Sticking to one subject could be your downfall. As a consumer I get bored when an artist doesn't switch it up, it gets boring. All the greats like Picasso, Kanye, Beyonce all had the ability to transform themselves not stick to one style/ subject like she suggested
chiMarkgames You can surely work with different media and sell on different platforms, but you must be willing to build one brand first. Without the main business, it’s hard to get enough exposure, traffic to make enough money. It’s like Inditex made Zara super famous, then they made other brands.
You can easily switch up your medium, being a consumer and seller of art Ive noticed once you build up a style and fanbase, the quality of your work will be more important and loved by your fanbase then style you're doing it in. So have fun and experiment...doing the same thing over and over again gets old.
Susan Charles same but I think it would be disrespectful to my artistic mind to make it just a hobby and I’m more then willing to work on my art career. There are a lot of tips and advice for how to be a pro artist online, and I mean think about it art is more public you will reach more people online just work on your craft, get a paypal know how to be businesswoman online then 💥 bam I’ll be starting with commissions on insta maybe you should try it too as a starting point too.😊
Honestly guys don't put too much pressure on yourself, just love what you're doing, work on your online presence, surround yourself with the right people and get rid of everything/everyone that are toxic to your own growth. There's always a way, like I'm a full-time illustrator living in Madagascar which is an island where my job is not considered as a job yet lol. But now I have an international agent, few clients around the world and a RU-vid channel that is slowly growing. Just cheer up, you're gonna make it :) And I love your channel Mellissa :)
@@nicolejackson2755 Dear I have decided about my future jewellery business and I found name that basically match me and things that I do. Do you have Ig? I can give you some advices. I have changed my personal instagram to one fashion dedicated and this is how I started to build my own audience... So whenever I am ready with all my online store and designs I have arleady part of my audience that can be my potential client. It's my Ig annuniqe and text me there so we can speak more ❤️ telle also what is your business idea?
I don’t know if I’d take advice from this video. I started painting during quarantine and I use Instagram to sell my paintings. I only started selling them recently I’ve made just over $200, one of those paintings is on its way to America and sold within 30 minutes of me putting it up for sale. I also don’t stick to one style. I’m very much into abstract painting but I like to do cartoon-y landscapes here and there as well. I strongly believe in creating what YOU love, and people who connect with your art will find you and love you/your style enough to continue following you. It just depends on how good you are at executing your content and marketing as to how quickly you grow your following.
@@brandibrielle Omg now I am shy ... I don't have all of my paintings on there, I usually take commissions or go live and show what I have available but the ig is @thequaintgallery
@@mariemela5632 Hi there! it is @thequaintgallery but I usually take commissions so you wont see all of my work on the account. I usually go live and show what I have available.
As Soon as I started my art business i immediately started making sales from commissions and my original art! Not saying it to brag but every artist don't start off with the "struggling artist " story. However, I'm still hustling and grinding to get where I want to be as an artist. I think most sales come from people recognizing your passion and skill!
Same here. No struggle for me. Took my art serious and been doing commissions for a year or two @ $150-$400 range and selling my original pieces for $2,000.
I kind of have a small art business and I wasn't planning on it. I just randomly started getting purchases from family friends and then from their friends so it kinda just came to me😂
I have so many art mediums....thats how my childhood was I hate hearing I need a niche....but I'll take every other point into consideration! I do have an Etsy so far though!
Im 14 and since i was 3 i have always been so passionate about it. I have made 40+ dollars off of my art. It is really hard making money off of it though especially because im a cartoon artist. And it’s hard constantly hearing discouraging comments because of my parents. This video really really helps and gives me that extra boost to keep going and never give up my dream
That’s the thing, I simply cannot just have one thing I do. I have a special place for art cause I’ve been doing ever since I was a toddler, but photography has also become a part of me. Idk I think with enough perseverance and motivation, you can do both.
Getting your stuff out there is more important than one style. Just pay attention to what sells. That being said ,do what you love and you don't have to be just a full time artist. My airbnb money is allowing me to get back into my art without worrying about sales. Sales is just a success metric. But sales doesn't have to be, it could be a following is more important as a metric to you. Either way keep trucking
Thank you! I find your words not only informative (accurate and to-the-point) but motivational as well. Your art is amazing, you are amazing, and I am sure your words have guided MANY lost souls out there. It is very easy to quit before you even start in this business. I easily get overwhelmed or distracted and inadvertently redirect my attention to something else before coming back later. My eggs are all over the place, in all the baskets. Anyway, just wanted to relay my admiration and appreciation. Thank you M.
Excellent advice....so many people giving advice and wanting to charge big $ to tell you how to do this.. One of the best and most honest no bs tip! Thanks so much!
It's hard because I'm not that patient and sometimes I need acknowledgements.. But I love making art even without the intention of selling it and it's what makes me feel the most proud and satisfied. Thanks for the video, I need to stay calm and keep doing my thing
I totally looooved the way you talked about the 9 components for a business model canvas. It sounded simple with bite-sized info, making it appear achievable..before watching this, "business plan" sounded like "colonizing Saturn"
I've been following you on Instagram for a while now and I'm glad I finally came across your RU-vid channel! Every other video I've seen on starting an art business has not been realistic at all. And you really just laid it out so simple and I really really appreciate you for creating this video. I'm just starting out with my art business and I'm still trying to figure it out.
I'm an artist by blood, meaning artistic ability runs in my family. My father was an amazing landscape & portrait artist... he never sold his work because he was not concerned with that, but people constantly asked him how much would he sell "this" piece for or "that" piece for? I'm also a self-published author, and I have books in multiple genres (Sci-Fi, Poetry, Dystopian, Urban-Drama), and let me tell you... I have more success with my books & my art by working in multiple genres. If sticking to one genre works for you, then do that, but that doesn't work for everyone and it limits your audience. Some of my art fans don't care for my abstract paintings, but they love my landscapes, some of my book fans don't care for my sci-fi, but they love my poetry books, but I would have lost those landscape & poetry lovers if I had stuck to one genre. Then I have my commissions, who have ideas & visions that push me to push myself & when I do it and see the look on their faces, I'm wow! I did that sh*t! So I could never see myself in just one genre or niche. It's the same with my merch too; I do a calendar that does pretty good every year and I just started prints & decorative coffee mugs. Ok, this is much longer than I planned (the writer in me is coming out), but overall the video still hits some very key points, provides good insight, and I still subbed! The link to my website is below if you want to check it out! fkennethart.com/
Niece. You did this proper. I'm bout to jump in, both feet myself. So of course, I'm doing the diligence. Fifthyleven other vids, just like this one. Except that your format, outline and focus; have untouched by any others I've seen. And as I listen, I'm like, "Well, Yeah!" And most I've already considered. But not everything. You got me, gotta pause and take notes. Nice! Thank you, M. I'm glad at you. And glad for you.
I'm just a newbie here in yt channel I been listening to and following .and your right I been making paintings and started drawing at a young age, art for me is not a hobby I live with it .but unfortunately I really hard to make a living out of it ,thank you for sharing ideas hoping it could help me as a newbie ❤️❤️❤️
just stumbled upon you! from january to now you've gained SO many subs on youtube!!!! that's incredible! thank you so much for sharing this information- it's been a dream of mine to start my art business and this is a nice kick in the butt
Thank you Empress...and i will be deffently be making my art buisness a reality this year....and you just made it so so much easier with this video......one love here in Jamaica
Thank you for this! Much useful information and very encouraging! May I also say - as an artist and avid RU-vid-MUA-watcher-and-makeup-lover - your skin and natural makeup is so beautiful!! Love your hair, love your style, and love the caption on your shirt!! OK, I'll stop gushing and check out some of your other content. Happy New Year, and the best to you in 2020!!
I think the most successful ppl have tackled many different mediums (art, music, acting, etc) but it really comes down to if you want to put in all that work to keep it all alive. I personally feel really chaotic with what I create because my creative mind takes many different routes so I feel you. But you can still continue with different kinds of art with out posting EVERYTHING you do on one platform. It may actually be better to keep them on separate accounts to attract followers on social media. The algorithm is real in that sense. Also trying to take this advice for myself. It shouldn't have to be that way but its hard to gain a following without a clear statement of who you are and what you have to provide to ppl.
Yessss!! & @@Lindsey.Kinzinger i completely agree!! You’re more than likely going to turn out more successful when you have a variety of medias to appeal to a variety of tastes in your audience!!
Thank you so very much. Very informative. I do huge carvings on wood and looking for a platform to get an art loving audience to see them first ( for seeing ls believing) and get their opinion before I move further with marketing and selling. Any tips please?
love it....thanks for that...its like you read my mind....will keep you posted on my progress...i feel a good vibe and connection with you. cause you keep it real.
@@Mfalconer oh for sure, its all about picking that one thing... when i make it you and your work will be one of the few people mention that inspired me. thank you
I don’t know if art is my passion. I love creating, i always spent time drawing instead of listening to the teacher in my middle school and high school days, and it helps me when im feeling sad or depressed, im really scared to start new things but i feel like maybe i can do this too!
Useful information, thanks. 💗 The nitching down part is a little different for me (I find it monotonous to stick with one style or medium). I really agree with the 'you don't need a middle man to sell your art' advice (which unfortunately some are still trying to sell the idea in 2020).
I get that it can be boring to stick to one style. But you can still have a niche in terms of your genre even if you work with different styles and mediums.
The "focus on your niche" tip really struck home with me. I don't know why this video specifically hammered that into my head now, considering how many times I've heard it before, but nonetheless thank you.
Please dont feel pressured to stick to any one thing. Its healthy to branch out, try new things & get a fresh perspective. You can do many things & do it in your own personal style.
This was a Very helpful video!! I subscribed mostly because your art is wonderful. The video on prints was what I have been looking for. Thanks again!!
I think I understand what she is saying, but I think it's her specific style, but I'm an artist who loves working with all sorts of mediums and art styles because it's innovative, and it helps me find my identity in art, which usually what inspires me. But I do see how her way is very stable. Just do what you love and people will be drawn to the passion in your art
Thank you. It's so good to get back to basics. I will follow your plan to ground me out of this feeling of being overwhelmed. I too have lots of creative things that I'm good at. I have to focus on one art category a day because I do have many gifts of creativity, but I like how I need to focus on one niche and then once established I can bring in my wood burning or jewelry making. I also do parties with art.
As an artist I would say finding your style or preferred medium/ product list is more of a journey. While finding a strict subject base and limited structure works well for some people who want to fill a narrow scope and produce a very specific product, others have a wider range of artistic ability and inspiration which can only be satisfied by exploring many different paths and approaches. When building an audience its fine to have a variety of content/skills, what's important is tying everything together with a common theme. Do what you love, try different things and experience the vast possibilities art enables, incorporate those experiences into what you love and grow. Its great to have a goal and a passion but remember its not about the destination so much as it is about the journey itself.
Your video is really helpful!! Full of relevant important information, thank you so much for sharing!! Your video also goes in depth, which I appreciate because a lot of other sources have been vague. I wish you luck with your art business, you deserve more recognition!! I was doing so many different things in art -landscapes, portraits, random still-life, cartoons, realism, etc.- thinking that being able to have variety would give me an edge on starting up a business, and I’ve had little success. You rarely see artists have success unless they are very specific in what they draw. I never thought about that until seeing this video, thank you for this invaluable information!
Having business tips for artists coming from another artist definitely adds validity! Your explanations are great and I completely agree with all of your points. Thanks for putting your tips and your art out there! :)
Wonderful tips! I too have been at it 5 years (3 years professionally). A few months back I got a business advisor & started working on my business plan. Truth be told I hate the business side & wish all I had to do was create, but that’s not realistic nor properly caring for my passion + craft. I feel like we’re artrepreneur sisters lol Thank you for sharing 🙏🏾💜
Not going to lie. I have been struggling with coming up with ideas to start my own art business! I was scared before and I graduated in 2016! Thank you so much for your knowledge and help with this! I feel more confident now!
Your videos are SO helpful and your art is so inspirational! You mentioned that you already studied business and I was wondering where. I'm looking into doing the same :) Keep being true to you and being totally amazing! Thanks for sharing your artwork and your tips with the world!
May all artists be blessed with authenticity and a non-judgemental place to create art. ❤️ May all inner artists are unleashed and all inner callings heard and answered. ❤️
making money from art is a daily grind, I am not motivated by the money, I just love creating art whenever I have a spare moment, usually 3 hours in the morning I am either creating art or learning how to sell/ market my art, my Goal is to transiting to full time artist within 2 years and leave my 9-5 grind, knowing what you want to achieve and why is important and my what and why have evolved and changed, and I enjoy creating a few different forms of art such as portraits, female characters and I also want to get into kids picture books :) great information thanks for sharing
The one niche thing didn’t stick to me. I paint with what I’m feeling at moment, it could be landscape, abstract, minimalism or flower bouquets with deep details. Different people like different things, why do I need to make clear that I’m “one type painter person” when I can do all of them? More options make it more fun tbh ^^ Good video though
This definitely appeals to someone who wants to build a business. Not only do I make music on the side, I also write, so the one niche idea has already driven me mad my whole life. When I've decided to only create art or only music or only words on paper, I have been an extremely unhappy camper because all my abilities need expression. If the goal is to make a living, that's the way to go, though.
You're so passionate about everything you say. Thank you for your advices. And gosh I have to say that - girl, you're soo pretty! Greetings from Poland
I'm starting my art business and more stuff bc I luv art I threw this panda like a while ago and I made something and I just need to paint it thanks for advice!
Loved your video. Learned a couple of key things that I didn't even think to incorporate into my "rough planning" phase of getting into instagram for art biz. Thanks
Thank you for the advice !! I’m such a newbie to the art business world and this helps so much, no bs as other videos I saw on YT. You just earned a loyal subscriber!
I think few people actually make a living doing their passion because their attention isnt focused for the most part on their passion, its spread around to friends family kids hobbies side hussel procrastination entertainment and distractions etc something will never take off unless its a MUST Like you said you have to live through your passion daily for many hours of the day I would say 4-8 hours per day has to be focused on your passion and making incremental progression each day on growing the different aspects of it that result in you making a living from it
