I really wish cities would realize how truly beneficial chickens are and lift bans on owning chickens in certain urban and suburban communities.

The problem is people always get carried away and some people would have 25 chickens and three roosters. It would be a mess and the neighbors would be super unhappy☀️❤️☀️

@Becca Where do you live in Cali? We cannot even legally buy chicks or fertile eggs, because of the Newcastle Poultry illness. Post office will not deliver any. The Tractor store is not allowed to sell them. It's all under the table, but I notice that many are afraid of being reported. It looks like similar situation to what is currently happening. Cali is always 1st, in shutting down self sustainability.
@amandah2490

There is always someone who spoils it for everyone else, that's why! Nobody wants a rooster living near them and some one will buy a rooster. Unless you keep the coop really clean they will smell. A couple of chickens might not make much noise but several will. Chickens can attract vermin and the less care taken of those chickens the more the chance of vermin. And this woman is saying "city coop" but seems to be referring to suburbs with gardens.

I am loving this coop!!! The door... that is a game changer! GENIUS. I have tried other tractor designs and they are too heavy or aren't sturdy. I'd love to be able to get my children involved in helping to care for the animals as well, including moving them when needed. If I put the wire on the bottom, I could even use these for my rabbits. I love having them on grass, but they can burrow out in only a few hours. I bet it would even work for a small amount of meat chickens or hatchlings too.

I got a heart omg! (Last week):) You inspire me Miss Becky. I live with my grandparents and family on a 13 acre land. It is beautiful. We didn't plant things for a while because we had apples and blueberries already grown on our property. And our property was covered in thorns. A few months later we got the lay of the land and all those thorns went bye bye. We found apple trees, blueberry bushes, and Plum Trees! Its so cool. We have 6 dogs on our property, I hope for us to maybe get one big protecting dog, but I want it to be the same one of the same dog breeds we have. Golden Retreiver, Poodle (Probably not) maybe a black golden retreiver. Or even a golden doodle. I think a golden retreiver is the best, though. So I hope to get a few horses. A mule or donkey (for work porposes (maybe riding maybe)). Get a cow, maybe a goat. Not suure. Thats all for now!

I love the design with regards to the entrance and the roost. My only concern would be predators, specifically the ones that can dig because even in the city they can still show up and become a problem. I'm guessing you would have to dig fencing around the coop or maybe there is an easier way?
@cademe
@cademe 4 года назад
Use hardware cloth, not this fencing. Anything that is bigger than a 1" gap is a predator risk. Animals like raccoons and opossum can reach in and tear your birds up. Snakes can get in and will eat the eggs, and even chicks. Rats also are a big risk for cities, especially to chicks!

Hi Becky! Love your positive vibes and useful videos. I am completing the construction of my villa and I’ve dream of begging chickens forever! My only problem is where I live: literally in the desert. And I mean the middle eastern type. More than half of the year we are in the 100F range, July and August can reach 120F. From my current searches I have found local farms selling Silkies and Brahmas so I guess they do ok in the weather. The most advised type I read about is the Fayoumi. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks

Bush Girl Karen, there are breeds that lay in winter in Alberta, Canada. Also, there is a webpage that covers zoning in US cities, just google zoning for chickens. My city limits homes to 6 chickens, but no roosters. The rules to pay attention to is it limits how many feet your chicken coop must be from neighboring home structures.

Hi Becky, I think your channel is very informative and upbeat! I have followed you a while now. And have a question if you don't mind answering. What do you think would be the monthly cost to feed and care for chickens? Maybe estimate what a newbie would need to expect to put into starting up with maybe 15 chickens?
@BeckysHomestead
@BeckysHomestead 4 года назад
15 chickens eat a lot. To keep 15 hens all laying, maybe 40, 45 bucks a month. I keep chickens for quality eggs, so even though I could get cheeper eggs at the store I don't want to☀️❤️☀️

Good morning Becky! I have been feeding my hens a combination of natural layer feed pellets, along with crushed oyster shells, grit, and diatomaceous earth daily. I also feed them scrambled eggs with shells 2-3 times per week. They usually get around 6-7 hours a day free ranging. I managed to keep strong egg production throughout the entire winter. Hi Becky. I built an enclosure just like this for my cat, who would beg me to let him come outside. So, now I will re-purpose it for my chicks who are getting too big for their bin. But...I have a question. I have read that a space of 16 square feet is enough for 4 birds. True? That would be slightly smaller than the one you have there. Thanks so much for all you teach us. Besides learning how to do all of these things, it's very entertaining.
@sharoncourt75
@sharoncourt75 4 года назад
Hello the space is base on 2 things, is the choock going to be imside this enclosure all the time? or are they going to be allow to free roam everyday for a couple hours? if in the cage all times space needs to be bigger, if frerooam daily then smaller. I have a run 9 ft x 40 inches wide atach to a coop made of a tween bed (38" x 80") is with a board in the middle that makes it 2 floors top to sleep 1 end and 2 eggboxes at the other end, in the bottom they can shade or roll in the sand ( i dont use hay) so in this space i have 6 hens 2 are full size 4 are bantys and they go crazy when it rain/snow all day and i dont let them out , so an area of 70" x 9ft is ok for 2 big hens and 4 bantys as long as they go out everiday at leats 2 to 3 hours. If not roaming it needs to be bigger even do it seems prety spacious.

I just got chickens - they are 4.5 wks old. I'm sooo excited and they are so cute! They have been in the brooder in the room with me where I'm working from home and on conference calls all day so they know my voice. It's adorable. I have been putting them in the coop for the last few days because the weather has been warm and they are "feathered out". The coop has a little house and run. I've been bringing them in at night back into their tub because it's still 50 degrees at night. Also it rained today, so the coop house is dry but the run doesn't have a roof. Now I'm thinking I should build a roof for the run part - because we do get big rain storms in Nov-Feb here in NorCal. Anyway, my question is about rain and them getting wet, do I have to worry about that and what do you do with that little coop you have built. Is that a waterproof tarp over them? Also, what about predators with that coop you have built? We live in a neighborhood, near open space, but midday, the second day I put them in the coop, a fox came into our yard...which I have never seen before!

Should we jump in and get all four chicks (going to get black austrolorps) from the get go? If yes, how much longer would we need to make this city coop to accomodate four? I personally like a wooden henhouse and a big wire run. I know I like chickens and will always have some so it is worth the investment. If your just starting out, go small !!! Tons and tons of people get chickens and quickly get rid of them or the poor chickens get sick and die. If you like keeping them, you can always get more. ☀️❤️☀️

This might make a good movable pen with modifications for my area. . There are far too many predators here that will dig under or even tip over lightweight coops. Do you pin down this structure? You’re lucky to not have to fight coyotes, foxes, raccoons, bobcats, and hawks. Good job!

Hi, where do you buy baby chicks and what do you do about predators like hawks, raccoons, etc.?

You can buy baby chicks from your local feed store or buy it online in their websites.

It’s a shame my city is so picky about where we can keep our chickens. The best place for them would have been in my side yard where they would be protected from the hot afternoon sun and high winds by fitting snug between my house and a large wooden fence. But no, our chickens have to be a certain distance from the home forcing me to put them against my back fence, the hottest part of my yard with no shade.

Hey becky! I have a situation that I hope you'll reply too! There has been a rooster roaming around my front yard for about a week now, I've tried calling farms(i live right next to a few farms) but no luck yet! Ive been feeding him some scraps as well as giving him water. But is there any advice you can give me for the time being?! Just so that he is safe! I would really appreciate it!(:

Sounds like your doing good giving him water. Maybe buy him some chicken food and build him a coop if you want to get into chickens☀️❤️☀️

I'm getting 2 hens regardless of regulations. We're not in city limits, and I'm hoping 2 black australorps will be quiet enough to not bother the neighbors. I love this coop! How will it hold up against predators? We have raccoons of course, but also a few foxes. Would covering the entire coop with tarp each night help protect the girls?

It works fine for me. You might have to make adjustments like add wire to the bottom and use tent stakes to tie it down. Nothing works for everyone and every place☀️❤️☀️

I'm considered keeping chickens in the yard but it's technically illegal where I live we also have eight feral cats that I'm afraid would honestly make lunch out of them funny thing is I also own an 8 lb Chihuahua mix and I think he would just be afraid of the chickens I mean he's kind of scared of the cats already

hello becky, i get eggs from a farmer lady who has around 40 chickens and they are walking outside all over her farm and even out by the highway, and they go into a barn at night. so, do you let your two chickens out of the cage to walk around once in a while? and man, the sadness and cruelty of commercial chicken farms is ungodly and should be treated as a priority as bad as cattle farms and the coronavirus!

@@BeckysHomestead cool, and ya know, if i was a chicken, i would want a larger cage to get a tad more walking room. have you thought of making multi-level coops or just a bigger coop? i have two acres surrounded by farm land and all i have is 4 indoor cats, ha, cannot believe i dont have a dog, but i will when more money comes in, am 64 and business is slow.
