BeeJay…THANK YOU for being straightforward, patient, logical and using common sense in explaining this process. I could not agree more that our purpose is to provide VALUE. I am an artist among other things & I do not have a You Tube channel for that, but might in the future as I decide what and how I want to go public. I am just retiring from 52 years as a Hospital/Clinical Pharmacist but have been drawing since I was knee high to a grasshopper (as they used to say)! I too invested in an iPad Pro 2 years ago and have been painting, mostly for others…birthdays, honors, special gifts…(printed on canvas) and more. I do use Procreate and am still learning. Your approach and wisdom are palpable and I greatly appreciate what you bring. Jimm , P.S. I agree with the guy who posted just ahead of me….People who want something for nothing…’would you give me an iPad genre people’…are selfish, go out and earn it like the rest of us!
I’ve watched other artists give tips and advices for small art channels, but the ones you provide in this video are way more valuable. Thank you for the motivation and for being straightforward.
It blows my mind that random strangers are messaging you that often just asking you to buy them things. That just seems like such a bizarre and rude thing for somebody to do. I mean even if you were well off enough to do it, it's ridiculous for an internet stranger to come ask for it out of the blue like that, and especially the fact that they are asking for such wildly expensive things.
I'm just getting started with leveraging youtube to build an audience, provide value, and bring people to my courses. You're providing huge value here. Also, your subscribers have almost doubled since you made this!
These were some great tips. I especially agree with you about doing real time videos (what I do on my channel) as I realized I learn better when I get to watch from beginning to end and so I try to provide that for my viewers. It show that people like that as my watch percentage is also higher on those videos, meaning people watched for longer while hopefully learning something. I guess I'm on the right track :)
@@BeeJayDeL I'm going to try to do real-time videos as well. This might be what I need to do since I've been struggling with timelapse style videos and took a lil break but coming back soon. But I'm still confused about how a lot of art channels I follow all they do is timelapse and pull in over 30k+ views a video when all they are doing is speeding up the video with b roll footage here and there. No talking just music.
I clicked your vid for the art tips, and had to show my respect for what you have just done for these kids. I had this issue years ago with the viewers chasing free things and the pressure that has on creators. well said! not many have the balls to do this! all those who see this comment, give this man a follow for simply giving you the reality of this game. peace and love brother
BEEYay!! Thank you for saying "Just because you put the word 'Tutorial' in the video title, does not make your Time-Lapse video a Tutorial." When people do this, it drives me crazy-er than I already am. This is a great video overall! I just discovered you and look forward to watching your other videos.
No interest in making my own RU-vid channel, but I watch everything you make! Your videos are high quality and down-to-earth-good. Much of this information also helps us who are LOOKING for quality and valuable RU-vid tutorials! Thanks!!!
I was playing with the idea of starting a YT channel to show my art I do with Procreate. Already after your first 2 tips I decided against it, because you're absolutely right. There are already tons of art channels out there that are 'disguised' as tutorials, while they are really not and if they are, they're quite bad. Well, anyway, thanks Beejay, for preventing me to set myself up for failure ;-)
neo, just saw your comment. just DO your youtube, you'll be fine, trust me,no matter if you have 50 comments and 10 subscribers, just DO, and in time you'll see if you like the result, but just don't give up ❤❤
@@Gabriel-gabriel Thanks Gabriel, in contrary to my comment from last year, about 2 months ago I started a YT channel for my art. I uploaded about 30 some video's and it's going so-so. I like having a YT portfolio, if it were only for myself. I'll just have to be patience for it to see grow. If it doesn't than that's fine too. I do make a bit of tutorials, but I'm not comfortable showing myself or speaking in my video's (yet). I do narrate with subtitles and try to edit my video's as well as I can. I'm sure there's an audience for everything, we'll just have to wait and see 😊
I'm primarily a digital artist who had been trying out streaming on twitch for some time. This gives a lot more insight on what to expect from sharing content, regardless of the platform! My goal will mostly be to share my work with friends but it's good to be prepared, as you said. Thank you for the information!
This is very interesting. Personally I only just started in Feb to document myself getting back into art after years of procrastinating. Then years of avoiding art all together, and back to procrastinating. Working on being more consistent, and still struggling with editing, but it's a huge learning experience. No expectations only using my phone with a mount, just want to be able to look back and see how far I've come, if people want to watch too that's a bonus 😊
Super helpful tips! I personally just want to share my ideas and characters because I love talking about them but dont want to annoy my friends by talking about them for hours and I'm hoping to help people feel inspired and represented
I love your videos for all these reasons! I’ve just started with Procreate as a complete newbie and you don’t assume I know a thing which is awesome, cos I know nothing… about Procreate that is! Following your step by step stuff has taught me so much. My fave video so far was the one you did with your wife as the things she struggled with was me to a T! I have a channel for mixed media stuff and follow all of what you talk about in this video… I wish more creatives would watch this video of yours before they start out! You didn’t get where you are in the first 5 videos you posted… it has been 3 years of hard graft. Thanks for all you share with us, I wish the world was filled with more people like you… it would be a much nicer place!
I really want to start a channel but I can’t seem to nail down my art style. BUT while searching about starting a channel, I found your channel and that is very exciting. Great content!
Same reason I'm thinking about starting a channel lol.... just to document my progress as I learn about how to art. Just idk what art to get into, and it will probably just be random everything's that I find interesting and if I start a channel it won't be consistent enough to keep people interested in watching
I appreciate the first piece of advice. It’s so easy for artists to get caught up in the potential for fame or wealth instead of being fully invested in their craft.
I don't plan to make a YT channel as of now but I watched anyway because I'm a fan and still found some valuable tips that would translate into my other projects. Thank you!
Your only 1 of 4 you tubers that I watch for procreate content ! Your an awesome artist and I recommend your channel to everyone wanting to learn procreate ! Absolutely LOVED the 31 days of Halloween and followed every tutorial! Hoping you’ll do another 31 days challenge soon lol 😂
Thanks for sharing. Small youtuber here. I think you are right about having the right goal like providing the value to the viewer but also think of it as a business which can sustain itself. Money is a factor in making that work. So i believe successful RU-vidrs are striking that perfect balance.
Wow, 20k for a whole year! Got 2 more years on the mortgage so I guess I won’t be changing the day job anytime soon. Love your channel, followed you for a long time, you deserve to at least be making a living from your videos. They are top notch and deserve a much bigger audience. Your teaching and explanation of the subject is very thorough and too the point. Wishing you all the best for the future mate. I have a 12.9 iPad that is a couple of years old now, but the new iPad 2021 with the latest chip has my attention. Don’t worry, I’ll purchase it myself mate. 🤣🤣🤣 All the best from Scotland pal...⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you! My problem is figuring out what value I want to give. You did give me some inspiration to work from. I came back to drawing 5 years ago so Imposter Syndrome creeps in when I plan my channel.
Imposter Syndrome can creep in for everyone! Don’t let that get to you...don’t worry about what other people “might” say...just put yourself out there and give it a shot. Don’t let “you” be the thing that holds you back! ❤️❤️❤️
With this guy said at the start about making a channel not to become rich, but to provide quality content for your viewers is an amazing mindset to have when making your channel
Hey BJ! Thanks for sharing these 5 valuable tips. I was hit hard at the beginning of your video about not expecting to gain fame & huge money by doing youtube. And then another blow to my stomach when you mentioned about the timelapse art videos and not defining whether the videos are suppose to be educational or entertainment or both. Your sharp and to the point advice are really precise and they are what I neede to hear. So, thank you again. I will rethink what value I am going to provide for my audience. 🙂
Fabulous! This really helped to make sense of things. I am not interested in doing a RU-vid channel for drawing myself, but I found this video very educational and answered many questions I was wondering but never asked. About people asking yiu to,buy them an iPad, good grief, that is super bold and rude in my opinion. I appreciate that your teaching is real time and that is one of my BIGGEST reasons I watch your channel. I also, like that you reinforce each step you take and you announce what you are doing next. I end up pausing videos, I do so with you, because I am slower at completing and I’m a a perfectionist. I was taught in school, follow the teacher, do exactly what they do, after the lesson and in yiur own time, modify or do it different. I am working to break this but I have had it so engrained into me, mother an elementary school teacher, I fall into wanting to do it exactly as the instructor. Your videos allow me to follow that and yiur teaching style is conducive to how I learn. I also, appreciate how yiu have brush sets and you explain them, and you explain why a specific brush is needed for what step. Yiur videos are easy to follow, and I have success with a completed project I can be proud of. (However I’m still working on the Halloween slime monster as I can’t get a couple things right.) Time lapse is very frustrating and often leads me to not complete a project. Lastly I like that your projects are for the most part under an hour. Yes they take me longer than that, but the instruction time is perfect as I don’t get overwhelmed or bogged down by the length of the video. So BeeJay, you rock for me and I love the characters you create and help me or create. I have incorporated a great deal,of what I learn form you into my mandala type designs. I have developed what I call the Doodle Dala and the Animal dala where animals, characters, cartoon things appear in my designs. I have just started doing more using your eye style modified of course, but I will send you some in an email. I have shared before with you. Thank you for all yiur hard work and I recommend you constantly to people. You are a fantabulous teacher! Leah aka LeBonesCreations.
I agree with this, it isn’t pleasant to just see a time lapse- not helpful at all and I always close those videos and am left feeling frustrated. I enjoy your channel.
Dude, your videos are great! They are practical and fun to draw along with. I used to watch "Draw with Jazza" to practice but those days are long gone.
Between patreon, sponsorships, and merchandise and sales this guy is still making a comfortable living and probably having a ton of fun. Wanting to start for financial success is still a good reason to start
Thank you very much for sharing these tips! I'm not sure what type of channel I want to create -- a few vague ideas, but nothing solidified yet -- but I still did get a lot out of your video. Thanks!
Hey man this was SUPER helpful for me! I started a YT channel with next to no knowledge or understanding of YT at all and am still very very small. This video helped me refocus my efforts take a step back to ask myself how I can best add value to my viewers. Thanks for putting this video out there it's much appreciated!
I love time lapse vids but really love "process" vids more. I have just put up a tutorial on my channel using time lapse but it was slowed down for most of it, especially at the start. I agree that you have to let the viewer keep up with you and "draw along" until they get to know your style. I subbed to your channel this is great content, thank you.
I found your channel via this video. Great tips, thanks. I particularly connected with educating for all audiences, that's what I do in my work, which I am planning to take online. My purpose is to be able to send videos to future clients, as my niche will be so super focussed that I see very few on the topic. But as it's for that, I have no interest in YT 'fame' at all. I just want to explore a simple form of video to promote my small business locally.
I haven't drawn in a long time due to life/deployment/school etc...and also I have an apple pro that I haven't used and trying to get into drawing again. I subscribed to your channel today because I like how you explain your material and I think learning from you will be fun. You don't assume people know something which I have a problem with some RU-vidrs with their so called "tutorials". Thank you for educating us. :)
Loved the tips. I'm just starting a channel to post my processes, but really like the idea of education. So I decided to at least give some tips and explanation with closed captions instead of just posting time lapses. Thanks for this!
I’m struggling with ataxia and anxiety…. My art… good or bad helps with my hand eye coordination and also as a stress release. My son wants me to do shorts to start to get comfortable and learn the basics of how it all works. I don’t even know how to draw on my iPad or own an I pencil…. So many questions on even just how to set everything from account info to logo and branding to gear and even approach. :/
i started my art youtube, and i am doing this so that people can learn art in beautiful and easy ways and i probabbly believe that one day people will give value to my art and will learn lots from it🥰
Thank you for these tips! I don't have a channel yet but with your wisdom I might try it out! Altough, I have to do my homework first. People really emailed you to get a free ipad???
Thank you for this video BeeJay! Really appreciate the info and your laid back character. I don’t do cartoons but I believe I may learn a few things on procreate thru you, possibly in an easier manner - so I subscribed! Please do more vids about behind the scenes kinda info that we need to know! Thx 🙏
You didn’t crush my dreams with the tax paper you made me think realistically, but I think we share a passion in art that’s why I’m starting mine I’m 15 and this type of content really helps ground me, great video keep it up!!
My videos also are in real time. When possible, I provide some form of entertainment (😆 beyond my bloopers.) My main focus is just to do a painting and explain what I am doing and why. Sometimes highlighting materials that I'm impressed or disappointed with or just general tips that I learned getting to the painting I'm discussing.
Hi Beejay. I started my channel 2 years ago and now I have 40K subs. I teach realistic portraits. And a little Disney-stuff. Thank you for your videos!
Thank you for this video 😃 you definitely gave value in your tips, there were a couple there I haven’t heard from any other RU-vidrs, particularly in regards to the “art videos are a little different” when in comes to recording. Needing good lighting sounds like such an obvious thing to know. But it’s amazing to me that I haven’t come across any RU-vidrs talking about lighting when talking about the exact subject of creating an art channel. I guess it’s assumed knowledge to them 🤷♀️ Also, I can’t believe anyone would ask you to buy them an iPad! That’s so odd to me 😳
Edit: Discovered my Modern Mac, Blocks ads very efficiently (caught me by surprise actually). So my question is no longer relevant. Great content in this video by the way.
lol, the thought that people just randomly ask someone for a hand out is mad.. I started my channel mainly because I do demonstrations for clubs and I thought this would be a way for the club members to find out if i was worth going to the meeting for.. lol... my videos are getting better (thankfully) so to make money or fame are the 2 lowest reasons for me. All of the points you have made are things I have been working through and learning, wish I had seen this video before I started. Although I have never tagged any as a tutorial thankfully.
