Happy gardening.

Thank you so much for recommending that people use SEED STARTING MIX or SOILLESS mix for seed starting indoors! I cringe when other RU-vidrs say that people can use any kind of soil/mix/compost & that it's no big deal to use something other than a seed starting mix! You explained it perfectly (I've been trying to find the best way to explain it to people!) "There's no natural predators in your house" It is so much harder to keep pest issues under control one you get them!

I kind of did the same. I used one tray with no dividers, filled it with coco coir and sprinkled in the seeds. After they grew in I put the whole tray into a larger container full of water and the soil washed away from the onions and separated so easy.

Morning Luke. I have started my onions like this. Also followed your method of starting beets 3 to 5 seeds per cell. I think its a great idea! My problem is I am not sure how far apart to space each plant or cell when transplanting in garden. I also am in zone 6, zip code 14174 so I need to plant soon I think. Thanks for all your guidance. I am 70 years old and learning more every day thanks to you and Living Traditions !

Im in 5b. The video is a little late for me, I started onions in march and they have been outside for about a week now. Dense sowing is the way to go. I used old plastic rectangle food containers that I drilled holes in and grew way more than I needed. I ended up giving away about 100 seedlings.

I have grown onions from sets for many years and have never had a issue with them flowering. I do have a hard time getting big bulbs tho. I attribute this to the type of onion and not because it is a set. Sets are a great option for home gardeners who are just starting out or experienced gardeners that just don’t have the time or space to grow from seed.

START from seed is the best for onions. But I have to say I plant both.just in case seeds fail, and for the most part I found that the sets do best when planted very early, less scapes formed. But you are correct that they don't store as well.

You ever tried multi sowing onions without separating? I'm trying it this year. 6-8 seeds in a 1" cell, thin to 5 max if they all germinate and plant the whole cell as is, at a foot intervals, when they get a couple of inches high? They grow together and push themselves apart. Lot less hassle than pulling roots apart.

Received a bunch of seeds for my birthday. Is there a rule of thumb for what seeds to start indoor vs. outdoor?
@andreagrowsthings
@andreagrowsthings 3 года назад
Usually the seed packet will say on the back what the recommended method is...it also depends on your zone. If you’re in an area with a shorter growing season, it’s usually good to start most things inside because that gives you a head start. :) But there are some things like root vegetables like carrots, radishes, etc that aren’t good to transplant so they’re better started direct in the ground. I’ve done a lot of google searches that are “how to grow (plant) in (my state)”. This usually gives me relevant information for my specific area so that may help you too. :)

I tried onions last year following your video without much success. I thought I started late/planted too early. Then I tried again this year starting earlier (12 weeks before last frost) and still my seedlings don't look too strong. I think the issue is the size of the pots. I have smaller 6 cell trays I use. I'll see how they do this year, but next year I'm gonna try with those bigger 3 inch trays you have. I'll try some with high density of seeds like you do, and a couple with them lower density and compare. thanks for the tutorials!!

I don't think it's the summer solstice that triggers the bulb development. Pretty sure it's a certain number of hours, for long-day varieties, typically 14-16 hours. So once day lengths reach, e.g., 14 hours, the bulb dev. begins even if your max day length (summer solstice) is longer than that.
@douellette7960
@douellette7960 Год назад
Yes that's correct. I enjoyed his vid but unfortunately he didn't explain this well at all. Bulb formation is triggered by a particular photperiod or daylength that depends on the particular variety you're growing. Short day types would be like 10-12 hrs and long day types would be 14-16hrs. Intermediates in between of course. Short-day varieties for southern areas of US and long-day varieties for northern US. In SC Carolina I start seed in Dec and plant out in garden by Feb and harvest in May or early June. Must be a short-day or intermediate daylength variety
