I got told that I couldn’t have ADHD because I liked to read as a child. Fortunately, my current psychologist was horrified to hear about that doctor, and is much better.
That was a great listen thank you. I was diagnosed this year in June with Combined Adhd at the age of 44, who knew! Apparently everyone except me. I am now studying Counselling skills level 2 at college and intend to carry on to level 4. Strangely they are not interested in discussing or acknowledging neurodiversity in the course. There are 3 of us with adhd, there are no reasonable adjustments offered at all. But I was very surprised that there is no mention of it let alone training. ADHD and ASD are literally ghosted in counselling. I would love to get in touch with Sarah, she is doing an amazing job.

I realised my son had ADHD during lock down because he also has tourrettes and I was researching tourrettes and noticed he had ADHD symptoms aswell. People with Tourrettes have other issues too thays how i stumbled across it. But because the school he goes to doesn't think he does, I was refused an assessment. I noticed my daughter had ADHD symptoms before she hit 2, when she started talking she hasn't stopped since, and her speech is far more advanced than any other kid I have ever met. Since researching I know, they got it from me, but I can't get a diagnosis because the doctor said everyone has ADHD symptoms. I'm just stuck in a hard place trying to do it on my own because I can't afford to go privately 😢

I think if I had been diagnosed when I was young in the 80's, I would have been very bad for me. I think we need more education for the neuroboring (neurotypical) people who are blessed to have ADHD people in their lives. The goal should be to give people tools that they need to succeed (not make them try to be something they are not)

To me this sounds as if every ADHDer were a criminal and, even worse, that neurotypic people hardly ever committed a crime. I find that discriminating even dangerous, especially when it comes to sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is about power and humiliation and sadly differently labeled commonly accepted. Plus needing to help people to boost one's own adrenaline and advocating medication rather unreflected is a concept I don't support. ADHDer, non criminal
Hey man, love your content! Just wanted to say sharing a stat like 85% of criminals have ADHD is not helpful. It's a weird thing to interpret cause it makes it sound like most people with ADHD are criminals. What I read from a stat like that (whatever the source is ) is that ADHD is even more prevalent then we thought. A better stat would be the percent of ADHD people who become a criminal which would probably be much lower and paint the ADHD community in a better light.
How's that going to help all the people with adhd who may not be in prison or commiting crime if they had been diagnosed or given the understanding and help they needed much earlier .what about their stigma?
We need ADHD management in prison programs, though. It might help a lot of people avoid recidivism. It might also lead to increased support for early intervention because people both don't like crime and have more empathy for how it's not just people being bad. They're in need of support, eg meditation positively impacts troubled teens in high school.
It's not to say ADHDer are criminals. There is research study done finding the combination of Psychopath and ADHD causing serious behavioral problems. The impulse and excitement seeking part of ADHD, combined with callous and psychopath, goes untreated, can be really problematic.
I am almost certain I am dyscalculaic as my ADHD come up during having to resist Maths GCSE age 47 for a work based apprenticeship in management. It’s been hell. Shame it’s £600 to get diagnosed.
Every school should reach out to former students with ADHD who excelled at each of the subjects and have them be the tutor for the kids with ADHD in after school sessions in that subject. Those are probably the best at making that subject interesting. Maybe ask the ADHD students to teach the class every once in a while…🤔 The kids who need to move should be allowed to freely leave the classroom, and be allowed fidget-toys as long as they don’t distract the other students.

Does anyone know what the link between IBS and ADHD is that made the doctor suggest she look up ADHD? I've never heard of a connection before but it seems he has and I'm intrigued
I've been told that because I have GCSEs it means that I cant have ADHD??? It's infuriating, but what I find the most upsetting is the judgement...like I'm 'jumping on a band-wagon'....for me it makes me less inclined to ask for help 😔
Lol, I have ADHD and I earned my bachelors degree at age 20. There's plenty smart people with ADHD who can compensate enough to get through the school system.
Remind them of what happened with left-handed people. Once they stopped trying to beat lefthandedness out of kids, a lot more left-handed people showed up. That's not a bandwagon, that's statistic stabilisation.
I get really triggered when people call autism ASD.... its not a disorder its bad enough the name ADHD but that's the only option we have you have the option with autism so dont use ASD
Because ADHD isn't a disease? It can't be cured, and I wouldn't want it cured because it would change who I am permanently and I happen to like who I am. The meds help manage the day-to-day and relieve a lot of the symptoms that drag down quality of life. Saying that meds aren't a cure is suggesting that they make less of a difference than they actually do. Painkillers aren't a cure for chronic pain either, but they can and do make the difference between a suffering mess and a (semi) functional person.
