I literally was just talking about how I could use a decent crash course refresher on eq cutting and this helped immensely, rock on mdude!

Awesome! Heard Rob talk about this in his full live mix stream and it's something I've been wanting to work on more. This goes a lot more in-depth and is more helpful. Thanks for this tutorial!

One thing you didn't mention is fundamental frequencies and making sure you aren't cutting those in the process- is that something that you think is not a danger in this approach?

all this work to treat rooms, what about recording in a pasture open grassland in the middle of nowhere? that's it I'm moving my recording studio to the cow pasture.

It's way cheaper to treat a room, and it's way more convenient. Or were you thinking of standing on a pole too?

I love the trick by adding a shelf after the cuts in the overheads. I’ve never tried that. That’s awesome.

Thanks a lot Dylan! Very illustrative video. I have a question: Would it be a good idea to make just one wider cut when there are two resonances close to each other? Thanks also for the terms sheet. It is very helpful. Specially for me that english is not my mother language and I always get confused by all those terms.

Very interesting, but I'd rather use a dynamic eq, because if your instrument (e.g. the guitar) moves to a higher pitch maybe you don't want to cut those frequencies so hard.

Hi... the download does not contain the actual EQ sheet that you mention, just the anatomy of the EQ??
@JosephineDeSmet

Can you do a life saving eq video that doesn't exist yet. It's a video on all the ugly frequencies that exist like mud, harshness, boxy, dull, etc and then a before and after: what they sound like vs what they should sound like. There are a lot of videos on just mud but the other frequencies are always neglected a bit and I really need examples of what that sounds like to know what I'm looking for.

Did you tried this with an dynamic eq? Maybe that's more transparant. Good video!
@djabthrash

If the frequency problem is CONSTANT, then dynamic eq is not the answer.
@djabthrash

@@mttlsa686 "the dynamic eq is dynamic for the volume not for the frequency" Can you explain further please ? Still confused with dynamic EQ vs multiband EQ vs EQ at times :(
@djabthrash
@djabthrash 3 года назад
@@mttlsa686 Your explanation and English were very good thanks ! However, i still stand by my first statement : if the problem if PERMANENT throughout the mix, then a multiband comp or dynamic EQ is not the right tool, because those are meant to act when needed at SPECIFIC TIMES.
@djabthrash
@djabthrash 3 года назад
@@mttlsa686 "in this way you kill the annoying frequencies only when they go over a certain threshold" "only when" says that it's not a PERMANENT issue. I hope you see what i meant in the first place. Not saying the DynEQ is not the proper tool in your case tho' of course.
@djabthrash
@djabthrash 3 года назад
@@mttlsa686 I agree with everything you said, but you described a situation that's not permanent : on certain chords/notes (i.e not all the time) you will have problems, hence the use of dynEQ or MBcomp. On the other hand, if the problem is permanent, then it's better to reach for a regular EQ.
@trexxperiaz8654

You’ve created artificial problem, and the you cut out that artificial problem. If you have problems in sound that you hear - just get rid of it. You can find “resonance” by sweeping eq in every sample.

Your turotial is the equivelant of giving up on natural instruments all together, instead of actualy using a proper recording room. Exactly like your background showing an actual recording space, which, funnily enough, is filled with actual acoustic treatment...

Is it just me, or on most of the parts you killed the life on the instruments - which you mentioned you did not want to do? Thump and some room is natural, in some ways... I mean, I do not know. It is like you try so hard to record everything "sterile" and without any reverb of sound of the room, so that later in post you can add a room reverb? I get it why people do that - to have CONTROL, but is it just me who thinks that people are overly-stressed nowadays with sounds that are not really a problem? I saw singers record in a big living room, with carpets on the floor and a microphone screen behind it and just the let the vocalist feel like home and do her thing, while capturing a bit of LIFE and NATURAL room sound onto the recording. Bands used to record their drums in an actual chamber, sometimes, to add that track to the recording and have a REAL chamber reverb - where do you think that name comes from? I mean, I respect the craft and everyone can do it the way he/she wants. BUT DO NOT FORGET that some things are not really an issue, as long as you know what you are doing. There are no CREATIVE rules in mixing - just some technical rules, sure (clipping in a digital app etc.). But, other than that, FEEL FREE...
@RaKanMusik
@RaKanMusik 2 года назад
Because those a rooms are acoustically tuned to capture the best sounds. The resonances are treated even further up stream is the only difference in what you're saying. Since you can't always have a perfect room you have to know how to do this. Especially as a mix engineer who may get source tracked in sub-optimal acoustic spaces.
