@BRSTV I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. You guys are so amazing and I’m so thankful you guys take the time to make these videos. I just installed an apex and a bunch of stuff and I was overwhelmed to say the least. Your videos have helped me more than you know. If I was in the US I’d support your business 100%. Thanks again.

I am using the 500W FINNEX heater and it’s the best heater I have ever bought so far, plus it’s not glass and has a heater guard, you do have to have a heater controller for it but who doesn’t use one on there reef tank?

If both the Neptune temp probe and the Hanna check temp both have an accuracy variance of +/- .05 degrees, which do you trust?
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 года назад
The Neptune Temperature probes are calibrated from the factory and shouldn't need user calibration in most cases. The Hanna Check Temp has an accuracy of +/- 0.5 degrees F, so it can be used to calibrate temperature probes/heaters pretty reliably.

Hi I have been cycling my 16 gallon tank for 2 weeks now and When I started my cycle I used dr Tim’s one and only along with live rock, live sand, and ROdi water from an already established reef tank. Anyways, I got my first 2 hermit crab yesterday since my water levels have been good for a week and there is some algae growing on my rocks and on my glass. However a friend told me that I can’t put anything into my tank until I have diatoms. Is this true?
@mikelee35
@mikelee35 3 года назад
100% not true.. as soon as your tank shows no ammonia you can start adding livestock... Nitrites don't hurt marine fish like they do freshwater fish
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 года назад
I would disagree that you can't add any fish until you have diatoms. The real fish killer in a new tank is ammonia. Nitrites are less toxic, but should also be zero before adding fish. As long as ammonia and nitrites are both zero and nitrates aren't sky high, you should be ready to add your first hardy fish.

I thought that we weren't supposed to use the Apex to directly control the heater so that it doesn't wear out the EB832 outlet relay?
@bower230
@bower230 3 года назад
I was going to ask the same thing. The problem I have with using the Apex as back up is my heater controller isn’t that accurate. Larger swings. Now I’m not sure which way is better..
@mjenk430
@mjenk430 3 года назад
Smock Knives Agreed! I’m going to try the BRS controller to see if it can keep a tighter window than the inkbird I am currently using. I don’t like the idea of switching 1200 watts of heater with the apex outlet. I’d rather burnout the contacts in a $50 controller than a $300 EB832.

Ryan and I debated this heavily between ourselves and with Terence. In the end, there are valid arguments to make about each approach and we could debate them until we turned blue, but for the sake of ease and clarity we discuss how Neptune has designed the Apex and heater setup around it being the primary temp control. I think there will be multiple opportunities to circle back to some of these topics that have differing opinions on setup and create an episode that shows the alternative, but to explain heater setup as simple and succinct as possible we opted to just cover the most popular way. -Randy

Bulk Reef Supply I completely understand, I am debating it internally as well. 😀 Thank you guys for all the valuable, concise, and easy to understand information that you put out!

@@mjenk430 With too tight a hysteresis there is more to worry about failing than just the relays. Any time you cycle power on a device, especially a device that heats up and cools down, you will cause premature wear and failure as you increase the number of cycles overall across time. Additionally, switching 1200w on a single EB832 should not be done as it exceeds the stated limit of each outlet. Furthermore, if you really need that much heat, something like the EB4 will be a much more cost effective option since even if you split those two heaters between two outlets, you have consumed 2/3 of the carrying capacity of the entire EB832 for just those two heaters. 2/3 of $300 = $200 whereas an EB4 is just $120 and one of the outlets can actually switch 12A.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the eb832's wattage limits.
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 года назад
The max load for the EB832 as whole is 15A. Each 120VAC outlet has a rated load capacity of 7 Amps.
@Bete_Noir
@Bete_Noir 2 года назад
My Apex will not allow me to set min/max a half degree apart. The closest it will permit is 1 1/2 degrees. E.g., 76.5 and 78. If I try to narrow that gap, it automatically changes the values on upload. What gives?
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 года назад
Hmmm...the smallest interval should be 0.1 degrees F. Feel free to shoot a message to our BRS customer service team or the Neptune Systems team and I'm sure we can help walk you through how to get this set the way you want.

Can I hook up 1 or 2 800watt finnex titanium heaters to apex?
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 года назад
The EB832 is capable of 15amps and 1500watts total, so you want to split those between two EB832's. We also recommend NEVER plugging a heating element directly into an Apex outlet. Instead make sure that the heaters either come with their own internal thermostat/control or you use something like an Inkbird or other controller to regulate the heater. Check out these Top 20 Heater Mistakes video we did for a more thorough explanation. :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3MdUGdgGwiw.html

Bulk Reef Supply thx. Yes, I have finnex controllers as well and plan to buy apex...and hook up the controllers to apex some day once it gets a bit cheaper. Thx for confirming that I will need two EB832s
@terencefugazzi5164
@terencefugazzi5164 3 года назад
@@syedammarrizvi4516 Another option to consider is using EB4 which are more cost effective. Also make sure that you absolutely need that 1600w of heat. More is not better when it comes to heaters. If you do not have a big tank, or a cold room, more watts can often mean that bad things just happen faster. :)

Terence Fugazzi tank is 450gallon Fowlr plus 75 gallon sump. What heater size you would recommend in a 68-70 degree living room? I have been thinking of buying Neptune apex but can’t justify it for a Fowlr. Tank manufacturers recommended two 800watt finnex with controllers that I have been using for 2plus yrs
@terencefugazzi5164
@terencefugazzi5164 3 года назад
@@syedammarrizvi4516 Many other variables than just tank size to determine. Everything from what your target temp will be to what surface is the sump sitting on to what are the other electronic components used in the tank (return pump, power heads, lighting, canopy, etc. I would think that if that is your ambient, 500w is probably enough unless you are planning to keep the tank at say 85 degrees. I personally like at least two heaters, i use four 250-300w heaters before I moved to using a heat exchanger. I had them laddered and the fourth was really just a backup. But, my 650g of water was using a super efficient return pump and my sump is in my crawlspace that gets down to 45-50 in the winter.
@mikelee35
@mikelee35 3 года назад
I disagree with using the apex to control your heater that specifically, it's cheaper to replace a heater that burns out from cycling on and off, vs replacing the apex powerbar from cycling on and off so much... ALSO in one if your previous videos Ryan agreed with using the heaters thermostat, not the apex outlet to control the heater.. use the apex as a backup in case it fails in the on position
@terencefugazzi5164
@terencefugazzi5164 3 года назад
Under normal customer use and circumstances there should be less concern for wearing out the outlet on the EB832. And, using the heater thermostat creates other issues - much to the surprise I am sure to many reefkeepers, my ideal set up is the Apex controlling a Jaeger heater with its electronic bits not submerged. The normal stuck on thermostat issues of these heaters will not be an issue and you get good hysteresis with the Apex. And, unlike the other kinds of heaters, the Jaeger is a great value and will not burst open underwater like the plastic and titanium ones often do. Only if one decides to put their heater hysteresis at say +/-0.1 would there be unnecessary cycling of the heater - which, by the way, is not good for the heating element on these other heaters either (rapid and often cooling and heating stresses the adhesives that hold them together)

Ink birds are not great at all, I use the bayite for my reef and ink birds for freshwater, the bayite is by far much better at controlling the temperature

Why spend the money for the apex when a temperature controller can do the job for $50 !?
@mikelee35
@mikelee35 3 года назад
Because the controller doesn't give you a notification while your on vacation if it breaks.. and I've had a controller putting voltage into a tank, a properly set up apex will alert you if excess voltage spikes
