@@esotericsean Liquid electrical tape is easier to work with, though liquid masking gets the job done with patience and a steady hand. I wouldn't recommend liquid masking for anything but filling the button cavities you don't want painted. Liquid electrical tape can be found all over Amazon.

Devo Interesting, I’ll give liquid electrical tape a try. I’ve just finished shooting a video using liquid frisket/mask and had some good success with it, but now I have to try the other stuff and compare. :)

Sounds cool! I actually don't usually wait too long. I guess I'm maybe a bit more careful with it the first day, but whenever I've painted a shell I usually let it dry for like an hour and then I have it on my desk on a protective surface like a cloth. Should be fully cured after 24 hours or so, though.

maitaliK Yep, I use the same paint for the outside, it holds up really well, but it’s still paint. Some original Game Boys were painted by Nintendo (like the silver pocket) and even those rubbed off after years of use. High quality paint that’s bonded properly will last a long time, but with heavy use it will still rub off. You probably won’t see it on your hands though.

Oh boy yupppp that silver pocket. I got one of those from back in the day and the paint is worn.

The varnish cures really nicely. Definitely not tacky. But you may want to look into Molotov spray paint. Even higher quality than Montana Gold.

It definitely doesn't need any sanding. Sanding would probably make it even stronger, but it's very strong without sanding.

Sean's method for painting the inside like that with those good paints seems solid to me! It's a great idea. I actually wouldn't sand or scotchbrite before hand because I don't think it would help the look of the finish in this case. However, if you were painting the outside of a plastic project, then that's a different ball game. I would def scotchbrite, clean really well with soap and water after (otherwise your finish will run if it's not 100% clean, a toothbrush can be helpful here). Wipe down with rubbing alcohol as well to make sure it is 100% clean. Then I would use an adhesion promoter (Plastic Primer), then primer, paint, let dry, wetsand to 600 or 800 grit, clean, and then for the clear coat I would advice using a 2K clear coat (not 2X). You can find it on Amazon. This stuff is pretty toxic though, so you gotta have a good respirator and ventilation but it's what makes all the difference when you need a durable finish. Then use Megiars 3 part polishing process to get that mirror finish. There's a lot of good videos on YT, but that's the basics for getting a great spray can paint job done.

If it was dirty, I might use some alcohol, but never acetone as that would eat through the plastic surface.

Lego Jawa If you’re painting the outside of a shell, it’s much easier. You don’t really need to mask anything. Just remove everything and paint.

Yeah! I actually did that to one of my clear shells as a kid haha. It looks pretty similar to how the aftermarket black shell looks.

Little Pidgey if you spray too thick it will, but if you keep it thin it’s not a problem. And if they do happen to clog you can use a needle or toothpick to open them up again. :)

I really really wouldn't recommend painting it without taking it apart, but I suppose taping it could work.

@@MerrickCamo520 Which version of Game Boy is it? They’re pretty simple, not much to break if you take them apart. I would get either blue painter’s tape or if you want something better try Frog tape. :)
