This week, I share about tips to stay awake during meditation. Are you falling asleep during meditation? Let me know in the comments below!

Thank you! Without knowing it was a good thing I have already experienced the deep breaths at the beginning of my meditations; I like also the suggestion of stretching. Regarding the walking meditations before watching your video I was paying attention to the sounds and things around me. Then I started paying attention to my feet and also the sound of my sneakers and I have realized they are all different!

Excellent! Try practicing in your daily activities. What you might notice are your habit energies as you do you house chores. I have learned much about myself in those simple daily activities.

Thank you for the tips. I tend to even fall asleep during self-inquiry meditation while using beads. I start dreaming I think. I am often tired due to my often rough work weeks.

It’s okay, we also need to recognize our need to rest when we are tired and then rest. It is wisdom. To recognize our experience and what we can do about it for our wellbeing.

Hello lakshmidevi, thank you for leaving your comment and question. I am going through something similar these days. I keep getting sick and not sleeping much so my practice is not as pleasant and consistent as it once was. All we can do is learning to be patient and kind to ourselves. We observe our challenges and those and the first lessons we can learn from applying meditation to our daily life. What are we struggling with and what are the antidotes? When you feel better, throughout the day or when you recover, you can practice some time here and there. That's what I do, when I feel a bit better during the day, I practice a little bit several times a day. A few minutes here and there because that's what I can do right now. When I fully recover, my practice will be a bit different, Remember that the real practice is throughout the day, it's your daily life, what you struggle with and how you can transform those struggles. Hope this helps. - Olivier

I find that sitting on a slightly uncomfortable chair helps me not fall asleep while meditating.

I appreciate your clear explanations in explaining the techniques of meditation. How can meditation help when one has several chronic illnesses and trouble with insomnia. Can meditation improve our sleep or promote sleep?
@PeacefulBreathing
@PeacefulBreathing 2 года назад
Hello Brenda, meditation can help in regards to insomnia definitively. Usually, insomnia is due to a state of restlessness, maybe some lingering anxiety that keeps one awake. What I can share in a short post is that meditation can help become aware of the root cause of insomnia, maybe a belief, and help the person let go of what is troubling them. Maybe it is also a lifestyle change that is also needed. Meditation is not only practiced on the cushion, it is something that we try to bring to our daily activities and at each moment of the day. In terms of chronic illnesses, meditation has also been very helpful. If you are interested in this topic, I recommend to check out the book called: "Full Catastrophe Living" by Jon Kabat Zinn. He created a Mindfulness program to treat patients with terminal illnesses and created a program called MBSR which is an 8-week program that teaches mindfulness meditation. I hope this helps, please let me know if you need anything else.

Hello Olivier, Thank you for taking the time to reply. Not long ago I started listening to the audio book versions of Jon Kabat-Zinn's books on meditation even before I discovered your videos. I have a masters degree in psychology and have been aware meditation, though never really examined it in detail. The mental and physical health benefits achieved through meditation described by Dr. Kabat Zinn were important for me to find out about because they are based on scientific studies. Up until then I was skeptical that meditation actually is effective. For many years I have had to live with several chronic illnesses and because of this I am searching for a method to deal with physical pain and the insomnia which it causes. Of course, what affects the body also affects the mind. It is a natural response to be anxious about physical pain. Much of human behavior centers around avoiding pain, whether physical or psychological. In listening to Jon Kabat Zinn's audio books on how to meditate, the scientific information was convincing, but I personally found that his way of guiding people through actually meditating did not "speak to me" personally. It seemed too complicated. Years before I had tried the practice of meditation and became frustrated. Meditation did not seem to "work for me". Therefore, I searched for an alternative guide on how to meditate and discovered your videos. As I said in my first comment to you, I appreciate the clear way that you explain the actual process of meditation as well as the philosophy and scientific information about this practice. I was skeptical of how being fully aware of my physical pain could actually help me deal with these pains. I take very little chemical pain medication since they have many side-effects. I prefer to use healthy, natural supportive methods. I have only recently attempted to use meditation and still must learn much about it. There are many who suffer from chronic illness, and it would be helpful if these individuals had more practical guidance on how to deal with their pain through meditation. Pain causes anxiety. Perhaps you may want to consider addressing this topic in one of your videos, many would benefit from it. I continue to enjoy your videos on meditation. @@PeacefulBreathing

@@brendamcdonald5954 Hello Brenda, I am happy to share and connect more on meditation and dealing with pain. I'd like to add some comments to what you shared. In the world of meditation, there are many teachers, each come with their own style, from experience, background ... My personal preference is Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. I like his soft, poetic but yet very concrete and simple style of practicing meditation. Here's the first talk I have listened from him ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ijnt-eXukwk.html and it changed my life and that's why today I share about meditation. One of his student who as an MD prior to becoming a buddhist nun wrote a book called: Mindfulness as Medicine: A Story of Healing Body and Spirit. I did not read it but I would bet it is a great read. A lot of the practice comes down to recognizing our experience, pleasant or unpleasant and observing how we relate to it. Do we cling to what we like, how attached we are to those things we desire and how much do we push away what is unpleasant. So dealing with physical pain, meditation helps to become aware of the physical pain and of the mental and emotional pain and learning to breathe with them and find some sense of acceptance and peace. I don't want to overload you with more resources but I'd point you to Tara Brach, a therapist with buddhist meditation training who wrote 3 books on dealing with her illness. I hope this journey, what you discover with meditation will bring you a sense of ease in your life and that you will soon be well. Always feel free to reach out if you have questions, I am more than happy to share what I have learned. This is the purpose of this channel, to provide meditation instructions simple and accessible. 🙏

@@PeacefulBreathing Hello Olivier, I just wanted to take the time to thank you for your reply. It was kind of you. I look forward to finding out more about the other sources of meditation information which you shared with me. I first found out about Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh in a book I read which discusses meditation for Christians. This refers to a book which he wrote called: Living Buddha, Living Christ. Living my Christian religion is part of my daily life, which includes being respectful, compassionate and kind to others. A philosophy which Master Thich Nhat Hanh also taught. Like you, I enjoy this teacher's gentle manner and the simple style of practicing meditation . . . a trait I also see in your teaching videos. Thank you for your well wishes for my health. I look forward to watching more of your videos on meditation.
