Great video, Kevin. My wife has always had a problem with hills, but no more. Watching the video got her there almost instantly when all my "husband" instruction in the past didn't! You're obviously a better instructor than I am!

Another good reason why you should always put your right foot down when you stop. Great vlog/tip, thanks!

Right foot? Don't you mean left? Putting your right foot down means that you no longer have your foot on the brake. Believe me, you're going to be much happier having your foot on the rear brake than your hand on the front brake when starting on a hill. Sometimes it can't be helped like around here with our 20%+ hills, but most of the time, the rear brake is the one you want to use to hold the bike in place.

In Poland, it is a part of the LIcence A (for motorcycle, not for a car) examin, to go to a complete stop on a hil (15deg incline) and ride ahead w/o a rollback for more than 1/2m (15ft). I would think this should be a must for anyone who wants to ride a bike.

The MSF course taught us to never wear sport shoes when riding....always wear good riding boots and I believe you're wearing sport shoes here. LOL. I see riders here in Seattle wear everything from sneakers to flip flops! Also, that's hardly a hill...that's just a slight incline. In Seattle, we have KILLER hills..almost straight up and down where you feel EVERYTHING shift back. You REALLY have to know how to handle your back brake and throttle. Before I had learned this, I got stuck on a hill and had to slowly back down it since coordinating my throttle and front brake, on such a steep hill, just wasn't working. Now I can handle the hills...but it took a lot of practice :-) Thanks for these videos. They are great.

Did you trade the Valkyrie for a Tenere? I use the rear brake going up the hill, and the front brake backing down the hill. I guess what ever is most comfortable to you. I'll have to try your method.

Brand new rider question: how does one decide which method to use? Is one better than the other in certain situations, or on certain inclines? Thanks for all your videos and advice, I'm so glad I came across your channel and am totally hooked!!
@MCrider
@MCrider 5 лет назад
There’s not really one preferred technique over the other. It just depends on which one you are most comfortable with. I prefer keeping my foot on the rear brake.

I think the MSF class should teach these options. I took it, and don't recall much of a discussion, and certainly no practice on the flat space we did the riding portion of the class. I ended up dropping my bike foolishly trying to u turn from a stop when on a hill. That is another unusual situation that would be worth covering. It's not a fun mistake to make!
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 7 лет назад
Depends where you live. In most of the US you never see an incline greater than a couple percent, so there's no reason to practice. It's just a matter of working the friction zone. If you can do a u-turn, then you should be able to handle this without any trouble. But, if you live in a place like Seattle or San Francisco where there are hills that are more than 20%, you'll definitely want to find a residential street to practice this on before hand. My best advice is to pace yourself up the hill if you see that traffic is already stopped and try not to stop completely. Othwerwise, rear brake and left foot bracing. If that's not enough, and it won't be on a monster 20% hill, then you also apply the front brake. Really, it's not as hard as it sounds, you just have to get through the entire process quickly before you start to roll back down the hill.

In Buffalo NY, there are few hills, so the MSF course didn't deal with it...which they SHOULD have b/c when I came out here to Seattle, I got stuck on a killer hill and didn't know what to do!

As an instructor, you may want to ask the budding rider to give you their watch or a phone. Put it under the rear wheel or pretend to put it under the rear wheel - then ask them to get the vehicle going uphill :) Worked like a charm for budding drivers :)

Hi there, I ride tons. Came back last month from a 7,500 mile ride across the USA. I went on an 18,000km ride last year to South America. Next week I'm heading on a 30,000 km ride through 3 continents. Ok, so I ride in the worst of 3rd world traffic, crap roads and whatever. Biggest, biggest issue I still have is stopping and then starting on a serious uphill incline -- like come up from an underground garage and having to stop to pay at a booth or whatever. It could be a stop light on a serious inclined road uphill. I burn the clutch out all the time -- I just can't get the hang of starting up on a steep incline. Any simple tips that can help me out?

what is the best technique - and what gear is best - when going down hill? I live in Ireland and the city and county I live in is very hilly so I will be starting, stopping and moving freely on a nearly constant slope! Any advice would be great. Thanks.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 7 лет назад
You use the gear that's relevant to the speed the bike is going and the speed the engine is turning just like at any other time. Be aware though that you lose most of your front brake in these situations though as your effectively already doing a stoppie even before you apply the brake. Add a couple extra seconds to your spacing and apply more rear brake and less front brake to avoid the fishtails and stoppies.

Just trying to the thing programed. I mounted it on top of my helmet. I did manage a short video by stopping in a safe place, turning the camera on manually, and putting the helmet back on. I was using my cell phone as the control. It stopped recording when I hit the button on the cell, but wouldn't come back on unless I stopped, and restarted manually. I suppose I really need someone to show me how to work it. And I can play the short movie on my lap top, but can't move it to the lap top. Do you know an instructor by the name of Doc Holiday?

I was 2 up with the wife on a hill at a light with traffic behind and tried the rear brake method and was afraid I couldn't balance my Ultra Glide, thats gonna take some practice. It's a whole other thing 1 up easy.

+Bigg Redd In that situation using the front brake might be better.

MCrider Yeah probably so. When it's just me I can balance it fine and use the rear break. I got the big bike so the wife would ride more, now I find I can't get out of here without her. Lol

This isn't really on topic for this video I know but does anybody know if you have to take the msf coarse in your home state or can I take it in a different state an use the certificate to get a license in my home state. I really want to ride this year but all the classes are full here in Maine till end of September.

MotoOutdoors find a motorcycle safety foundation class in your state .... they are in most big cities. ... and cert is good for life and whole country .... dont forget to have dmv add your endorsement to your license or its not legal .... in Florida cost about $250 for three day course at college campus or harley shop
@bobdylan6198
@bobdylan6198 7 лет назад
doesnt matter what state you take class in ... legal in all 50
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 7 лет назад
@kenny moyer, the state here works with the schools to ensure that they're living up to the requirements of the state to get the license. Theoretically any school using the MSF curriculum should be able to do it, but out of state schools aren't necessarily given the right to issue cards to skip the exams.
@jmackinjersey1
@jmackinjersey1 7 лет назад
MotoOutdoors, I would check the source first, go to your local DMV and ask them first. But the certificate will be in a sealed envelope that you take to the DMV after you complete the class.

I prefer the rear brake method. If you're at a long traffic light, you don't want to sit there and smoke the clutch.
@ronaldweinert9980

I don't mean to be snarky, but Kevin's demo does not appear to represent much of a hill. It ain't as easy as he makes it look when you are trying it on one of the hills of downtown San Francisco or Seattle, especially when you are on a R1150GSA with a 31 inch inseam and some A-hole in a cage camped 6 inches from your rear license plate. You really tend to choke when the traffic light goes green, believe me!

That's kind of a weak hill. I was expecting you'd be on a meaningful hill. Around here we've got hills that are upwards of 20% in town, some of them are closing in on 30%. On those it takes front brake, rear brake and bracing with the left foot to keep from rolling down the hill.

@jmackinjersey1
@jmackinjersey1 7 лет назад
Chris L, I've ridden all over Seattle, and surrounding areas and only ever needed the rear brake, and there are a lot of steep hills in that area.
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 7 лет назад
@Jeremiah McKenna, I know of at least one hill where the rear brake isn't sufficient to keep a bike from sliding. It's a rather short hill, but exceedingly steep and it was definitely not enough to use the rear brake alone and IIRC I needed more than bracing. Brakes were perfectly fine, it's just that the hill was too steep.
@stephenmarseille5425
@stephenmarseille5425 7 лет назад
Agreed with Chris L; also in Seattle and there are some spots where if you don't have both brakes down and foot down, you're rolling. And sone of those spots, unfortunately (short-but-steep-hills) also have terrible pavement conditions (rifts, potholes, gravel). I'm looking at you, John St. between Madison and 23rd. Ugh.

There's an insane hill in seattle where i was in a standard transmission car in a red light, night and raining, with cars behind. I was terrified but the when the light hit green my mind emptied, i let go of the brake and instantly balanced the clutch and gas to freedom (and not an insurance claim). I swore off manual transmissions and shudder when I remember that hill. (I was visiting my friend in the Capitol Hill neighborhood if I remember).
