Today I will teach you a simple way to start improvising a melodic guitar solo. Creating a melodic guitar solo is not as hard as it seems!!! Using the framework of the C# minor pentatonic scale we will look at the triads with-in the scale. You will never look at pentatonic scale in the same way again! Their are chord shapes right at our finger tips. You intermediate guitar players will get a lot from this slow paced melodic solo lesson. Here is a link for this awesome backing track. • Guitar Mellow Rock Bal... . I needed this lesson early on for sure. Hope you have some fun with this melodic solo lesson. Happy Jamming everyone!!!

Excellent primer for the CAGED system without calling it the CAGED system! I found that what you are doing here is alot of what David Gilmour does in his most iconic solos. The way you explain this, my improve is sounding less scally and more melodic. Thank you for making this video!

The difficulty that I have (well, one of them!) is to hear the chord changes. I seem to concentrate so much on finding the right notes and trying to play them musically, that I miss the chord changes, and then get lost and have to fall back on the pentatonic scale, which isn't a bad thing I guess, but it's tricky to try and pick up the chord changes again. It's just practice, I know......and my practice is always fun and enjoyable which makes me smile :) Thank you Rusty, I so appreciate your lessons :)
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 Год назад
Good to hear from you bud! Another way is to count the beats. In this track each chord is played one measure(4 beats). Counting these measures is very helpful. I do that quite often. Just tap my foot to the music. Every four beats the chord changes. But it’s definitely not an easy thing to do. Sounds like you’re having more fun with the guitar. I always appreciate you watching my videos. Have a great weekend and let’s talk soon.🤛
@realjumper
@realjumper Год назад
@@rustysguitar1 - That's a good tip Rusty, thank you. What I have been doing today is counting the beat like this: C# - 2- 3- 4 / A -2 -3 -4 / E -2 - 3 - 4 / B - 2 - 3 - 4 .....etc etc. If I call out the name of each chord instead of using the 'one', it helps to keep me on track!!
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 Год назад
Exactly right! You can also hit the chord shape for one or two beats, and then play a couple of notes for the rest of the measure. This will get you in the mindset of the chords changing around you. Then you will start to hear them changing also. This will help you be more confident for sure. Hope you have fun this weekend with that guitar buddy. Keep on rockin.🎸✌️🤛

Okay, so for years I have tried to just learn the Major Scales, all 5 patterns, and currently am working them out in all keys and in all positions depending where my starting note is, takes half my day sometimes, because it is so completely complicated, but this is where "keeping it simple" really is better. I need to take a step back and learn the 5 note scales and see those shapes because my playing can really use this understanding, no one really explains it quite like that. It is really difficult to play the changes when there are so many notes whizzling by. I really think David Gilmour knows this stuff and so should I. Thanks!
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 Год назад
Learning scales is important. But it shouldn’t be our primary Improvising tool. We should be looking closer at the chord itself. Finding the triads and arpeggios, and then connecting them with the corresponding scales. That is definitely the Gilmour Way. I did it backwards for years. Concentrating on scales but I had no connection with the chords I was playing over. Keep working at it. Thanks for the feedback Danny. 🤛

That was a great lesson! I think I'm going to start messing around in C# now. Also, what is that chord progression, i - VI - III - VII? Never heard of it -- but I like it! 🤘 The only thing I didn't catch was why you went to the D# note before coming back to the C# note (~10:14). I mean, I get that it sounds great, but I'm just not real sure about the context. It's what, like making a C#add9 chord? You're the man, man! 🎸🌟

Hey Crash 💥 looking at the C minor scale notes, C#, D#, E, F#, G#, A and B. So C#m is the 1 chord, the A is 6, E is 3 and the B is the 7 chord. The chords are built off the C minor scale. So you were right! And going to the D# note is just one of the notes in the B chord shape, as the track plays the B chord. Glad you got something from the video. Talk to you soon.👍

@@crashdaddy261 yes if you hit that note and go right down the triad, it has a great sound before you go back to the C#minor chord. Rock on.✌️

Possibly a simple explanation , I am 80 years old and a Rusty "Groupie" ....My query is why the C# Minor pentatonic scale over this E Major piece. ?? Why isn't it being played over the E Major scale?? I know that going back 3 frets from a minor scale gives you a major ..but does this work in reverse. Cheers from Joe in Oz ... you are a good man.
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 6 месяцев назад
Hey Joe, thanks for the question. The C#Minor and the E major pentatonic share the same notes. I chose the C#m pentatonic because of the dark vibe of this progression. Meaning, I feel the melody being drawn back to the C#m chord. In this video, instead of using the major or minor scale within the pentatonic, we are looking at the chord shapes within the pentatonic scale. I believe it’s easier to play more melodic when you do it this way because you’re forced to listen to the chord changes. But you can absolutely look at this progression as E major. And improvise with the E major scale. There’s really not a right or wrong way. Different players visualize the fretboard in different ways. I hope I answered some of your questions! Enjoy your Sunday, Joe.🙏

Hey Rusty, have a quick question. Can you demonstrate or perhaps explain how to mimic the sound of a tremolo bar on an electric guitar that has no tremolo bar? My electric guitar doesn't have one so, I'm accustomed to bending strings to try to get close. The song I've been long wanting to get down a bit smoother for example is, Chris Isaak's hit -"Wicked Game" Only 3 chords but the tremolo part is something else. Thank you
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 Год назад
Hey Tim, that’s a tough one. The Wicked Game tune uses trem bar with full chords. You really can’t mimic that sound without a trem bar. With Single notes and double stops you can give it an up and down motion. Thanks for your support Tim! Later bro 😎

Hey Rusty! Great video as always! I went to hit the like button and it didn't work so I hit it like 20 times in a row and it still didn't work. I decided to try the thumbs down to see if it was working and of course, it was. Then a pop-up said, "Your feedback will be shared with the creator." I tried to undo it and, what do you know, it wouldn't work lol! So I'm just telling you all this so if it did tell you that feedback you would know it was a mistake and I'm sorry!

Slowly coming to grips with chord tone soloing. Put together and have been practicing over A major backing track, A - D - E . Then went on to the next backing track which was A7 - D7 - E7 ... would I just use the A major chord tones I have been using or do I need to do a new set of chord tones. In my mind I related 7s with the number 2 and 6 of a scale . Struggling. Can you throw some light on this please . Cheers Joe from OZ.
@rustysguitar1
@rustysguitar1 6 месяцев назад
Joe, for me, I always choose the pentatonic scale that fits over the chords first. For the major chords, I would choose the major Pentatonic of the first chord. For the 7th chords I would choose the minor Pentatonic of the first chord. Then locate the chord tones of each chord within that scale. This process works anywhere on the fretboard. Don’t overthink it and just have fun. Catch you later mate. Cheers 👍
