I’m 18. I have an 8 month old daughter (born at a birth center) I’m currently about to start college. I’m also a doula who has worked with 8 newborns/ families so far. I want to own a birth center in the future. Any advice? Should I even go to college (plan on becoming CNM but am not sure if that is worth it in years if I can just work towards starting a birth center sooner.

Those are all great questions! There are many different routes of midwifery training in the United States to choose from. Each one has different educational training directions and time requirements. Typically a Direct Entry Midwife or Certified Professional Midwife trains for 3-5yrs. A Certified Nurse Midwife typically trains for 6-7yrs depending on if you take a break between nursing and midwifery graduate school. Certified Midwives (few states recognize that option have similar training to CNMs but undergraduate training isn't in nursing). You don't have to be a midwife to run a birth center. Learn the state regulations you are looking at starting in. There can be a community run birth center doing a non-profit model with staff like midwives are hired. who is qualified to have a birthing center? Can a nurse mid-wife? NP? Or do you have to become an OBGYN?

Each state is different. Some have birth center regulations stating who can run the birth center. Some states don't have birth center regulations. It can be the community as a non-profit business model. It could be a CNM, CM, CPM, DEM, or LM either solo ownership or partnering with other midwives or physicians in community.
