It’s all relative to where you are and what you’re doing, but I like to bring a waterproof breathable shell boot (OR Brooks Ranger without foam lining) and I find that if I keep my boots or liners on in the breathable shell while I make camp and dinner, they will mostly dry out. They still get cold that way, but they warm up quickly and are easy to handle as long as they’re dry.

I just went on my first overnight winter camping trip (snow shoeing) at Mt Rainer and struggled to fit everything in my 60L pack. Do you have a couple of suggestions for 70-80L packs for a woman 5’5”, 180lbs, average length torso? I was probably carrying more stuff than you folks might (tent, white gas stove).

Thanks for sharing this conversation. I missed it live, hopefully you can pass along this question or anyone else watching have an opinion please share. I'm considering a bivvy sack for tent or tarp camping. I'd like to hear opinions and product recommendations.

Is this for winter backpacking or 3-season backpacking? And what kind of bivy sack (waterproof or breathable)? I'm not a fan of waterproof bivy sacks for any season or application. Breathable bivy sacks are a good combination when used with a tarp and quilt -- it offers bug protection and reduces drafts, without having to set up the tarp. Good system for arid areas like the southwest and mountain west.

@@skurkaadventures I'm looking for something that is breathable for all seasons. Primarily used in my tent or hot tent, but in an emergency could be used without.
