blowing it on a rock.
Certain stones can crack, chip and even scratch but when you get a stone that looks like that its pretty obvious just holding it the things fake. I have a ring with an artifically grown ruby in it thats over 30 years old, the silver ring its in is beaten to hell and back but the ruby is still perfectly smooth
The diamond industry is different than the colored gem industry. Fine quality rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are actually rare. Diamonds are one of the most common gemstones on the planet. To put it into context, give me 48 hours and I can find you around a dozen 10 carat D flawless ideal cut diamonds easily. If you gave me 6 months, I’d say it would be a 50-50 chance I could maybe find you 1 fine gem quality 10 carat Unheated Burmese ruby.
Maybe do a video on what glass filled it's? Also, I've seen "S925" more frequently on 'silver' jewellery, but it doesn't have the weight to be sterling silver and 'gf' when it comes to gold. Maybe you could do a video on those as extra content too?
You should get a tiny jar with vinegar, dump the ring in front of the costumer, leave it for 1 minute.... And pull it out, dry it up, and show the costumer that the ruby is obviously glass filled. Doing so will obviously destroy the look of the ruby by showing off it's now internal spider webs that used to be filled with glass.
That shows oil filling. The acid, vinegar in this case when soaked for long enough penetrates the stone and leaches the oil out. Vinegar will not eat away a glass nodule inside a gem. You can distinguish glass filled from refraction as he stated in the video.

Hey avi, can you recommend a "good enough" gem microscope I can buy? I see you used a novax p-10 is that perfect for determining if gems are natural? Any other good ones that aren't super expensive? Thanks so much for the help
