FIND THE RIGHT PUTTER LENGTH
For some time now I have been interested to get on the SAM PUTTING LAB to see how the different length of putter can help or hurt my putting.
In this video I will be testing a 33, 34 & 35 inch putter's on the SAM PUTTING LAB with Head Coach at Torquay James Urquhart.
Join us as we investigate further.
Thanks for watching and please comment below.

A 33.5" putter might be the perfect sweet spot for Dan. My opinion is that every company should be offering putter lengths in at least 0.5" increments rather than only 1".With the adjustable weights available in numerous putters on the market, this wouldn't even require keeping dozens of different weights of putter heads in stock to build them either.

Very interesting analysis. I use a long putter due to old back injuries so I can stand up straighter. Been putting that way for about 20 years and am used to it now. Would be interesting to see Lester get fitted too. 👍

Great video Dan, I was tested on the SAM putting lab in Finland last year and it revealed several things that you did not mention, particularly about the type of putter that best suited my putting stroke and also the loft on the putter, I had the loft reduced by 1 Deg and saw an immediate better strike position on the putter face, the roll of the ball of the face was also much better. Keep up the great work😀😀😀

I bought a 35 inch putter very recently. I went for the Odyssey Stroke Lab V Line and tried both 34 and 35. As a 6 foot 3 guy the 35 just seemed to sit well in my hands for stroke. I wasn’t able to use SAM and did just go on feel. Although I definitely don’t hit it out the middle consistently I have noticed a positive difference with my putting. Great video Dan 👍

I had I putter fitting. I'm 6'3" tall with lower back problems from an early age, now 52. PGA tour superstore fitted me for a 31" putter. After only a few putts I could really feel my back hurting, so I stayed with a 35" and average 30 putts per round. Listen to your body, if your uncomfortable or in pain do not go with that length putter.

Long ago I played golf with a guy whose arms were very long, he used a 33 inch putter very well. I thought it was crazy to use that short of putter until I seen him scratch his knee while standing up straight, that is a slight embellishment but not by much. Putting is just another crazy part of this crazy game we all love. Good video guys, thanks.

I am an amateur weekend golfer, I have got 3 putters which are OG (34), XG(35) and Scotty 2.5 Newport special select(33) all blade putter. My height is 5’4” . At the start I found my XG a bit too long my elbow bend too much I couldn’t get over the ball properly so I cut my XG down to 33.5” after that I found much better but still my elbow bend a bit. Then I cut my OG down to 33” and change the grip to super stroke pistol number 2. My putting was much improve.. but..the middle insert seem to not good for me as my consistency not like golfers who play 3-4 days/week then I bought the scotty cameron newport 2.5 special select 33” milled no insert original standard pistol grip I found my putting much more better especially long putting … my arm hanging nicely my elbow feel relax more my eyes get over the ball.. shoulder and arms more tri-angle became one piece. So I would say if anyone’s posture is standard for putting.. the length of the putter it depends on how height and the length of you arm hanging down and how you stand on top of the ball while you putting. Funny thing is, I have always felt I am somewhere between 33 and 34 myself - and when I bought my most recent putter, there were two 34s to choose from, but one was very slightly shorter and that is the one I went with because performance wise, it was just so much easier to sink putts with.

Once you determine the length, it would be interesting to see how a blade would do versus a mallet. Also when James talks about the back issue, which I notice with me at times, how he would adjust length to help alleviate that. I've been considering a putter fitting in this off season so these putter fitting videos have been very informative. I had gone to a longer putter thinking it would help me judging longer putts. I am notorious with 3 putting. But then I notice more off center strikes.

I agree with some of the comments below. Would have been good to see a full fit to find the perfect length to show the whole process. I was fitted for 33" 8 years ago. Being fitted improved my putting dramatically as you end up in a much better/consistent hitting position. Also, any chance of Lester doing some carry bag reviews? Thinking of the Titleist Hybrid 5, something light to carry and cart. And maybe the Garmin S62..😊

Dan, I think most would agree that if you used the same tool for 10+ years you would become very proficient and comfortable with it. I would bet if you had used a 33” or 31” for the same period, this test would have proved it was the best for you in such a short test period..

I was told 10 years ago that the standard off the shelf putter length of 34” is too long for most people. I was fitted into 33” and have used it ever since and I’m 6’ 2”. The number of people I see putting with their bottom hand on the shaft and a lot of grip above their hands only goes to prove this theory is correct. I’ve tried 34” putters since and they just feel far too long. At the end of the day Dan it comes down to feel and comfort like you say. I do get a sight niggle in my lower back occasionally when practising putting for an extended period but as you only putt intermittently in a round I don’t find it a problem. 👍

Had my first putter fitting earlier this year. Had similar lower back issues with a 34", and 35" just did not feel right. In the end, was fitted with a putter length of 34.5", and went from a blade to a mini mallet. End results, took a little while to get use to the mallet, but during a recent practice session, made 17 five footers in a row. Including the session yesterday, being fitted has improved in reducing number of stokes per round as well as eliminating those dreaded 3 putts. For my money, I think being fitted for a putter is a better ROI (return on investment) than a driver. With all of that being said, perhaps you should look at a length somewhere between the 33 & 34. As always, great content ! :)

Couldn’t even tell you the length of any putter I’ve ever had. Went through a spell a few years back where I changed every few months, but it was all on feel. Two years ago got my very old Ping JB5 refurbished beautifully at Ping HQ, never looked back, or even thought of digging out my SC, or TM Ghost LE, or any of the others in the garage or loft. For me, all feel and between the ears. Interesting data though. Very educational

Good VDO, Dan. I always believe that the consistency is the key but now the accuracy. As you get closer to the ground, 32 or 31 inches, the better accuracy can be expected, I think. If I were you, will keep the 34" and choke down a little bit for every crucial putts.

Comfort is EVERYTHING. You have to love your putter - not dread it! The fitting advice is for beginners, but if you’ve been playing for years - then get a putter that fits your eye and excites you to use. I’d advise trying out the adjustable pings for yourself and on your own - not while being watched and pressured by a pro. YOU can then decide what length is best for YOU. Human nature makes us change our ‘normal’ to impress or please the teacher. Putting isn’t like the rest of golf - it’s a completely different game.

Very interesting, changing between style of putter as well as length would have been equally as interesting. My close friends son is an England junior and changing his spider x from 30 degree toe hang to face balanced made a huge difference on SAM, at his level of golf it's critical not so sure for myself being a 12 handicapper.

That putting competition hould cost me about £400 😭😭 but hopefully will be putting better afterwards. I think the win was meant to be. Have you heard of Precision golf in West Byfleet, Surrey? I watched a Scotty Cameron video that talked about this too. I’m surprised the your toe angle went up with the shorter putter. That lie angle is a key piece though. If you are toe up, the loft will change your aim left, toe Down, to the right. It’s only a little, but could be a big difference on long putts, or just be taking away a small percentage of putts that you actually hit well. I tried a couple of 35in putters yesterday and noticed a toe up/ left tendency right away, as long as my eyes were lined up over the ball. Sounds like you need a 33.5in putter. Thanks for the video.

Interesting. Many Years ago I went 1 inch longer (I'm 191cm tall) and realised I actually didn't putt as well as I did with the shorter putter. So back to standard I went. When trying putters of different lengths, you have to consider your putting history. It's no surprise that Dan's most consistent putting was with the 34" putter -- he's been using it forever and his body and his putting technique has adapted to that. But the data suggests that the 33" might be a better fit for his frame. He needs to spend some time to see if he can become more comfortable with it. Then he might regain his consistency, but with a better strike position on the face.

Should have fit you to a 33.5 inch putter. The 2 pct difference between the 34 and 33 would most likely disappear once you became accustomed to the 1/2 inch less in length because your numbers actually show the 33 had the best potential.

How about trying 33.5" or 33.75"? It seems like you might be in between 33" and 34". Also if you go shorter let your arms hang a little more so you don't have to bend over more. I've been experimenting with my 34" putter and if I choke down a 1/2 inch, my arms hang a bit more, it gets me on top of the ball a bit more and it seems that it's a bit easier to start putts on the correct line. At this point the small tweaks could help you find the best combination between the best strike with no back strain.

Really interesting video sir, I am a bit of a geek when it comes to stats and always wanted a putter fitting

I can’t see what difference it would make if you take the same posture all the time and allow your hands to rise and fall. I do this all the time especially when on sloping ground. Furthermore I vary the strike point on the face on purpose especially when confronted with a slippy downhill putt where I lighten my grip and hit off the toe. A putter is like any other club you don’t have to have your hands in the same place you can go up and down to finesse a wedge shot for example. By the same token the face of your wedge my be opened or hooded?

Just having the data on strike location gives you the knowledge you need to adjust set up with the 34. Maybe just literally set up with the ball looking further toward the toe, then go from there.

Set up the ball closer to the toe, that sounds like a bad idea to me. Why not just go with 33.75, or 33.5. Allow the strike point to centre naturally.

I just wonder how much shorter shafts like Lefty's putters are fitted with can make the owner feel comfortable.

With the smaller one could it not just be that the back issue is more because of it feeling different rather than actually being a problem. So would you get used to it in time? It may then give better figures perhaps?

Back problems aside. Surely the smaller the putter i.e. a 33 over a 34 would also provide greater accuracy as you are closer to the ball and have greater control, right?

What about adjusting the lie on the 34”?

I’m wondering if a different head on your putter would improve your striking?

Getting fitted for a Putter that is optimised for you is probably more important than any other club in your Bag IMO!

So, is it best to be very consistent with a 'not ideal' strike position, or slightly less consistent with an ideal strike location? 🤔 Just a thought, why not try the 33" putter with a slightly wider stance so you keep your spine in its current posture and you give yourself a potentially 'firmer' base as a consequence...🙂👍🙏⛳️🏌️🍻
