How to spray EVH stripes with spray paint

This is how I sprayed out this EVH Gear Wolfgang with Frankenstrat EVH stripes like Eddie Van Halen. I used Rustoleum Lacquer and Duplicolor Auto paint. Here are the links to the paint I used:

I did the black n white 2 weeks after VH1 in 1978...only the album cover to go on.....but NO CLEAR COAT.... Eddie never did

The franky was original striped with masking tape for the black and white and gaffer tape and console tape when the red was applied. There was a white coat applied under the red lacquer then was wet sanded. Eddie never clear coated it.

Man, I'd be so scared to take my guitar apart like that. I know I'd mess something up trying to put it back together. Mad respect for anyone that can do this kind of thing, I'm probably just going to pay someone who knows what they are doing to paint Eddie stripes on my black axe.

When I checked into it he said about $1,200. That was to find a Wolfgang and then paint it. If you had a Guitar to ship to him maybe 1/2 that? He's a pretty laid back and reasonable guy just shoot him an email. @@starwalkrrbricks

Eddies probably wasn’t painted super flat. The Frankenstein guitar is brutally beautiful close up. Amazing on not giving a shit can look so awesome. Just tear it up and it will look even better man! Nice job!

To make it flat and level out the stripes you gotta lightly scruff it with 0000 steel wool, and run an x-acto blade on the stripes borders, it flushes out everything real smooth. Good job man

I definitely wouldn't do that, to get it 100% flat, a better clear coat product must be used, a thick polyurethane or polyester.Then level sanding it flat.

That turned out beautifully. Great work! For those in the comments unsure whether to try this on anything, not only a guitar. The beauty of paint is often times you can always go back and fix it if you made a mistake or are not happen with it. Cheers!

Great build, I can confirm even the EVH striped series guitars that are striped in the factory aren't completely flat. The original guitars would have been uneven anyway so it's more authentic!

Damn, I’m blown away. Just stumbled across your video and can’t believe this. I just bought a EVH Wolfgang Standard purple burst about two months ago and I love the guitar, it is a never played 2017 model. But the color is not what I was expecting and I’m disappointed, it is more violet, I would say to myself wish I could have this guitar repainted into the Frankenstrat, you proved that it is possible and man I wish you could do it for me, I have no idea about how to go about finding somebody to do it. Wish we we’re friends or neighbors. Guitar looks great, good job!!!!

I never got to see the original but I would be willing to bet Eddie didn't get his all slick and nice. He was a musical genius but not the words greatest craftsman. The Ibanez Destroyer mod was not his greatest effort. That is just fine with me.

Hey that is beautiful! Question: did you just use masking tape for blocking off the lines? Also, what if you started with a glossy guitar where you want to incorporate the original color? Just mask it off? Do you have to send areas that are getting paint?

Mike Fox, yeah, you’d have to sand where you want the new paint lines, just mask off every part you want to stay The same color

That was awesome,,,but the taping is what I need to know,,its done fast so I cant grab it,,do you leave these stripes taped up ?? For final red coat ?? Any sanding in between coats,,,videos I've seen on here looks like the red coat is sprayed n the guitar has no tape,,black n white tape pulled off then red coat ?? I own 1 now but I'd like to redo it,,,any input

Look up paint stages on Google, I have just done the first stage, seems a lot of work at first, but you get through it, you need a standard size masking tape and a thin one then it's fairly straight forward. Get a pic of the black and white without the really small pinstripes and start with the top corner and work your way around

Took about an hour once I got going and I did it with a white guitar so had to tape up the whole guitar and cut it all out where the black is going to be

What I wanted to know is how long did you wait before applying clear, I used rustoleum clear gloss on the back of the guitar after 3 days & it reacted

If you are using the smaller cans by Duplicolor then I would plan on 2 cans of each color.

Humidity is the killer not the heat. I'm pretty sure EVH wasn't concerned with finish so much as throwing together a functional guitar.. h Eddie is a tone chaser. It's no that you can't get a good finish, it's the durability...

Oh the heat will get you too. If it’s too hot the paint starts cracking and drying too quickly. You’re right about humidity, it’ll trap inside the paint! It’s crazy.

any tips for removing tape residue? Ronsonol/zippo fluid didnt quite do it and the paint i used on my first project contained acetone so using acetone was kinda out of the question. Mineral spirits or 97% alcohol or what do you use, as a ref to my next project

I'm sure it has probably been mentioned before, but what are some tips to getting really clean paint lines? I always seem to get just a little bleed after I remove the tape no matter what. I've heard the razor blade trick and steel wool... anything else?

Two big tips are to clean the body really well before taping. And to use the best quality tape you can find, green painters tape is the best in my experience. Even yellow automotive tape bleeds something. And to get it perfect is pretty hard, so it usually requires some cleanup with a fresh blade.

So when your doing the first coat you mask off the the guitar and pain the black strips? then you mask the black stripes you painted and do the white. Now once that done do you still leave the black ones masked and mask the white ones to pain the rest red?

No, you remove the tape at each step. So paint it all black. Then you add tape and spray the white. Then you remove the tape and you have a black and white striped Frankenstrat. Then you add new tape lines and do the red.

Soo many people crying about the tape? Put it in line with the picture then wrap it round the guitar, if it doesn't look right peel it off and start over... It will only fold over the guitar in a certain way so it stays flat.. Just dive in and try it... How much harm could it do

Tape size in metric please?

There’s a few sizes. Dont know the metric size off hand but 1”, 0.75”, 3/8”, 3/16” 1/4” 3/32” - my recommendations is to cut some tape down to size with a straight edge. Watch my trash to thrash videos on EVH and you’ll see what im saying.
