I feel like what will happen next. I start to feel like giving up coz I don't know if I'll be able to regain it back. it's changing and it's really hard for me to sing high notes 😔

I used to be a great singer until I got bronchitis- I’ve never been the same since. I can’t hit high notes and my voice is strained. I haven’t been singing for years. It’s kind of heartbreaking to lose one of your only talents like that. But I’m going to start trying these things and hope to find my voice again.

This is exactly what I wanted 😭 I was not a singing freak but when a teacher made me realise the worth of my voice I gained confidence and started practice daily I used to practice for hours enjoying my own little concert this went on for about two to three years but then I stopped I didn't even hummed for months and now a few days ago I met my friend after a very long time and they asked me to sing for them and realised how I didn't even hummed for this long period...when I tried to sing I feel my voice cracking up and I was huffing between I was taking the totally wrong notes and they was like what happened to your voice and I feel like I've lost my biggest treasure I've lost my passion......I am just praying again and again that I'll get my voice my talented back. I'm new to subscribing to RU-vid posts. I am a musician and used to be a voice major. Many years ago around the time my mother died, I was under stress generally, was an organist and was asked to help out in a cantata for the former organist who was entering Seminary school. I strained my voice and developed laryngitis. My doctor wouldn't see me so that my voice became so bad that I could not sing. I've had my vocal cords scoped and was told to seek a speech therapist; however, she was not a musician and only made me copy some suggestions without giving me any musical exercises. I used to be a 1st soprano in a select women's choir at B.U. Music School. I am having other physical problems--possibly Barrett's esophagus and definite stomach ulcers, so I put off being scoped again. I really miss singing and can't stand it when I do try, because either my voice cracks, or I can't stay on pitch, or both. My range has decreased. There have been a few times when I "catch" my voice for a few minutes, but then I'm hoarse, and my vocal cords hurt. I haven't sung in over twenty years now. After my biopsy for Barrett's and my ulcers, I'm going to be scoped again, and the doctor says that he can recommend musicians to help me regain my voice. I also know some organists who have recommended some voice/singing therapists. When you press "subscribe" on your video box, does it take you to all your videos? Does that mean you are subscribed? I found what I watched helpful, but I watched another video by someone else who seemed to be combining therapy for public speakers and vocalists. If you or anyone can advise, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!

So happy to have found this video. As a classically trained singer, I was extremely active until about 6 months before Covid, so it's been about 2.5 years since I've done much. I have a performance I've been asked to give next month, and my voice really needs reconditioning! My major issue is that 2 notes are super weak - probably right at my break (B 5 and C 5). I'm an alto - below those notes I have a powerful and big chest voice and above those two notes, I have few problems in the upper range. But when I try to do that B or C, there's simply no strength or power. Working on blending that break and reconditioning with your exercises. Thank you! Vicki

I haven't sung continuously for 5 years after I get sick. Now I'm well, I want to pursue singing again. After a long time of being weak, I have no strength to sing songs I usually sing, now I can tell my voice is different from what it was before. My vocal range specially on my highest notes sounds different and it's like I'm struggling to reach it. My vocal strength also deteriorated, I have no absolute control over my low notes, it sounds like I was being struggled too.. This will be a great help for me because I don't really know where to start.. I'm afraid of loosing my precious vocals.. 😢

Thank you for taking the time to explain what the benefits of the exercises are and how they should be done Chuck; not too many vocal teachers can explain "how" an exercise works. I'm not a fan of the "Nay"as a vocalizing sound - there are far better vocalizing sounds one cna use to achieve the same result. IMHO its an awful sound that no one will ever use in singing. Blech! Great to see young people becoming entrepreneurs and choosing something that will help the community as a whole instead of something just in their own self interest.

Thanks Kevin. My daughter and her partner have a big job ahead of them. The space is really great, but it's over 100 years old and so the up keep is relentless...and expensive. Several of my subscribers have generously given there time to vote for the Clubhouse...which is so helpful. If they stay in the top 10 they will receive the grant to build the wheelchair ramp and restroom which will help so much. Regarding nay or ney...I like it because of the diphthong. The "a" portion is chesty and the "e" portion is heady. I find a lot of uses for it as a tool to help in a variety of situations.

I used to sing typical Indian classical songs, the hardest Indian type of singing, since I was 3 yrs old. When I was 14 I started singing trending songs more and completely forgot where my voice suited most. Now my voice is completely different. It's feels hard to reach high notes whereas that was easy for me when I was young. This feels sad. I want my original voice back.

I have come to understand Indian Classical singing is very demanding on the vocal cords. You are definitely not alone in this. Great video sir! I love those exercises ! It’s not very common to see so it’s great to be reminded of them. I loved how you explained their benefits too. I went through a drastic and difficult, life-changing year and it lowered my mood and became a heaviness, and it was very lonely and difficult. Jesus had been sustaining me throughout and I know it had to happen so I can be the person I was meant to be pre-birth. But I did neglect my voice during it and stopped singing. You sing when you are joyful, you stop when you are sad. I’m a soprano so you can imagine the sound of neglect. I almost lost the passion and I had to fight for it and I’m getting head on back into it. I’m grateful to be at university studying music in the industry and so that helps me not fall by the wayside. So that’s what happened to me and so your video is very helpful for my journey. Subscribed. Thank you sir and God bless you.

I haven't sing since 2 years, but I have a feeling want to back get into it. But also can you give me tip on how do I keep being motivated to sing consistently and keep love singing for a life time ? The reasons I stopped singing it was because of burnout and fear. Cause If I get back into it, I want to feel the passion and interest more than I used to and keeping that interest :)
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 7 месяцев назад
For me nothing motivates me like performing on stage. So I'm much more motivated if I have an audition or rehearsal or a performance that drives me forward. In your case, start simple. Make a list of 5 songs that you've always wanted to sing, rank them in order and start working on the #1 song. It also helps me to know that in every way what you are undertaking is 100% possible to achieve. Most important, have fun. You may want to do Karaoke with friends...attend some concerts, etc.

I'm looking forward to trying these and hoping they can help me recover from voice weakness I've started having the last month or so. I've been decent at singing (for fun, not professionally), and my top range has actually gotten smoother and more relaxed over the past year, but lately my speaking voice seems to wear out easily. I come home from a night out with friends and am a little bit raspy the next day even though we weren't being particularly loud and there was no smoke. Allergies have been pretty bad this year though. For the first time in my life I'm on vocal rest, and while I can feel the difference, I worry about how to come off rest without re-damaging it? I've also become aware of having been speaking on occasion with my voice "pushing" from my throat instead of being breath-supported from below. What tips do you have for consciously breaking that habit?
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 2 года назад
When coming back from vocal rest, try this one thing. Stop eating after 7pm. I've been amazed at how much better my voice feels doing just that one thing. Breathing with the assistance of the diaphragm is a matter of practice and you are already taking the first important step...being aware. Awareness will help you check yourself throughout the day. This will lead to better result. Good luck!
@DharaGrace

I can't do the bubble lips. Especially when lifting my cheeks. It only works for a second or two. Then, I'm outta breath. (Yes. My breathing needs work.) I have gone 10 years without singing outside of humming around the house, and that turned to whistling because I no longer had any range. I also learned a breathing technique to help with mental illness, and in learning that, I had to stop using my diaphragm. It was called "soft breathing" and worked with stomach muscles, not the diaphragm. Anyway. It effed up the diaphragm breathing that was introduced to me as a young child by my singing parents. It was always natural for me to use my diaphragm when singing or just breathing. So after 10 years of me doing nothing, old musician friends and prior bandmates are wanting me to sing with them. I know i should be *very* patient with getting my voice back in shape, but I had been singing my entire life with ease, and then nothing between 50 and 60 years of age so I have no idea what this level of learning is like. I used to have fantastic range, but now I can barely last a couple minutes without my throat getting sore. I'm hoping these exercises can help, although I think it's gonna take more that a couple weeks. 😉

This is really embarrassing, but I'm in a wheelchair so when I sing my diaphragm is compressed. I do my best to keep proper posture and everything but when I was in choir class in high school I found myself limited and what I could accomplish without a little extra help. As in, advice onhow do I actually get the air support that my choir teacher wants me to have? That was always her advice but she could never tell me how. I auditioned for the more select choir in my school and didn't get in and when I asked my choir teacher why it was mainly due to air support. I again asked her how I could get more air support, and she basically said I don't know. Try sitting up straighter. 😤😤😤 Okay, so here's the thing. I'm disabled. I can work on my back strength but my body needs to be taught what to do, not just told. If you want me to sit up straight you need to model exactly how you want me to sit, otherwise my body just goes ??? She did her best to demonstrate, but it was still very confusing.And there are some days where my body just won't do what I ask it to. I don't want to give the idea that I was making excuses. I tried really hard! I worked my butt off. The advice I was given just wasn't helping. Anyway, I vowed never to sing again after I finished the class because I was so frustrated. But it keeps haunting me. Aside from One karaoke night, I haven't sung in about 7 years. I used to really love it. Sometimes I wonder what could have been if I had just stuck it out a little longer and developed confidence with the somewhat limited range I had before trying to challenge the limitations of my body. I'm not saying that challenging one's limitations is bad, but I wish I could just tell my insecure high School self to slow down a bit and have fun with it. Thanks for these exercises and listening to this little story. This time around I'm doing it for myself so I hope things will get better.
@PowerToSing
@PowerToSing 3 года назад
Hi Natalie: I would say begin with what you can control, and leave the other until the last. When there is a limitation of some sort, I think it's possible the body will compensate or make it up some other way. I would concern myself with vocal cord closure and balance with the air that you do have. In many instances, air flow and breathing is held too responsible for the outcome when it's actually the larynx too high or the vocal cords too tight or too loose. Good luck to you!
