I gambled excessively for about 13 years and lost tens of thousands of dollars. However, money was just a small and not the most important part of my losses. Basically speaking, gambling has stolen my youth, my most precious dreams, and created problems for the rest of my life. And all this started just from a single innocent bet.
During my recovery I read, collected and summarized a vast amount of related information on this matter. It often comes to my mind that if I had had this knowledge before, if somebody had approached me with it between my relapses, if somebody had given me some care and understanding, I could have started my recovery long time ago, and wouldn’t have experienced all the devastating consequences…

Such a horrible feeling to blow your paycheck within 2 - 3 hours of getting it. Driving home with tears in your eyes and wondering how in the hell am I gonna pay for gas/groceries the next 13 days? Loans? Credit cards? Pawn shop? All terrible choices 😢

One time I won $800 at the casino. I knew I should go home. However I told myself " hey let me play just $100 of this. Who knows, maybe I'll turn a good night into a great night. If I lose, who cares, I can then leave with a really good $700. However after losing the $100, now I say to myself " ehhh I couldddd try just $100 more. If I lose that I'll leave with that remaining $600. Still a heckuva day right? " Well next thing I know I'm down to $300 and my thought process changes to " omg I can't leave with a measley $300 when I had a really nice $800 three hours ago!!! I absolutely HAVE to get that $500 back!!! Then I'll be back to $800 and THIS TIME I'll leave ( supposedly ) " Down to $200, down to $100, down to $20. Need gas but say screw it, down to $0. Now I want to puke and/or kick myself in the nuts. Mentally exhausted, stressed out, sickening feeling as I have a walk of shame to my car 😢😭😡🤬🤮

All or nothing, one can't dabble in gambling it is not resolute, one has to be completely removed from the addiction, which means consciously choosing to commit to eradicating the habit from one's lifestyle completely, if we convince ourselves to partake in gambling the outcome of financial loss and suffering will have wind to continue. Ironically the easiest way to uproot the problem is to accept the habit is no longer in your life so by letting go of the temptations involved with the habit. This is my humble opinion.

I also do not believe in controlled gambling. Because if the person continues to gamble, it means that they will be thinking about gambling most of the time. And that means no life, no friends, no normal family and other relationships. The only way, in my humble opinion, is to quit for good. But quiting is just the first step, then, you need to dig deeper into yourself (alone or with psychologist) and look for the reasons, for the roots why you gamble, what keeps you gambling. And then, little by little, one by one, you need to eliminate those reasons.

Inspirational!!!!! I quit for a couple years... Now im back in it since something like 3 months, not even sure how or why, at the moment is going pretty well (even though not enough globally considered), so now I'm in the phase where I know I should leave since happened to me in the past to come from profit to loss, but it's though bro ..

I had a online gambling problem for many years and i signed up to gamstop which i think is uk based, that automatically banned me from all online gambling sites, its helped a great deal with my mindset, you can also go into gambling shops and ban yourself, its hard but its a massive step to recovery and will improve your mental health greatly, i banned myself on December 14th 2018 and haven't had a bet since, i still think about it but i also see how much more money i now have and how much my anxiety has improved, if anyone needs any advice or just to talk things through i will help you as best i can, good luck

I wonder if anyone is keen to open a chat group where we can openly share our experiences and tips on a regular basis Perhaps a monthly Zoom meeting or something like that Oh just to be clear I'm talking about our struggles and how we keep the betting time to a bare minimum, and NOT the strategies Of course its best if we're able to completely stop, but i believe I speak for most of us to say thats next to impossible and would be a miracle I have lost about 14k over 5 years since I first started.

I am granted to be living in a controlled mind unlike friends of mine. I think one thing that sets me aside would be the mental control. Now to quit it is true it takes others and stories and your own beginning to make that change. And IT IS TRUE you can change a bad habbit in month if not 2 if not 3 and surely in a year.

I've excluded from sites and limited my access to funds severely. I've also shifted my eyes and heard to stocks, crypto, and other financial advice. Granted, it's still technically gamling, and im aware of that. As long as you don't make future bets, "calls" and indecisive trades.

Easy way to stop gambling 1) take up a hobby that doesn't involve gambling like fishing etc 2) do not have extra money at any one time except for ur daily expenses.

Uhhh... If everything was that easy... :) To compare fishing with gambling?.. It is the same as to compare a cat and a lion :) Also, not having extra money can help you for a while, for the first weeks, months, but sooner or later you will have to deal with larger sums of money in your life... There is no one answer, method, pill to stop gambling. Stopping gambling is a complex thing, you need to change a huge number of things in you and your environment. And this is possible to do. What helps me a lot is having a dream, a goal that motivates me a lot, and it makes me stronger, gives me armor when I need it.

Hello Warren, I guess you know that such businesses do not bother about other people's problems. They just want to make more money. The same is with casinos - they just want your money, they do not care about the consequences that you might have. Credits, casinos are mainly amoral business and controlled by mainly amoral people. So, be careful. Better do other things than gambling. :) Why to continue flushing your money and life down the toilet?

@@WarrentheGunner Hello. Do you still think that you can win? I mean if you gamble. Because I managed to prove to myself that winning is not possible, and it helps me a lot. Cravings do not come anymore. Some thoughts, yes, but I reject them easily now. By telling to myself: "Do you really want to lose it all?". I am talking about the long-term winning. They are not possible. You should try to learn more about it. What type of gambling did you use?

@@gamblerinrecovery To be honest my friend , I would only do slot at 20p or 40p and spin (not a big issue) and football bets for £5 max from time to time.. but it's there were the greed comes in.. if I won big (from the stakes) I would go big or go home so to speak on roulette or blackjack staking between £25 to £500 a hand and it goes up fast or in the end goes down fast.

When I was a child, my dad ( gambling addict ) took me and my brothers to casinos, bingo halls, etc. We had to stand outside of the rope, where the gambling machines were. At bingo, he even let me dob the cards as a 10 - 11 year old. It was a different time back then and I think he knew the owner. So they let me do that. Anyway, putting a naive, impressionable, easily manipulated child in that environment is hideous. Two of us three brothers became massive gambling addicts, as soon as we were of age. Not a coincidence obviously. I have a ton of debt right now and it makes me sick. Wish he had waited for mom to come home from work, then go gamble by himself. Leave us kids out of it. What a horrible addiction. Absolutely financial obliterating, stressful, depressing, life destroying illness 😭

I have a similar story with my alcoholic builder father letting his builder mates ,use me to run to bookies age 16 obviously it got me into it ,and though have daughters and grandaughters we are now trying to get closer ,and stop gambling anymore I have kept away from it since pandemic but like many I have many horror stories ,from the life it destroyed over the years ,it's just pure misery good luck to any trying to get out of it .

Hello, I am very glad to hear that. :) I am thinking to continue making videos once I come back home to Lithuania in April. Currently I am working in Holland, saving money for my future life projects. Life continues, the show must go on. By the way, you could also make some video, tell about your recovery process, feelings, life plans, perspectives, etc. This sharing-and-helping-others activity could also improve your resistance to gambling. Such sincerity in your video! I had a problem with instant scratch tickets at the local convenience stores and grocery stores. I eventually gave up hope that I would ever win a prize of any significance. So I stopped buying them and started saving my money each month. It has been 2 or 3 years since I bought my last scratch ticket. Watching videos about the perils of gambling on RU-vid is all that I need to remind me to never throw away my money again. Gambling lowers many areas of personal wellness including mental health and financial health.

During that time money was easy to earn and I can afford to gamble, but too excessively until I got into trouble with loan sharks. Every problem I face was link to my slot playing. The slot machine is a BIG SHAM in Malaysia and that is illegal except in casino. True to my words, I am a reformed ex-gambler. If I will to gamble again , I know I must have an inexhausable bank balance, and bet very big(only in casino) .this time play to WIN. NEVER! NEVER! BE GREEDY! Anyway I do not have the urge to gamble again, I watch MG slot and Raja jackpot during this lockdown(covid 19)

@@kokteonggan7499 Dear, thank you for your response. Do not feel offended by my words, but I see a huge flaw in your thinking. You still believe that you can win, and this is a big problem. Because the reality is that you cannot win in a long run. No matter how you gamble, what strategy you use. Especially, if we are talking about slots. Slots are designed in the way that makes you think you have control over it, but in reality you have no control whatsoever. It is just a matter of time when you lose all your money again. If you really want to recover and have a happy life, you must stop any sort of gambling. And make other steps to build a happy life.

Anyway even I want to gamble again, I don't have the resources any more. Now I watch the high roller, MG slot NG slot having their fun. I had and many. But the problem is that after winning you will never quit :) You will continue because you won! And when we lose, we continue because we want to get our money back :) So, it is a never-ending story. You must just quit ASAP. Otherwise you will encounter bigger and bigger problems with the time... Financial, relationship, self-confidence, etc. Quit today! I honestly recommend it to you...

@@petep2678 Hello, Pete. I would suggest this book first. Easy to read and understand. 'Overcoming compulsive gambling: a self-help guide using cognitive behavioural techniques. Blaszczynski, A. 2010.' Try to look for it on amazon.com A used one can cost a few dollars or so. I bought it from there. If you do not get this particular edition, get another one, no big difference. The main things are the same. Also, while you awaiting for the book, you could go on www.problemgambling.ca - this is probably the best online source. I hope it helps to you. After reading a few books, I started to realize what a disease I came across, and now feel it easier to overcome my craving for gambling. It is not the end of the world if you slip, and gamble a few times, most important is that you understand that you are sick, what kind of sickness it is, and what steps to take to overcome it.

Hello. it is similar to cancer. You have it for the rest of or life, but you can live with it, you can pause/freeze it. But is is always here round the corner waiting for you... :) Despite this, you can live very happily for many years, just need to stop gambling now...

In my opinion, the best thing that you could do now is change the environment, and start reading related books. I can give you some links, some info. But you need to go away from your current environment for at least a week or so. To another town, city, country. Currently I am in Colombia, thinking to stay here for a long time. The local climate, people and the way of life suits me very well. I have not gambled for years now, I changed my life for better. Now I am just doing what I always wanted to do - to travel, meet interesting people, try some business ideas. This keeps me motivated and wanting to live long long life. Do you have any chance to join me in Colombia? :)

Try reading gambling problem related books. GA is just one of the options, and in my case it was not the best. GA did not work for me. But after I read a few books my recovery became more viable. The problem with GA is that they usually hold old fashioned beliefs, and do not have much of true knowledge about the addiction. For example, counting days does not make sense to me. I do not count them at all. Because when you think about days being free from gambling, you concentrate on gambling. And in my case the idea is to keep busy, to indulge in other rewarding activities so that you do not think about gambling at all. I hope you understood me :)
