Hey Parrot Parents!
Today's video is on a current very controversial topic : Pellets!
I interview a leading parrot nutrition consultant called Dr Jason Crean about pellets and the role they play in a parrot's diet.
Please be aware as this is a controversial topic, the goal of this video is to provide information and educate! It's not about "calling people out" or "gatekeeping" or attacking anyone. It is to provide the current science based information regarding pellets.
As the interview was so full of information I decided to provide it totally unedited so you guys didn't miss anything! Forgive any errors due to this!
I'd like to thank Jason for taking the time to do this interview and I hope you all find it useful!

I am about to start my 5 month old on pellets. I have converted him to fresh chop for breakfast every morning and in my opinion his chop is the highlight of his health. Everything and more that a pellet can provide plus additional hydration! Although, I do feel like pellets provide other things you can’t get from raw fresh veggies and fruit. I also feel like the amount of pellets you feed should be very small. That’s my opinion, which I think is all a parrots diet really is. Opinions. My instinct tells me to feed 60% vegetables/chop …20% pellets / seeds …20% fruit and only feed pellets on top of the chop as a “spice” or flavour enhancer.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Год назад
Honestly your approach sounds sensible. We don’t believe in feeding pellets at all, but I also feel that if they are part of a balanced diet then there’s no harm in doing so, especially if they are a small proportion! I have other videos on similar topics if you’d like to explore it further!

@@TheParrotTeacher amen! I put fruit so low because of the higher sugar content but fruit is probably still healthier than pellets and seeds. So even 15 seeds and 25 fruit 😂 pellets might need their own lower score too being it’s a seasoning not a source of nutrients lol Thanks for your reply!
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Год назад
@@goldmemberr fruit certainly is! It’s worth using lower sugar fruits like blueberries for example! Also often the issue with fruit tends to be portion size rather than having it in the diet. For example a grape is small to us but the size of a conures head!

Thank you for this video. I did loads of research and it was always pellets making the majority of food for parrots. Having had studied agriculture this never sat with me too well. When vet told me to convert my budgies onto pellets I was not overly keen on the idea. I started to research whole foods and progressed so much since last summer. I am just hoping that the new and improved diet will help with one of my budgies specifically. She has a huge lipoma most likely due to previous neglect that I was able to rescue her from. However she is so difficult to convert onto healthy foods. So any ideas are always good to hear. I actually watched few interviews with Dr Crean and they all have slightly different focus so I am building up a good overview on this.

Chako my African Grey is my 32 years old rehab, he was my father’s, starting to develop cataracts, if you know cataracts from humans you might know it is a common aging thing - possibly had connection to poor nutrition as well, but my bird is 32- should not be an elderly bird yet. That was my pellets goodbye call, never liked them, fed them so my vets are happy, I am not happy, my bird is not thriving, ba-bye pellets. I decided to study as much avian nutrition as I can with what books and internet can offer, it is brain stretching and complex and I think it might as well effects and improves my own diet as well, my body needs it too.

Hey Guy, Yeah some pellets definitely do not provide a complete diet and can lead to nutritional deficiencies that cause issues. I like you am doing the same. I don’t think it’s true though to say a parrot will just eat a food if you give it to them. Some parrots who are in very poor condition prior will starve if not given foods they recognize. There is a smooth way to do diet conversion but I think it’s a dangerous statement to tell owners that “tough love” is the way to go or that if they put it there they won’t starve to death. Also, one of the things about vitamin A is that vitamin A in purified form usually vitamin A palmitate is not very stable and so if not stored properly and exposed to oxygen and light it is among the first to degrade so that is going to be a massive contributor to the vitamin A content of the pellet. It’s not that the vitamin A supplement doesn’t work but that the majority of people don’t know how to properly store a pellet and they’re also buying pellets that are poorly packaged to start with.
@BirdNerdSophie
@BirdNerdSophie 2 года назад
@@TheBudgieAcademy yes there are definitely plenty of ways to convert birds to a healthier diet, but we often see people say that they have tried veggies a couple of times and the bird didn’t eat them so they gave up! Also, if the vitamin A content of a pellet is so unstable and needs certain conditions in order to be effective, would it not be easier to focus on working on a bird eating natural sources of vitamin A!
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 года назад
@@TheBudgieAcademy Sorry if this is late to the debate! Regarding starving, definitely not! There will always be individual circumstances to consider. I'm not sure Jason was trying to imply that you should just leave a bird to starve by offering nothing but veg randomly. Diet conversion takes time especially if there is a difficult history. That is definitely interesting information.The problem with pellets in general though is they are made to be mass marketed and cheap. So I doubt many manufacturers would take the time to package properly which is a shame.

@@TheParrotTeacher To be quite honest, all of our foods are poisen to them. Even if they are organic, they still use pesticides and dyes in which are still hameful to them. No, not all GMOS are bad either. Depends what they due to the food genetics. All that I'm saying is that we try our best. I had to study this in my social work classes when I was getting my bachlors degree. There is no such thing as healthy foods, really.

@@TheParrotTeacher I split the food into a tipper foraging “toy” which is up high…this has helped but only one can eat at a time. This causes a bit of argy bargy. Then the rest is in a stainless steel bowl near the bottom of the cage. When there’s a bit of squabbling over the food they sit with the bum over it to fend the other off. It gets washed everyday. I’ve been over to Sophie’s channel for the great sprouting video and have some quinoa on the go now. My older cockatiel does eat some veg and sprouts. I keep nutriberries (pellets) in her cage all day and night, so it sounds like that may be one of the main issues. Can I leave out chopped veggies and sprouts during a normal 8 hour shift instead of pellets? I don’t want to make her sick if that will spoil. Thank you again for a great video ☺️
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 года назад
Hey Geneva, They can be really fussy with their veg/sprouts. It usually takes persistence, offering the same food in different ways and I found herbs to be helpful! Peas can also be a good shout. That could very well be. We give ours nutriberries, but only occasionally as they are full of sugar and just tons of seed. You can leave veg/sprouts out during the day for sure. What we do is provide the fresh mean in the morning then provide a dry mix of different things in the evening. This usually has a mix of seeds, some tops pellets, dried flowers, spices, freeze dried veg and other "topper" ingredients I add!

Dr. Crean, it is not that easy to sprout. I must do something wrong. I bought sprouting jars and the beginning Sprouts grew mold. Could it have been too warm? I live in Arizona with A/C of course. Sophie made it look so easy as well. My bird is picky. Doesn't like much chop.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 10 месяцев назад
Sadly Jason won’t be able to respond on here as it’s not his channel! But you can help prevent mould by using something like grape seed extract or apple cider vinegar! Sophie’s videos should have proportions for both! Also if sprouting is proving to be too annoying you could try soaking instead as it involves much less effort and still improves the nutrition profile of seeds. Buckwheat for example only needs to be soaked for 10-15 minutes!

I am losing my mind and energy in trying to feed my bird vegetables. Do you think a company for my single female cocateil bring about any change in her eating habits? If so, then shall I get male for her company? She still picks out a few of her favorite sprouted grains and leaves the veggies and even the tiny tail of the sprout. I have little success when I place spinach or coriander leaves in her aviary.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 2 года назад
Hey ADD, Have you watched mine/Sophie's videos on getting parrots to eat veggies? They may have some useful tips. Sadly swapping to a better diet can take ages and lots of effort. But it is achieable! Company will likely make her feel more comfortable, provided you take time/bond them properly first. But I doubt it'll impact much on her dietary choices. If you did get a male you'd have to manage hormones carefully to avoid any potential mating/hormonal behaviour. It's still good that she's eating some of the sprouts though. And that she will try some green things! It shows you're moving in the right direction.
@angsfeatheredfriends
@angsfeatheredfriends 2 года назад
You want to end up with eggs, possible egg binding (death for a lot of females) and chicks you may have to raise yourself (not all birds make good parents), and young birds you may not be able to rehome, then yes, get a male cockatiel. Alternatively, you could get another female. Same sex pairs work just fine. Not all birds will bond with each other. I had the bright idea of getting my older cockatiel a friend. He hates her to no end. I don't see them breeding ever, they will room mate in the cage without aggression at least. I was able to convert my male cockatiel to veggies, all on his own, without any issues. I just got her for extra companionship, and both are rescues. She needed a new home BAD. Have you tried the veggies in different shapes and sizes? I had to start my picky eaters out on baby food! Then I slowly worked chunks of veggies into the mix. Seeds is a nice cheat. I added those to the puree mix. Guess what, they went in for seeds, and got a mouth full of veggies every time. Man does that stuff make a mess though. WORTH IT! Also variety is the key. 1 giant broccoli is boring, and doesn't offer much in nutrition. A chop mix on the other hand, gives them the ability to pick around and forage, like they should be doing. Adding herbs, spices, sprouts, seeds, can also help a ton. Have you tried eating with her? A plain salad for you, eat with her. Cockatiels who are bonded to their owners will always want to eat what they are eating, that is how flock mentality works.
@curlycurlbirdygirl
@curlycurlbirdygirl 2 года назад
@@angsfeatheredfriends You seem to know your birds and stuff around and about them but I strongly disagree with the first paragraph. A pair of cockatiels of the opposite sex doesn't mate all the time nor lay eggs all the time nor the eggs hatch all the time. It's all about hormone management where the diet and the environment and even the human interaction with the birds play a huge role. HOWEVER if one is to take two birds of the opposite sex, one should educate themselves about what that can entail, which is some of the things you listed, and learn the ways how to deal with them, but these things most often don't happen at all. Constant learning about birds behaviour and what it takes for their wellbeing is the key. I may even add that just regarding cockatiels one should always have at least two, since they are one of the most flock birds out there. And yes, to be on the safe side, they may be of the same sex.
@angsfeatheredfriends
@angsfeatheredfriends 2 года назад
@@curlycurlbirdygirl Suppose I could of broken it down into insane detail, but I chose not to, what I said was just basic info, and yes, your birds can end up breeding, even with best intentions. Most people don't monitor their birds behavior 24/7. Most people don't bother researching things to make their birds non hormonal. Not everyone feeds them the best diets. Not everyone gives them proper sleep schedules. Not everyone provides a proper hormonal free environment. Most sickos pet their birds in seriously inappropriate areas of their bodies (or try to). Best to just be safe and go with the same gender. Considering not everyone even knows how to tell their birds are being hormonal, most people just think they are being cute, so hey lets put it on ticktok! Sweet, I got a bajillion views from that, I am gunna keep doing it! There are to many un wanted parrots in rescues already, the world doesn't need more un planned breeding happening. Main thing I knew, before I got my birds, pellets with food dyes, added salt, and added sugar are the worst pellets you can possibly get. Over time I learn more and more about pellets. Because more and more info is becoming available! Pellets would be like a human just eating cereal for the rest of your life, 1 brand.... Just like pellets, there aren't many actual healthy cereal choices. Cheap, colorful, false advertising on the box/bag as a complete nutritional meal. Am I talking about cereal, or pellets? lol I think a scale is a persons best bet. Know what your bird weighs. Then you should know how much to feed them. It will also give a person a quick way to telling if their birds are sick. You give them the same food every day, and they are dropping weight fast, it is time for a vet visit!
