A pro tip from my husband who is a chef is to rinse fish that smells "fishy" in cold water. It will freshen the fish meat and give it a milder flavor.

Money saving freezer bag tip: If you have lots of small portions of meat (I like to do taco meat in 1lb portions), use sandwich baggies to separate portions, and then toss ALL of your sandwich baggies into ONE gallon freezer bag.

I do this too! For burgers, broth, ravioli/tortellini, shrimp, scallops, crab - anything really that I might want to pull by servings. When doing this, I still put the quantity of servings on the baggies but also the weight of each serving and the calories for each serving

I was raised this way. Shopping for EVERYTHING ON SALE when possible, then prepping/storing/cooking for now and later. It works SO well for families of ANY size. I used to do it when living alone and didn't know how to cook "small". I had meals for months! I shared. LOL! We also season some of what we freeze. It makes for that much less to do and the meal tastes GREAT!

I always add where I get it (Costco, Smith's, Walmart, etc). Because then if there's a recall, I can know if I have any of that recalled meat.

Working solo mum of three here. Buying in bulk on sale and freezing is a life saver! Saves $ and more importantly for me, saves time. I buy meat on special, divide into portions and freeze it. I also buy veges on special, chop, blanche and freeze those too. Then one every 6 weeks or so, I take a weekend afternoon and cook in bulk. Meat, sauce, and veges. Simple food I know the kids will eat, like nacho mix or spaghetti/Italian mix etc. Then I freeze the meals in portions. So on an ordinary weeknight, when I've worked all day and it's 6pm and I need dinner on the table now. I just have to cook some carbs (microwave jacket potatoes, rice, nacho chips, mashed potatoes etc), and quickly thaw a frozen meal in the microwave. It's cheaper coz I buy in bulk on sale, and saves time in the long run. Plus I know we're eating good home cooked food, but it only takes me 15-20 minutes to get a hot meal on the table. #winning

I LOVE this video, practical kitchen wisdom. I’m a big fan of stocking up on meats in this way. I have an old deep freezer that refuses to die and I’m so grateful. That thing has served us WELL! I keep a stockpile of various sizes of freezer bags too. While my hubby was in the hospital I had my niece come by and help me cook up 10 lbs of ground turkey to freeze. It is so great to just grab what you need for a quick dinner! 😊👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽😊

+StarsReminiscent absolutely nothing against Jordan but I won’t be buying her cookbook anyways sadly! I’m in the UK for first (shipping would be a pretty penny) and I NEVER use cookbooks- I don’t own a single one. BUT i love following her recipes, which is why I want to see a full “what we eat in a week” type of video and how she uses her frozen stuff!

@lilygarner8463 4 года назад
+Lindsey Poyner yes and I love them! I’ve been keeping up with her cabin updates lately too (instant pot chicken, salsa verde etc) but what I always wanted to see from her and what she’s never done is a full week of recipes/meals for her family. Just because she shares her grocery haul for the week or however long and meal planning but we only see meals on specific days (or freezer meals), but not how the groceries turn into meals she cooks, if that makes sense. I really hope she does one (or something similar) soon.

Yes I have thought that too. Or a lot of RU-vidrs that I’ve been watching for a while, don’t even do their intro thing anymore they just start out with an intro of what that video is about and then dive into it. I really like that approach even better.

I'm so glad she made this vid. I do all these things already, but I do take a day or two out each month to cook meals/side dishes ahead and vacuum seal them. Later all I have to do is pull things out of the fridge and pop in the microwave. Or if I'm already cooking something I make a large amount to vacuum seal for later. People look at me like I'm crazy, but if they only knew how much time it saves. Plus, no matter what we want for dinner it's already ready. So if we want something different each I don't have to cook separate meals!

TIP!!!! If you do not own a vacuum sealer simply fill the sink with water and dip the half close zip-lock bagged item into the water being very careful to keep the open end above the water. The water pressure will push the air out and you can seal/zip it before lifting it out of the water. Make sure you dry the outside of the bags and mark them before putting into freezer so you don't created ice to stick the bags together!!!

Love these videos! As there's only two of us, I've found that we usually end up needing to stock up on meat about once a month and as we're in the big super market I usually get the big blocks of cheese/misc long shelf items and the canned stuff (25p for chopped tomatoes? Yes pls) I've started having my boyfriend come with me to help lug everything home (we're like a 10/15 minute walk from the shops but with groceries it's like 20 - 30!) And he's learnt all the basics mentioned here and graduated to planning the meals this week and I'm super proud of him! :) He usually does the cooking bc he's a lot better at it than me but having him plan it - so many more ideas for recipes! Like obv we have the "what do you want to eat this week?" Convo and there's usually a spag bol or chilli every week bc they're easy and we always have the stuff in but he's out here throwing in some meatballs and tacos and pies and I'm like 😍 variety 😍 but also I think he might be trying to impress me and tbh I'm HERE for it 💕

Great tips! At our local grocery they price meat, and sometimes cheeses and other perishables, that are getting close to the sell by date at $19.99 for 5 packages! I've gotten, roasts, steaks, pork chops etc but, as you pointed out, Check the original price too. In order to eliminate freezer burn I also wrap meat I'm freezing for a longish time in white freezer paper. It's just like what the butcher uses at our butcher shop. It comes in a roll (like aluminum foil etc) and Walmart sells it. Since I don't wrap as well as a butcher, I place my meat first in plastic zipper bags, squeeze out as much air as possible and wrap, tape and label it. It's saved me a lot of money by not ruining meat with freezer burn.

I’ve heard you mention the 100 dollars per person per month budget before but I’m glad you showed what you can get for 100 dollars and the exact prices on your meat. Food is bleeping cheap where you live! Even those before prices were great. That you can get food so cheap where you live plus the fact that your kids are little enough they must not eat much explains why your budget can be so low. Food is pricey here (while pay isn’t great). I could never get those deals and I basically have 7 adults in our house since my kids are teens. I was hoping to find ways to save money but I’ve always shelf cooked and always buy extra meat on the rare occasion it is on sale and we still spend around a grand a month.

I agree. The way meat is processed is disgusting and it upsets me so many people just buy it anyway. We need to support local and ethical if we are going to eat meat. Money talks. we as consumers have the power to change things.

@@paulaa.6833 If you feel that strongly, don't force ("I will make") your husband to do something you won't do. That's wrong! If you don't want to use it, donate it to someone who can choose for themselves, as well. If you feel that strongly, the value of the meat is not important. Give it away.

Great tips! Esp the advice to stock up little by little each trip. I’ve been trying to find a used or cheap freezer for a couple of years but everyone definitely jacked their prices up this year! Should’ve bit the bullet sooner! ... I’d love to see your pork recipes; I didn’t grow up eating it and am only now learning how to cook it well.

Can always almost submerge your freezer bag in water to force the air out and create a vacuum, then seal. It works the same

In July, I purchased 3 packs of center cut chops, and I purchased 4 packs of pork rib chops for 99 cents per pound at Rouses. I live in southwestern Louisiana. I have a chest freezer. Last week, I bought 12 cans of Van Camps Pork & Beans for 50 cents per can. The original price was 85 cents per can.

Thanks Jordan. A couple of things I’ve found are that fat- is much easier to trim off when the meat is still partially frozen. It’s not slimy and slippery and it’s much easier to get it off. Also “Ziploc” makes “Pint size” freezer bags which hold even smaller portions yet I find I can fit 1 pound of raw or cooked ground beef in them perfectly, and there’s hardly any air left and then you can seal it tight. Some stores don’t have them but I’ve always been able to find them at Walmart even though they don’t have as large of a supply has the quart and gallon size ones.

I am an avid watcher. Your ideas are so practical. I would suggest that when you are using freezer bags, before you fill them, turn down the opening. That way food doesn't get stuck in the tracks and makes it cleaner to seal.

I have always broken down large packs of meat into smaller ziploc bags. Growing up poor and a family of 6 and just my grandpa working my grandma could rub two pennies together and get a nickle. I hated breaking it down before but now that I have my own family it was an invaluable gift she taught me. Also, a friend told me a couple years back that if she already knows what she is going to plan for that protein (chicken for example) she seasons and marinades it when it goes in the bag so it seasons it when its freezing and when it thaws. I did this recently with curried chicken and it tasted so much more flavorful. Oh and before I forget,if I make lots of spaghetti sauce or a stew, etc I'll take the leftovers and freeze those so that all I have to do is thaw and reheat

One thing I like to share about getting fat off cooked ground meat. I put a plate down in the sink, and put a strainer over it. I dump the ground meat in the strainer and let the fat drip on to the plate. Once finished I move the plate and rinse ever so slightly with warm water. I put a paper towel down on the fat I just strained off to soak it up and toss it in the garbage or compost. I used to do this straight into the sink and skipped the plate until I found out how bad that is for your pipes. Just a tip I like to share.
