I worked on a job once where a guy dropped his glasses into slack water on a river, downstream from a barge of gravel that was getting unloaded. The crane operator motored over to the spot, gently dropped his clamshell bucket into the river and fished out the eye glasses on the first try. I was forever in awe of his skills after that. Cheers! Looks awesome. In water resources engineering, we use riprap for erosion control. It's fairly common to use it on the upstream face of an embankment dam to prevent damage due to wave action. I have a coworker who refuses to walk on it because he's afraid of snakes ;)

No lie! I was picturing children of the future home owners climbing on that rock wall and how they scramble upon seeing their first snake.
@EngineerPEretired
@EngineerPEretired 5 лет назад
I am sure this system has a surcharge problem; the top of this wall is overloaded. Does his "soil engineer" have all his pistons firing? Plus the overloading of the toe of the footer at the corner detail with those boulders. That corner detail 9:36 also DIRECTS water to the underside of the footer; the best way to cause that footer to fail is to wash out the soil it sits on! Gator grid fabric or similar products should have been specified for this job and not just soil compaction. This engineer makes me think of the engineers that build on the hills of California and then the owners are surprised when their homes slide off the slope they were built on.

@EngineerPEretired

@@manorin , thank you for the redirect... someone else also wrote me on the side, to look for that video... I wanted to cut my loses on critiquing his work... Basically, he is doing a great job of sharing some information in his videos and I do not want people to "throw the baby out with the bath water"... Besides, he has a more manly microphone than I have... lol --- I really have to spend time and make my audio separate from my videos... Just do not have the time to spend editing... (my mac and Final Cut Pro are the slowest rendering software?)... Takes about 10 hours to render a ''canon camera video to an Apple to a RU-vid production)... Okay, back to the subject, I do find a few mistakes he makes in each video and he does them without stating this can be wrong or I am experimenting... He presents as this is the way it is done and you can do it this way also... Another example is him using two tape measures on a wall which he joins and states he is within 1/4 to half inch... At the distances he was at, NO WAY because he had an elevation change that he did not account for, the elevation change was two fold, one was the heightS of the anchor points of EACH one of his tape measures and the point where he joined them (at his location)... This was compounded by his belief that the tape measure(s) would not stretch, and that he had the ability to keep all these things level and touch each other (that was a defect there)... I use a professional equipment and an ametuer builder would use his method(s)... or a builder that will NOT invest in himself by purchasing professional equipment... With all that said, the tapes can be used buy with great doubt... In conclusion I appreciate the entertainment and would welcome the chance to educate him on his errors; so the public can get a more quality understanding of what is going on... This means I would support his content and not ''attack'' it (baby and the bathwater)... I often do experiments in construction but they are always on my personal jobs which I get to monitor and IF they fail, they go right to the trash can! (Right now, I am experimenting on a floor leveler -- based on fiber content, it is so amazing at this time... I have it on an exterior concrete (very stable base ---- and another on a wooden floor with a small amount of deflection (not disclosing yet)... which, in BOTH cases are NOT showing any surface cracks)... So far so good... Next summer, I will present the findings of these pretty awesome projects, if the wooden floor fails it will NOT even be suggested... The concrete I do NOT expect any failure and we should see a video of that then and with my recommendations... I know home owners and contractors are on a budget and want to break some rules... I am just trying to make that budget person find a product that will save them the dollars and give them an idiot proof product...

When I first saw my first video of you, as someone who teaches the younger ones coming up in the fire service, I knew this was going to be a very enjoyable and educating channel. You have succeeded at both. Your family is very lucky. And the viewers are lucky to see someone who is willing to "share" their knowledge with someone they may never meet. Knowledge is power, sharing knowledge is powerful and talks about the man. Good job, Am looking forward to a educating experience this spring and summer.

In my gut, there is a fire growing. When the rip-rap arrived I suddenly recognized the landscape I had dreamed for years. OK, I cheated and then looked ahead to hoe see this spec-house would appear. It was a craftsman! This home has been a picture in my mind since I first recognized the craftsman bungalow as the home I have always wanted. I am a stained glass artist among other avocations and an admirer and owner of Gustaf Stickley's magnificent furniture and I cannot wait to see the completed project. @ J L Eidsness He has said before that he makes judgment calls about his own safety and he shouldn't be an example of safety because he does what he feels comfortable doing. Bottom line is that he's the property owner and general contractor on site, so if he so-chooses to potentially 'risk his life', it's his call on his site. Yes, I personally probably wouldn't go without a bump cap, but I also have a tendency to bump my head on stuff. He's a grown man running his site the way he sees fit. I do SERIOUSLY applaud his decision to only risk his life instead of asking ( or FAR worse, telling) someone else to, it shows moral character, which seems to be at a premium these days. Keep up the great work Scott!!!!

Was the work being performed in this video done this month? How long since the process began? This could be resolved by a text overlay that says, "Installing The Rip Rap. I'm sure this pertains to other people too but I love when I get a chuckle out of specific parts of a video. Not because I see something done stupid or funny but just because it makes me happy. When that corner stone was being placed and it was decided that the excavator needed to come down and place it from the bottom I chuckled because of the intelligent thought and common sense that was being used. This video was held multiple moments like that just like every video of this series. I don't work in the construction industry and am an I.T. guy by trade but I've always loved machinery and when someone puts together well thought out smart content like this it is always a pleasure to watch. Should you use ICF, wood frame, pole building, steel, whatever other criteria you had. What could be more calming and satisfying than watching someone making art with with heavy machinery and big old rocks? This continues to the best produced, best presented and most informative channel and series on the net. The epitome of what RU-vid was meant to be. And I find the pacing perfect WRT video length: you take the time to clearly present the essential information, including repeating and emphasizing the important stuff, but don't drone on if you have nothing more to say on a topic. Also like that each video confines itself to the topic in a properly descriptive title: will make it easy to search the series for info on a specific task or project phase for anyone using it as a how-to resource once the series gets up there in episode numbers.

It is a pleasure watching a skilled excavator operator. They are magicians with steel and oil. Plus, watching a properly engineered rip-rap wall go up is also a treat. Too many times it just gets dumped and after the first winter rains [here on the "Wet Coast"] they fail and becomes a nightmare for all concerned. This is proper building. I am enjoying every episode.

3:21 - is that a crack in the corner of the concrete? is that ok?
@caryshaw8552
@caryshaw8552 6 лет назад
One of the things he says in an earlier video is that concrete always cracks. It's ok and safe because the structural integrity is maintained internally. In other words, that crack is very small and in a place that isn't structural, so it's ok.
@imabeapirate
@imabeapirate 6 лет назад
ok thanks! I remember him saying the cracks would happen, I just didn't expect it so soon, and before the house was built. Good to know!

Even more so, if the concrete doesn't crack the rebar doesn't do any work.

I think its just a surface crack,,,, and no concrete doesnt always crack i have basement foundations that i poured 20 years ago that dont have a single crack in them, but it does happen.

I speak from a place of ignorance but I have a hard time imagining making a profit from all the money invested in building a house to selling it.
@scythelord
@scythelord 6 лет назад
Why would you have a hard time imagining a profit? House flippers make a profit buying houses and reselling higher. The cost of building a house isn't higher than buying a new house, otherwise companies would never build them since they'd get nothing out of it.

I'm aware of how profitable house flipping can be. My comment was regarding building a house from the ground up.

It's not always profitable to build new or remodel. Decisions have to be made. There is risk. Careful consideration is required. The design budget always changes too.

My little son is going to love this episode. This little guy is in absolute awe when ever he sees excovators, dump trucks and other heavy equipment . I think he has watched all your videos by now. Especially your videos on chainsaws have been watched more than a few times. Haha. I guess he loves chainsaws even more than me. Keep up the awesome work.

I really enjoy this channel. It is very inspirational but also down to earth and doesn't idealize the situation. It is what it is and for some reason it sounds just about right. I wish I had this mindset while working on my house for several years. I think that at the minimum I'd save some nerves and wouldn't end up so exhausted and damaged that I needed several years of break before I managed any strength to continue never ending job of building and maintaining my property. This channel actually wakes me up for all the right reasons. Keep it up, creating this amazing internet vault of knowledge! And thank you!

Scott, your attention to detail is like no other my friend. The area I live in here in North Carolina is so fast paced these homes are slapped up with structural issues, foundation issues, drainage issues, etc, when I worked in construction I was the same as you are, my situational awareness was constantly ON! And everything I did on site had to be done RIGHT and perfect!!! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS my friend!!! Keep up the great working and videos!!!👍👍👍🚀

There's all the difference in the building of the thing (anything), between what I mistook for dirt, and real honest to goodness rock! Before I could say "grab the service truck", I had twice as much crusher run in my bed, than it was designed to haul. After a short but shaky run to the site, I came to understand what you mean by "God's material", rock is the real stuff of earth (I had been accustomed to the moving, of silty "dirt"). I'm enjoying this series so much...just an amazing journey from A to Z!
