How to Start a Chaos Space Marines Army in Warhammer 40K 10th Edition: Beginner Guide 

My advice for starting CSM: invest in first aid. You will stab your fingers on all the pointy bits. Just accept it.

I will say the chaos space marine Killteam with the upgrade kit is a good start as Chaos Legionaries are the backbone of your core infantry even when cultists are meta or not.

As a completely new player having something like this is going to be huge for helping me get started collecting minis. Can't wait for more videos in this series!

I know he’s really not great on the tabletop but Vashtorr became my favorite character in 40K during the Arks of Omen so I am making a daemon engine heavy Chaos space marine army just for him

For those unafraid of kitbashing, i recommend the "start collecting flesh eating court". That is a helldrake and a bunch of accursed culists, quite cheap. Also, spare wings are allways welcome. Maybe on legionaries to make raptors? Then, "Deadwalker zomies" for 20 lightly tentacled cultists.

The Forgeworld HH Legion stuff is really nice for creating characters. I picked up a Word Bearers Tartaros Praetor to make my warband's Master of Possession. He can also double as a regular chaos lord.

In addition to the Legionary boxes, I'd also recommend the HH Tactical boxes. 20 marines for just slightly more, good for building out squads of Bolter boys or for making large numbers of Special Weapon Chosen or Havocs with the weapon sets.

The best advice that I can give is to invest in Rhinos. They're a great mobility option to help get your force around the board. Especially if you're planning on going with a melee theme for the army.

I didn't even plan to play CSM. I bought the Wraith of the Soul Forge King. After seeing the amazing detail in CSM it now has become my 2nd army. Definitely a love/hate relationship with painting though

Personally, I started with the Wrath Of The Soul Forge King box, converting all the Dark Angels side into Chaos via an Alpha Legion paintjob and careful weapon choices. (Inc. Azreal into Cypher) Granted Ive barely touched the box cause I keep buying other Chaos things, but the bulk of my points are in the box ready and waiting! GLORY TO THE ARKIFANE!

Chaos are really good right now when you get your head around the pacts and synergies. Abaddon + 10 terminators, accursed cultists and dark commune, possessed, warp talons, obliterators, forgefiends, chosen the list goes on pick a few and sprinkle in some cultists you're laughing

Possessed and an MOP go together like bread and butter! Gives them a +1 to advance and charge, and also a 6+++FNP. I run mine with slaanesh mark, and give the MOP the 5+++FNP and battleshock test enhancement and was able to take down 10 infiltrator marines, a redemptor and 3 bladeguard with them over 4 turns last games day, and the following game i was able to take down 2x5 Blightlord Termies and 20 cultists/10 poxwalkers

I've been building up a Chaos Space Marines army since...oh, last tax return season, lol. And this video has been both helpful and encouraging. As have a lot of Auspex's, really. See, I started building LONG before I started actually researching gameplay tactics, but my goal upfront was to make a sort of display piece, heavily kitbashed, super-flavorful and evocative of traitor legion lore, especially veterans of the Heresy (which I've read every single dang novel of), which is easily my favorite aspect of 40k. I didn't even have a particular legion in mind, although they're now drifting towards an overall Black Legion warband made up of Fallen Angel, Emperor's Children, and possibly Alpha Legion or Thousand Sons expatriates. What's kind of nice is, going by this, the choices I've made are easily adaptable to solid game units. Possessed, Chosen, a variety of highly customized Lords/Exalted Champions, Terminators, Havocs, and big beautiful Helbrute/Obliterator/assorted demon engine support. And a bunch of cultists whom, I suppose, are just happy to be here. I'm excited to see it all coming together, and for the eventual codex release, which I know might either make or break my entire setup, but...y'know, that's just the way of things under the Ruinous Powers (praise be!)

Step 1: Never use Legionaries. Anything Legionaries can do, cultists, chosen, possessed, havocs, etc do better. Seriously, their ability should also apply at range and not just melee. That way they become a true swiss army knife unit (That and making it so they can take 2 special ranged weapons of the same type).

While I will chuckle when the Godsworn Legions don't get to cheat, like the Loyalists, and use all the Chaos book detachments, plus their own, it will be interesting to see when the Traitor Marines get their batch of detachments, loosely based off of the Legion themes, and see what cool options they get; if Night Lords, or Iron Warriors, can actually make a real good build, but in a way that does kind of feel like them, instead of "default detachment" + "purely cosmetic paint scheme"? I know some of them have just long struggled; Night Lords want to be scary, but Battle Shock...and some detachments won't be the best ones, but I do look forward to it, anyway.

I started with the boarding patrol, best box if someone can still find it. Just a note, allied knights are not limited by points but by number (1 big or 3 wardogs) and can be in addition to 500 points of allies

Very useful since I'm starting an army with the MWG Ravaged Star minis, I really should look into a Disco Lord.

Just started back into CSM this week for the first time since 3rd. Ended up going with the Combat Patrol before they replace it with the newer one later this year. And 2 of the Warpforged Box that has 2 obliterators and a venomcrawler. Probably convert a few of my Marine Rhinos too that I just never use anymore with regular space marines. Have an Old pewter Daemon Prince to throw in to randomly use too. Should give me a place to start.

I got the old start collecting box at 50% off from warehouse in my country, a great deal made greater!

i am putting together a chaos army. started as i love the Vashtorr model so i got that box (also made the terminators onto fallen for my chaos army) then i have gotten some slowly worked up from then with some of the bigger boxes like the one with Abbadon in and the big battleforce. so now i'm making them into Iron Warriors and a Cultist army. :D

If you can find the boarding actions box for CSM... Get it! Abaddon. 10 legionnaires. And 20 cultists. Best discount box to date. But hard to find.

I'm slowly collecting a CSM army and thought the Ogroid Theridons from AoS would make great Chaos Spawn proxies: same base, and you get three large models so a lot of plastic for your money.

Best "value" way to start CSM currently is to buy used "firstborn" models, optionally chaosify them, and maybe refresh their paintjob a bit. The non-truescale size difference and repurposing of imperium equipment makes fluff sense, given most CSM's "recruitment" process. And you don't have to paint as much trim.

I have a question: what do you think about lists that proc. Daemon Engine buffs? Like for example, suppose I have a Forgefiend deathball near a Hellbrute and Warpsmith. The idea here is that the Dark Ascension procs on all the guns for shooting, and melee threats are handled by the Hellbrute. He doesn't die just cuz you put Nurgle on him and Dark Obscuration him, and the Warpsmith repairs the other engines.

If I choose Alpha Legion as my CSM army can o use a mix of both SM or a mix of both in my army and still use CSM rules?

I'm starting to prepare for the inevitable Emperor's Children release sometime in the next 5 years. I got my hands on an old Doomrider kit which I plan to use to kitbash an Outrider bike into a properly sized biker leader, and I will pray that Doomrider escapes Korsarro's basement for the release. I've also got about 40 cultists, a squad of Beastmen, and the Chaos Marines that came in Imperium Magazine. I want to get my hands on the Shadowspear chaos stuff, but I haven't really had much luck yet. I need to start checking eBay every day again.

The problem with starting with legionaries or combat patrol is that it's difficult to justify legionaries in any given list. I started out with both of these things, now I have 20 legionaries that are really better being replaced with chosen, raptors or cultists

Chaos is probably the area of 40K I'm least interested in, but I do think the Red Corsairs are cool, so it might be fun to have a small warband themed around them, possibly relying more on the actual soldiers of Chaos rather than the daemon engines and warpspawn. My only issue is I worry I'd just be restricting myself from taking effective units just for themeing, but the actual soldiers are the part that interest me, not the daemons.

remember in 2012-2018 when everyone was playing nurgle just cause he gave the most solid all around buff? lookswise he is my least favorite chaos god.

A good alternate method is to take all your squatted firstborn and run them as alpha legion.

Don't do what I did. I hadn't played since 2018 and lost most of my Daemons moving, so I decided to go CSM and start from scratch building the army I wanted, not just what was cheap. Even with Ebay purchases I'm about $600 in and still only 2/3rds done my list. Also, chaos trim sucks to paint 😅

Shame that GW doesn't release rules for all the factions at once like other companies. They do it to cycle through the powerful armies so people buy more armies while waiting for their rules to get updated and make their existing army playable. Scummy

For those inclined to start an Emperor's Children army, I'd recommend not doing too much right now, if anything. It's highly likely EC will get spun off into their own army this edition. So Soon^TM, you might see them getting a range refresh...and an accompanying removal of several unit options they previously enjoyed. World Eaters fans know well the pain of seeing half their armies, fully legal as Chaos Space Marines, suddenly rendered unusable. It's not a bad idea to take a wait and see approach for Fulgrim's sons.

Do not make the same mistake as me and buy like 40 legionaries. You will never use them and you will hate painting so many. More than 20 are overkill and even 20 is pushing it.

I would definitely read the lore, figure out which Legion you like. It's easy to make pretty much anything work now. Just don't let Imperium players try and pretend they're the good guys and you're the bad guys. That's definitely not how it is, and some people need to be reminded! 😅

Buy Primaris and convert them to chaos.

The trick is to not read any of the lore or backstory surrounding Chaos Marines, because playing them barely reflects any of it.
