How To Start Clicker Training Your Cat

Clicker training is an easy way to teach your cat fun and practical behaviours. A clicker is a handheld tool that makes a clicking sound. We teach the cat that one click equals one treat. Then we can use the clicker to pinpoint a behaviour we want to reinforce. For example, if you wanted to teach your cat to high five, you would click as soon as they raise their paw. Now your cat knows that raising their paw is the desired behaviour and they will start to repeat the action. Adult cats and kittens can both learn with clicker training. Start by tossing a treat away and encourage your cat to return to you. When they approach your finger, click and toss another treat away. We are setting the foundation for clicker training by reinforcing your cat for their attention. Once your cat is happy, attentive and eager to work, you are ready to teach your cat other behaviours.

Doing basic clicker training to teach my cat how to give a paw also helped me teach him to retract his claws when interacting with humans, something he hadn't picked up in his previous home. I rewarded the few times he gave a paw with claws retracted with extra treats, and then slowly phased out treats for clawy handshakes. Now he's super gentle while giving his paw and even outside of training he's become better at interacting with us without claws!

i just adopted a cat a month ago to be my esa for college. i noticed she was way more affectionate then other cats i’d met including my family cat but that she picked up on things fast! she learned her name within two days, she learned when she was being called in one day and she follows where i want her to go. thanks to you i’m gonna be able to take those smarts to the next level! thank you!

Bought your kit, am reading booklet & have a trainable, very bright rescue kitty who already follows my hand but still working on reducing the food obsession (over excitement, must devour all food) & bad kitty habits like incessant counter surfing, thievery & occasional aggression. Overall a wonderfully lovable, normally gentle sweet boy who gets lots of love & play time but has committed a few mild attacks which I bring his attention to toys vs my hand or whatever he's going for. Hoping I can break bad kitty habits as he is overall a great kitty who just needs direction.

Thank you for your videos on clicker training. I am really enjoying them and working with my cat Lynx. Long story short he was a stray that I believe may have been lost or abandoned as a kitten. He started coming into my work and hanging out everyday and then gradually into our office and gym area. I decided to take him in but being on his own for what the vet estimates to be one winter at least because of the frost bite damage on the tips of his ears he has had a difficult time with boredom and adjusting to the life of an indoor cat in a small condo. The clicker training has really been making a difference. We walk on a harness everyday, he sits on command and now we are looking for new things to do. I hope to see more videos on how to clicker train cats especially how to keep your cat active and agile during the Pandemic. Since we have stopped walking and converted to patio time he is bored and going stir crazy. Looking forward to your next video. Have a purrr-fectly wonderful day. Stay safe.

Hi love the kit, just realized my kitten was coming up to me because he was hearing the clicking from the video! Sometimes my super hyper kitten is just too preoccupied with the surroundings to follow commands. As he gets older will he be less distractible or is paying attention something I should be training more? (When he wants attention he'll sit in front of me while I work and do spins and high fives by himself for half an hour, so he can be attentive at times.)
@CatSchool
@CatSchool 4 года назад
Thanks for the note!!! Try to play with the level of distraction. In many of my original videos, I used to train Jones in the bathroom. You can also pay attention to those times when your cat is eager to work; training when your cat is food-motivated will help. Try mixing up the treats you are using. The best rewards can often trump distractions. You can also focus on training behaviour that improves attention, like Stay, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WLetRnjCEtU.html There are lots of variables to consider, but I wouldn't want you to focus on age because you could limit your cat's purrtential :) Keep practicing and thanks for training with us!

I want to clicker train my cat and teach her to come when called, but the food that she loves is a canned food. Its like a gravy with pieces of chicken in it, and I would need to use a spoon for it, so its very hard to train her with (like having to toss the treat so she goes away, and then giving her the treat every time she comes back). Is there any other way to train her thats easier for canned food?

I have two brothers that are mostly inseparable. One big, one small. One black one orange. One bold, the other shy. Should I separate them while training? If not, how do you train two cats at the same time with out confusing them or one of them getting jealous of the other, especially with their different personalities?
@targettuition

Hello Great video. Once the cat is trained do you have to use the treat all the time. ie Lets say you taught the cat not to jump on the kitchen counter if they returned to doing it but you gave them a command to get down and they did, do you need to reward them again?

Hi! I loved your videos. I have two kittens, but whenever I show them a treat they go crazy and start biting and scratching my hands. I can’t seem to stop them from going crazy with the treat and there’s no way possible to guide them with it to do something like seating for example. Is there something I’m doing wrong? I really want to train them
@CatSchool
@CatSchool 4 года назад
Daniela, you can try to lower the value of the reward, i.e., work with something a little less exciting. The target stick is a great tool to keep the cats away from your hands. Check out our website for more training tools and resources. You are always welcome to enter our online classroom and get more training support.

My cat isn't food motivated at all - we can barely get him to eat regular food let alone treats. (He's turned his nose up at pretty much everything available in my country.) I'm not sure how to train him since what he enjoys the most is playing endlessly and I get the feeling he'll see the end of play as a punishment rather than the play itself as a reward...

My kitty is deaf. What should I use to replace the click?
@rosiecat
@rosiecat Год назад
I hope maybe you were able to track down someone who has trained a deaf cat for advice. However, in the event you are still looking for this advice, here's my suggestions. You can't really replace the clicker, but you can still use rewards. You'll want to be sure to reward REALLY QUICKLY while teaching new behaviors. I have not trained a deaf cat, but have trained with rewards without a clicker years ago, and it still works - it's just a little harder to mark the EXACT behavior. Be sure to develop a distinct hand signal for each command. This will be your sign language with your kitty. Although I haven't trained a deaf cat, I have a deaf father, and am profoundly hard of hearing myself. That's why all my videos are hand captioned for accuracy! (If you happen to be someone who uses captions). I'd start with the easy touch a target stick, but pretty early, I'd teach "look" or something to mark eye contact. You may need to teach kitty to respond to gentle vibrations, such as foot tapping, to get kitty's attention - even if you need to work this in gradually to desensitize kitty so the vibrations aren't scary. I'm not an expert, but these are my suggestions since no one else replied, and since I've spent a lifetime with one foot in the deaf experience, as well as someone who has done obedience training with dogs, and recently learning to train a cat. So, take it for what it's worth, and I hope it helps.
