BRS team, I must say you guys are a wealth of knowledge. I've learned so much from just listening to your videos starting from early days in reefing. I love the setup of your videos with the time stamps for the topics as I refer back to your videos to the exact place i'm working on. You've made a loyal customer out of me. Thank you for your content.

Another great video. I agree with all of them. I am a huge “control freak”. But you missed the number 1 mistake you see on the Apex Forum. Maybe not in how many people make this mistake, but that is is so over looked and can negate all monitoring and disaster prevention ..... Not putting a UPS on BOTH your apex AND your internet connection. If it can’t communicate when you need it most, it’s useless. You did point out a few Neptune issues and not really user issues and I agree. They got rid of the display unit and I had told Terrance years ago, “you need a damn light switch on the display unit” and way back then he was talking about getting rid of the display. This goes hand in hand with the breakout box issue you mentioned. Although I would put a big ground port on the breakout box. All of those switches come with two wires. But as far as the heater goes the old EB8 relays never burn out from a simple 300 watt (dual 150) heater. Telling customers to put a controller on their controller is foolish. Too many non Apex ready products. Now I need a heater controller? No. Build the product for control of common equipment. It’s getting to be like a home theater with 16 remotes.

Good advice with the UPS. I'm still in freshwater and just salt-curious at this point, but if you're gonna spend thousands on a reef tank a halfway-decent UPS is a drop in the bucket. I have a mid-size one in my study, mostly for my server but also for my workstation and network equipment, and I will definitely be adding a new one to the list for my eventual saltwater build. Most power outages are brief. You won't get through the bad ones without a generator but for 99% of them you will do well to have a battery to let you know what happened, what's going on, and whether anything didn't take kindly to the sudden power cut.

Great video with great tips. I've used the Apex for many years now and am very pleased. I think a lot of people tend to overthink it in the beginning and can get very overwhelmed quickly. The setup can be as easy or as complicated as you make it. I see people trying to reinvent the wheel with advanced coding sometimes when really it's not necessary and sometimes is as simple as following the task setup.

Just yesterday got a notice that my pH was crashing and it would have been hours before I caught it otherwise. Was a simple fix as a result. I WISH THEY WOULD SIMPLY EXPAND THE ALERT SYSTEM TO A LOW/MED/HIGH PRIORITY SO I CAN SIMPLY AND EASILY DECIDE WHAT'S AN URGENT ALARM. CURRENTLY IT'S ALL URGENT UNLESS I DO EXCESSIVE PROGRAMMING WITH VIRTUALLY SWITCHES THAT ARE HARD TO MONITOR AND TEST AND OPENS IT UP TO ERRORS. Pretty please 😊

Thank God I watched this as I have my heaters plugged directly into my Apex and they don't have their own temperature controllers, lucky I have only had my Apex for 4 months so the heaters have only turned on about 8 times since I got the Apex. I was using a Bayite temperature controller prior to getting the Apex, so I'll just set that up again with the heaters plugged into it then have the Bayite plugged into the Apex and have the Apex as a backup like you recommended should the heaters or the Bayite fail. Thanks guys, you saved me from potentially messing up my Apex EB8 energy bar.

I can't lie, it's an amazing device.. But when I opened the box the other day and started hooking things up I was kind of shocked that for $800 dollars they didn't include a holder for the probes.. Luckily I had some startboard laying around from the boat and an Xcarve, so I whipped something up......Apex, if you are reading this you're getting some pretty good competition with other companies making some really nice products so you'd better step it up a bit. The only reason I spent the extra money on your product is because I really like BRS as a company and you are what they currently sell..

I think hardwiring your apex to the internet should be the number 1 thing. I’ve seen so many less issues with the apex systems that are running a direct connection instead of a wireless connection. Especially if you have bad WiFi or a lot of interference

I would love to see videos on basic programming on the Apex. I have the EL and definitely don’t feel I am utilizing it to the fullest. I would love to get an alert when my return pump wattage drops significantly, but no idea how to add the code for that. Edit: just saw it in your video under the tasks function. How did I miss the task functions??? So now I don’t know where it adds the code for alerting me about the wattage.

So my heater is connected to my apex. My apex is being used as the thermostat. I’ve observed that it switches from off to on or on to off only 20-26 times per day that’s 7300-9500 times per year. Where does millions of times come from?

If 90% of people are missing 80% of the value, that’s a big indicator something is wrong with the design of the UI.
@PatrickJewellTheGreat
@PatrickJewellTheGreat 3 года назад
New Apex user here. Actually I think the UI is really polished. However, an Apex is not for the faint of heart when it comes to implementing the automation. They just need a comprehensive setup guide that takes you step-by-step, much like their Tasks function. This would be based more on the tank, “Do you have a skimmer?” Do you have a All-In-One tank? Then it would go through suggested profiles based on your hardware and modules. Or even suggest additional modules for redundancy. Firmware should update automatically when you add a module. I feel the Neptune Apex is 80% there to making it dummy proof. It’s definitely not dummy proof now. It’s not a automatic timer with pins. It take some thought to do this correctly.

Not necessarily. I think there plenty of tales (probably on r/rolledintotheshop) of people whose cars broke down and later admitting the check-engine light came on [at some point] and that it remained lit for months ahead of the failure. The check engine light. It means something isn't well. Short of having a light that announces the same in every language, how else could that be improved for UI? My mother has an iPhone. The platform is self renowned for being "easy to use" yet I'm know she hasn't used many of the capabilities made available through it. Is it a UI failure if someone doesn't use a device [for something it is capable of doing] but has no interest in doing it or doesn't understand the value of that use? I have neighbors that bought into smart irrigation controllers (like my Rachio). They have their systems start every day at the same time for the same duration rain, wind, or cold. At least Rachio tries to educate users as part of the setup, but what about people who don't read instructions or features and release notes? Is that a UI failure? Sometimes it is as simple as you don't know what you don't know.

Question for the BRS guys. I have my heater set up as you said, “the right way”. With the BRS heater controller as the primary (77.5-78.5)and the apex backing it up (77-79), but I am having an issue with my alarms and power monitoring. I have it set up so I gat an alarm when the heater is below 550 watts so I know if it dies but when the outlet is being powered and the BRS heater controller isn’t actively turning the heating element on, it sits at 0 watts. So I end up getting 20 alarms a day on my phone because the heater outlet is below the 550 watts while on. Is there a way to fix this so I can still monitor if my heater fails in the off position but I don’t have to have the apex as the primary heater controller with the outlet turning on and off 100 x a day? Thanks!

You could also plug in a couple of things, pumps/skimmers/etc, into a strip and then that into 1 outlet. That way you can still turn a lot of at once without wasting outlets. Just watch out with total power per outlet then.

I'm curious to know why people who have and have bought the ATK v2 have had extreme failures with the pump not working within a few months of having it, the same for the sensors not working as expected... I've seen a ton of complaints about this product... Are these problems do to manufacturing defects or a mistake by the buyer some how...

Thanks for the excellent video. There is a contradiction on what is said on this video as compared to what is said on the video that you link to at the end regarding ULM Apex programming. In this video you say that the heater itself should be the main on/off controller and that the Apex is the failsafe. In the other linked video you say the opposite. There, you clearly say that the Apex should control the on/off heater cycle and that the heater control itself should be the failsafe. Can you please clarify which way is correct.
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 года назад
Great catch Douglas! In all honesty we've become much smarter about heaters in this regard since we shot that ULM episode. The proper way to setup the heater with an Apex is absolutely using the heater's own thermostat and controller as the primary temp control and using the Apex outlet as a backup. Like we mention in the video, I would much rather have the $30 heater components fail from constant ON/OFF cycles rather than my $300 Apex Energy Bar.
