In this video I show how to build a splash guard out of aluminum for a gable end vent to stop wind driven rain or snow from getting into your attic. This allows the vent to function while stopping water from getting in.

I like the idea but this fixes one problem but causes another. You have essentially reduced the surface area of the gable vent by at least 75%. Attic ventilation should equal approximately 1 square foot of vent area for every 300 square feet of attic, so figure out roughly how many square feet the footprint of your attic is, and then divide by 300. However you have a great idea I think if you manufactured the same sheetmetal but added a 45 degree angle 📐 on the backside you could achieve the desired results.

I agree with you. However, I added ridge vents and intake baffles during this time to the attic as well so I have plenty of ventilation. If I wasn’t going to do that then I would have set them back at a 45 like you suggested. They were just easier to make this way. I think I mentioned this in the video.

@@HowtoHacks I'm learning about this now. Most research I find indicates you should NOT combine gable vents with ridge vents. This is why someone might have had your gable vents closed up with the Styrofoam that you mentioned.. if you google it, everything I find says the best system is soffit vents combined with ridge vents is the best system. A gable vent thrown into it actually causes suction and throws off the natural flow of the air from the soffit vent and the ridge vent.. I believe I need to close off my gable vents, add the baffle vents you mentioned to avoid insulation from preventing air flow from the soffit to the ridge vent.

here is the video I've found explaining that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CWkTyG8LAsI.html

@@mar4380 Yes this is the case. However the people who put the last asphalt roof on my house didn’t cut the roof decking back at the peak so there technically is was no ridge vent as it was blocked.

@@HowtoHacks so you installed ridge vents that don't actually function because the decking isn't cut and kept your Gable vents but impaired them?

I think this is a really good idea with a gable end fan as that’ll keep pulling air through the top but a static vent it’s effectively nullifying the vent. I’ve just fitted a 16” AC Infinity gable fan with Bluetooth controller and I might use this method to force it to pull hotter air at the top of the attic space and provide some extra water ingress protection.

I think you have a good solution here.

I like the fix, but will enough air flow through the attic now?
@HowtoHacks
@HowtoHacks 4 года назад
It probably does slow air flow some. I was in my attic recently to check it actually. It was 90 degrees outside and I could feel the air flowing through and it seemed about normal (however I didn’t take a temperature reading). It all depends on what other types of ventilation you have (ridge vents, soffit vents, can vents). If you’re worried about airflow you can make the box extend out from the vent farther which would make the opening bigger at the top.

Might there be any solutions for triangular-shaped gables?

This will work for that as well.

Theoretically a good idea but I have an attic crawl space. I noticed prior water seepage in your video. Was there mold?
@HowtoHacks

No mold. I I inspected very closely too.

So to keep the water out you blocked the vent

Open at the top to let air in and out. This old house has a segment on this as well.

I like the idea but you did not show how it breathes , I don’t you where going to set it back on a 45 degree angle to allow air but yet keep out the wAter I have a whole house fan and a 40 by 30 wooden louver that lets water in Can you help me with that? You seem good at this stuff

Watch the video again. The air flows in and out through the top of the box as it’s open. You can angle it back if you want. It’s just easier to fabricate as a box. The bottom of the box does have a slight angle to it so water will drain out. I made mine with aluminum coil stock but there’s many different ways to build this. You can build it out of plywood and line the plywood with aluminum as your vent is pretty big.

Great idea, but the video is so dark, can't see the details.

Yeah I know. It’s hard to film in an attic.

have fun with the mold in your attic because you just restricted the air flow of the vent.
@HowtoHacks
@HowtoHacks 3 года назад
That is something to consider. However, these vents were completely blocked off since the house was built so this is more airflow then there was before.

I have done very similar with Woodglut designs.
