I loved your video and you are the first person who had mentioned adding water to thin the water based Varathane. I've sprayed the oil based Varathane with fantastic results for 40 plus years but I'm really interested in switching over to water base and learning how to handle it.

I like all your tips,but they didn’t work very well for me ,but finally I found the solution for painting my black dressers and tables😂.I found that spraying the poly in different directions while is wet it won’t end up with any fogginess or streak lines.This is how the house painters do sometimes , so I decide to tried and I’m loving this method 😊.

Thanks for the vid. I'm an airbrush artist and still learn a lot as I go. May I ask what needle size is in your gun? I'm not sure how to compare the wagner style home painting guns with the automotive style air guns we are using. I'd be really interested in seeing how you set up your area to paint too. I'm about to do some large cabinets and don't have a big area.

I've got fuji spray system as well. Whenever I spray poly It always leaves air bubbles on the final coat and need to knock them down with 2000 grit sandpaper to make it smooth. I sand the wood down to 180 or 220 grit then between coats with 320 grit. I tried many different gun settings from spraying thick and thinner coats with no better results, any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

In terms of thinning, if I am using a 1.5mm spray tip and the manufacturer recommends 1.3mm, should I thin more or less? This is for General Finishes water based poly top coat going on to cabinet doors and they recommend a wet film thickness of 3-5 mil. I obviously would like the coat to be as smooth as possible, so I am wondering if I should thin at the top end of their recommended range (15% by volume of water or their dry time extender additive), or if the larger spray tip (33% larger opening than they recommend) means I should thin less because there will be more material coming out of the gun than recommended.

Hey. I'm about to spray the same Varathane water based poly on some cabinets. Do you/can you let the unused poly sit in the cup between coats (I've brushed this poly before and it dries pretty quickly, ~1-2 hours)? I guess it won't dry out but you oughta swirl it around to mix the flattener and poly before resuming to spray. How do you clean out the poly from the gun after the final coat? Do you decant the excess, wipe the inside of the cup with a rag, run soapy water through the spray a few times? And what of disposal of the soapy water/poly solution? Can it be poured down the drain? Or do you leave it outside to dry out and tossed with garbage?

Great video! What grit sandpaper are you using between coats? Do you sand with a spray can finish also?
@ARayofSunlight
@ARayofSunlight 2 года назад
Between coats of poly I use a 400 grit. I don’t sand between spray can coats, since the recoat time is so quick.

what do you do if you spray too much and it's still wet, can you spread it? or do you have to fix it afterwards?
@ARayofSunlight
@ARayofSunlight 5 месяцев назад
If I spray too much and I start to see drips, I brush it while it is still wet and remove the excess with the paint brush. Then I let it dry and lightly sand it smooth with 220 or 400 grit sandpaper to remove any brush marks. Otherwise if you let it dry with drips, you will have to sand through thick product and it will ruin the finish.

hi, i have two doubts 1. did you mixed color paint and polycrylic and then spray that table? if yes, what kind of pain you used? 2 it´s possible to paint with color acrylic spray paint and then apply a top layer of polycrylic to get a scratch resistant protection? thanks a lot!!!

In this makeover ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-s1leflM541g.html, I applied it by hand. I don’t do it often because spraying is so easy, but I did do it here so anyone who has to brush it on can see. Goodluck!

I just sprayed water based poly varathane on a piece. I mixed it, strained it and then thinned. I think i thinned too much, i sprayed it on and it looked fine, then all poured down and puddled off 😢. Would you say i thinned too much [16 oz of poly and 2 oz of water]
@ARayofSunlight

I bet your sprayer’s fluid settings were too high, so you sprayed too much on the surface. I’ve done that MANY times on accident before.

Great video! Are those last blue furniture pieces all finished with the “satin” finish poly? Debating if satin or semi-gloss is better for finishing dark painted pieces of furniture!

You know, I honestly can’t remember if it was satin or semi gloss. 😬 but I have a video on that makeover (the FLEXiO 3000 video). In the description of the video there should be a link to my website with details on that makeover if you don’t have time to watch the full video.

Usually yes, sometimes I wait until after the 1st coat of poly if I don’t want the paint to get distressed.

Does this water based polyurethane cause yellowing when used on top of white paint? I'm working on a table and I have used a shellac based primer to avoid the wood from bleeding. I've done two coats of white paint but I'm still not sure what to protect it with that won't yellow but still be durable.
@ARayofSunlight
@ARayofSunlight 2 года назад
All topcoat has a tendency to yellow overtime at least a little bit. Ive never had problems with this stuff though. I actually have a white piece that I painted in 2017 with this as the topcoat. I don’t see any yellowing on it.

Definitely WOULD NOT water this down using a Wagner Spray. I followed this advice and set my Wagner to the lowest setting and it all ran. I had to quickly wipe it all off before it ruined my meticulous wet sanding and three coats of paint. Just my experience, but if using a Wagner spray, would strongly caution against thinning.
@ARayofSunlight
@ARayofSunlight 2 года назад
Oh no! I’m sorry to hear that! Are you sure you had the settings all the way down? That the wheel behind the trigger was twisted out as far as you could get it, to the point that it was almost to fall off? I only say this because I’ve made that mistake... and thought I had it all the way down when I really had the settings all the way up. 🤦🏻‍♀️ (my other sprayer is the opposite, and I wasn’t paying attention. I only realized my mistake when I tried to get it set to spray absolutely nothing, and it still sprayed a bunch.) Nothing should come out of your sprayer if you have that knob unscrewed most of the way. Also, if the settings are in fact correct, then you’ve thinned out your poly too much. I hope that helps!
