What about a video showing how you bond the back of the earrings (metal) to the clay earrings. Loved your videos!

I really appreciate seeing this video. I don't have a job, my husband doesn't have a job either, and I'm trying to start a small business with this jewelery theme that I've always loved. I am not having any success and adding to that I am a very introverted person and practically EVERYTHING makes me sad. Thanks for these tips. I will go ahead with my project. God bless you.

Her advice is all good, however, the subject of finances and business establishment is the most neglected subject in jewelry making as a business. After 16 years in it, I've found that unless your crafting skills are top notch, you have a studio, a good website, a good marketing plan, a dedicated, separate source of income, and a bit of good luck, your business will starve. No business is more competitive than jewelry making. Each artisan makes his or her own style, that's true, but customers have literally millions of artisans and trillions of products to choose from. That's where you must gain ground. While you're establishing yourself, you must have a source of money besides your business. Also if you do it part time, remember your competitors, i.e., the best in the business, are working full time, are well established and have thousands of sales under their belts. Their customer base is huge. One of the best polymer clay artists in the world, whom I've followed for years, has a consistent brand, lives in a country where living costs are very low, and is technically outstanding. She's a top notch craftswoman and artist. Her family is supportive. She's also an excellent photographer and models her own work. She's got model-quality good looks too, which doesn't hurt. She's also young and constantly coming up with new, successful concepts. Every element is in place for her to be successful. I forgot to mention, she's also personally very consistent, disciplined and persistent. She's had attacks from other polymer clay artists along the way too. People do treat one another unfairly, and some steal others' copyrighted work. The web can be a weapon others use, as well as a friend to you. I think you can guess who my example is as I go along. I do not have the youth, good looks and fortune that my role model has. I do not have a fine physical set up or assured income that she has, either. Will I quit polymer clay? No. Will I quit building my business? No. We all have to bloom where we're planted, and no one wins a race unless he or she is there at the finish line. I still consider this craft to be one if the better, more satisfying aspects of my life. I've made a lot of bad clay, and some that was outstanding. I've made many pieces and sold a few. It's a journey.

@@jeanettecook1088 wow!! Seriously appreciate this reply and I definitely know who you're speaking of!! I'm a stay at home mom and my husband has the 9-5, of course still riding the waves of being consistent as a beginner in this genre of clay business! So, because im still new and not really having all the bells and whistles of website and revenue (as you mentioned), would it be safe to just do this on the side without any permits at all? Do you know until how much revenue I do make to start possibly thinking of paperwork for business? Again, thanks for your channel and being able to respond to questions!!

@@cstin3...I don't know. It takes about 3 years handling clay alone to stop making bad clay. You start making good clay after another year or so, and the technically competent clayers are 5+ years. As to the business.... have clear goals. Can you make items people will buy, or are you enjoying this as a relaxing hobby? Are you willing and able to put the time, effort and organization into your claying that's required to have a business? One thing that helps me is to study how others have already done it. The studio tours videos are eye-openers. I'd also see if I could consult directly with an established clay artisan. Most are friendly and might consider this. One thing to avoid is to make anyone in your family resent your clay efforts because it's seen as "just a hobby" that wastes family resources and doesn't bring in income. I've never had family support, as a child or until very recently as an adult, so I'm quite used to facing things alone. I feel family support is very important in all one's endeavors.

when it comes to selling your earrings.. do you make a slab? or do you make x amount of pairs and then sell? or set a certain amount of pairs for yourself that you are willing to make and then just wait until orders are made? hopefully that made sense.. lol

I am starting the process for registering my business but I am confused- so did you register as an LLC? Does that NEED to happen for an Etsy/flea market/craft show business? I really hope you see this and respond! Super confused on this because it costs $300 with my CPA, I wish I could figure out what is only ~$40. Thank you!!
