A guide to starting a roundhouse roof, based at Butser Ancient Farm in Hampshire, UK. Using this method to erect the first rafters, no scaffolding is needed. This works up to a house diameter of around ten meters.

I noticed a circle near the top of the poles, are the poles attached to the circle and then the pole tips cut even with the circle.

I'm building a roundhouse 24 inches diameter and have no idea if I need a center post or if this way will work without a centerpost???? Help

Are those fresh or dried rafters? if fresh, they will bend real fast.

What keeps the walls from pushing outward with the downward spreading force of the rafters....if the rafters sat on the ground outside the building, that would be the answer.....but they didn't reach the ground.....I'm puzzled !

at around 3:10 they show that the wooden beams have been cut into and the wood the rest on have cut outs to lock them in place. This system allows for the woods suspension

+Don K The Wall planks are overlapped and tied with large nail spikes. It relies on the integrity of a circular chain. Then basically each rafter counteracts the outward pull of the one across from it, so the walls then take the load in vertical force.

Oh, I see.....you have the horizontal chain so to speak, going all around the perimeter of the roof.....that's the circular chain you speak of ? Clever.....thanks Seth !!

@@SethK1 The planks are under lateral tension and they usually split in that direction even at rest by the mere fact of drying. The laths could take the tension if there is more than rope to hold them. I think the building is held up by optimism, expensive material like boards and nails are no guarantee for strength.
