How to Spot a Fake Scotty Cameron Putter

In this brief tutorial we break down the steps in spotting counterfeit Scotty Cameron Putters.
IMPORTANT: The MAGNET test is not fool proof and will not work with aluminum based models, but I called Scotty Cameron Factory and they confirmed that even though newer Scotty putters are made from stainless steel they still carry a light mixture of carbon that will weakly attract a magnet as demonstrated in the video… having said that counterfeit models can still attract a magnet so the only way to fully know is to send it in to Scotty Cameron and have them inspect it. Not sure who told you this but the type of high quality stainless steel in SC putters is not magnetic. Very easy to prove go and try it in a golf shop. Lower grade stainless still be firmly hole the magnet.

The magnet test ALSO does not work on 303 stainless steel models. I tried and it did not stick and Google says it's non magnetic...I almost accused my friend of selling me a counterfeit...

Scotty Cameron registers all his putters, and the registration number is engraved on the underside of the shaft, just below the grip. You can call them and they will validate a number, as I have done. If there is a number and it's not engraved, but stamped instead, counterfeit. If you're buying on line, just ask for the number. Caveat emptor.

It's a seven digit number, and you can call Scotty Cameron offices in southern California, like I did for one of them. The others came directly from my Titleist rep for our club. Those people will be very helpful, and trustworthy. They hate counterfeits and will do what they can to stop the flood from China. Those from China will have the stinky grip, a decal on the top of the shaft, and be aluminum. I will say, the Chinese do a pretty good job with the counterfeits.

I bought scotty kombi select, I tried to change the weight try screw it but i was shock because no screw around the weight. The weight just put and glue to the weight place and can not be screwed. Is it fake putter kombi??

Hi, I have purchased a scotty Cameron Newport 2 putter (2016) online. I tried to attach the magnet on its face the magnet does not attach. Does it mean it's a fake?

NOT AT ALL !!!...How is your putting with your SC ? THAT'S what's important...I'm not saying that it's very honest towards SC, but these putters are totally TO EXPENSIVE... There's more than Scotty Cameron on the market

have you try to customize your scotty and fail it? I try to burn it or anodize it all fail lol so I finally bomb spray it not easy to do like pro but cannot send to pro to customize as I'm in Laos lol cheers mate love your videos!

Hi, so I tried the magnet test on my Scotty and it didn't stick but my Scotty is black so I'm just thinking its a different material. I tried looking online but found nothing. Any ideas?

He's wrong about the magnet test, 303 stainless is non magnetic, if a Scotty Cameron is made with quality 303 Stainless steel then the magnet shouldn't stick.

Nope, that head is aluminum and therefore nonmagnetic.

Fakes come with the head shrink wrapped in plastic. And sticker facing wrong way. I know, I bought 2 of them. Lol only ever used one and putt well with it.

Ypu better check that again ! If it's stainless steel, the magnet will not stick. If it's a fake, the magnet will more than likely stick.

I almost did the same thing, but did a little more research/watched your video on my computer and noticed your annotation that's been added. I bought a 2012 Newport Select Notchback on eBay and got all in a fuss over the magnet test, lol. Turns out there's different types of stainless steel so the magnet test is kind of bunk all together. Any word on if a magnet should stick to a 2012 Newport Select Notchback? thanks,

+Rick Hogan You're correct, the magnet test is in no way fool proof. I found that the stronger the magnet the better he results. But I'm not sure on the notchback, when someone trades in an older Cameron to the shop the first thing I do is put a magnet to it... So I'll let you know if I come across one.

The part about camerons being magnetic is not entirely accurate, 303 stainless steel isn't magnetic. Do extensive research look a the serial number on the back of the shaft and call titleist. The putter head itself Titleist can't verify unless you mail it to them and it costs like $75

His discussion about material is not true. Not all genuine Scotty Cameron are 100% steel. To test whether or not the putter is genuine or not, simply try to remove the weight. If it unscrews, it's real. On counterfeit putters, the weights seem real, but they are not. It can not be removed.

It really depends on the 'quality' of the fake, some aren't bad... but even the good fakes feel nowhere near as good as the real thing. Thanks!

303 stainless steel is not magnetic. Your magnet in the vid is sticking to the weight in the base. Correct it or take down!

+John Moore Hey John, you are correct that 303 stainless is not magnetic, however I just talked to a person at Scotty Cameron and they confirmed that there is a carbon mixture in the heads that will give it a weak magnetic attraction (enough to hold a magnet). I promise you that the magnet is not sticking to the weight ports… I have a couple 2016 Select Newports here in the shop that are made of 303 stainless… I stuck a magnet to the neck of every one. I hope to make a video that explains this a little better than I did on my first attempt. Thanks for your comments.

It's not mine officer... I'm ahhh... holding it for a friend. The fake in the video was from a customer who actually tried to have us send it in to Titleist for warranty repair... he was not happy!

Not sure what part you think is incorrect? I explained in the annotation that even though stainless steel is not magnetic I called Scotty Cameron and they told me a strong enough magnet will stick because the heads still contain carbon… as demonstrated in he video. I can't say for certain that every putter will work (obviously not aluminum) but every one I've tested has a slight attraction. Lets not forget that this video was made to bring awareness to the fact that fakes do exist and it's better to be over cautious.
