You can try GSE (grapefruit seed extract) instead of apple cider vinegar (8 drops). You can also sprout less at a time and give them a good shake in the jar to get a lot of the water out before setting them down to sprout! It can take a lot of practice to get it right with is okay! You could also just start with soaking - The Parrot Teacher has a great video on soaking seeds!

You can sprout in the fridge but it can take longer! You could also use grapefruit seed extract for avoiding bacteria and mould growth! The key is to portion their food so they aren’t leaving lots so it doesn’t sit out!

Hi Sophie! So I’ve done my first trial of growing broccoli sprouts and I got some unexpected results. They are growing white fuzzy hairs. I looked into it and they’re cilia hairs, not mold. Turns out they were too dehydrated. I was wondering (for future reference) are sprouts with cilia hairs safe for eating if I’m able to get rid of them, or are they a failed batch?
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 2 года назад
Hey! Cruciferous spirits like broccoli and kale naturally have cilia hairs that come out looking for water when they are slightly dry. Once you rinse them again, the hairs retract! They’re perfectly safe to eat and feed when sprouted correctly 😊

Smells like a fresh salad.... lol I have no idea what that smells like xD I am finally going to give this a go. I found some canning jars I had extra of in a smaller size. So I can try sprouting smaller amounts. 3 different ones to sprout 3 different organic seeds I got off amazon. Seeing I have no idea how long each will take, I will write that down. Defiantly going to give it a few trys. Make sure they come out perfect. More worried about mold more so than anything. Didn't know about the apple cider vinegar thing. I might add that if I do smell molding issues of any kind. Oddly enough my birds have been sprouting their own seeds. 1 of the budgies seems to fling a random seed from the foraging area into their water fountain. Which starts to grow lol. I got everything separate in that blend. Was just more efficient cost wise for me. I am actually going to try and grow some of these plants next spring. Why not right? I live on a farm. Might as well use some of it for the birds. Had an herb garden, but it got a bit overgrown by the side growth. Everything grown here is organic in organic soil mind you. Just seems a waste to not grow your own plants, and harvest the seeds. Do you happen to know which herbs are better than others to give to your parrots? Have you ever made a herb box for the birds? I didn't even think about sprouting quinoa or chick peas! Oh yea, with my canning jars, I just used cheese cloth :) DIY where ya can, when you have the stuff on hand right?! :D Is it best to soak them for the first time during the day, or at night? for the 8-12 hours? After the soak you just leave them alone for a few days then, don't move the jar at all?
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 4 года назад
Haha, I think even if veggies aren;t your thing, you'll know when they're off as they won;t smell pleasant, and sometimes have a vinegary smell! If you have good seeds and follow the instructions, you shoudln;t have any issues with mould! But if in doubt, throw it out! Lol the boys sometimes like throwing pumpkin seeds in their water to soak too haha! Yes I also buy things separate sometimes too, but for owners who might not be as keen on the idea, the mixed blend makes it so easy so hopefully more people will give it a try. Oh absolutely grow them! If we could, we would! I'd love a little veggies and flower patch to grow things for them. Our flock's favourite herbs are rosemary and mint, but here's a list of all the safe ones, though all should be in moderation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CgZAFpzr2rk.html Yes if you have spare jars and cheese cloth then go for it! I usually do the soak overnight as I find that the sprouts are ready when I want them this way. Usually 8-12 hours but it depends on the seed - the website above has soaking times for different sprouts (e.g. quinoa is 6 hours). Once they've soaked, rinse them as I do in the video, then leave them at the 45 degree angle so any excess water can flow out and air can get in, then rinse in the morning and in the evening and put back to the 45 degree angle!
