Swathi writes, "I’ve wanted to write about dealing with motion sickness for nearly two years.
But so far, my tolerance for mountain roads has been poor. My way of dealing with it has been to pop a pill, sleep in whosoevers lap is available and hope for the best. Throwing up just 2 times was an achievement of sorts.
But not anymore.
I came by road from Haldwani to Lohajung last weekend. In fact, I’m writing to you from Lohajung. (The mountains send their love to you!)
I had a very pleasant 11-hour journey to get here. I didn’t so much as feel a heavy head. Or an uneasy stomach. All this despite an old lady in my car retching her guts out every few minutes! (The sound of someone else belching always sends bile rushing up my throat.)
I’ve been thrilled to bits about having had a vomit-free drive. But it has taken me some time to learn how to be vomit-free. Which is what this email is all about.
I’m going to give you some tips that I have learnt from experience. They may help you or a friend of yours perhaps, who suffers from motion sickness.
I’ll get straight to the tips."
In this video, she shares 7 tips to avoid / prevent motion sickness especially while driving on mountain roads.

I had studied in the hills and it was a common thing for me. What I did was always carry a poly bag so that I don't puke on others. Secondly, I used to carry some lemon and Ajwain. The smell of lemon was a savior that failed only few times. Chewing Ajwain did the rest. And as you said, even I avoided Avomine tabs. And the last thing, you should avoid smelling fuel and smoke as it is like a trigger.

Happened to me once. I was traveling in a Tata Sumo with friends with an empty stomach. And then I had motion sickness. I realized I was talking too much. The moment I stopped talking I felt better. 😀

One extra tip that worked really well for me: Keep a small amount of instant coffee handy and smell it frequently.

Eyes always on the road for sure. Don't look inside the vehicle or turn around to talk to other people in the vehicle. Front seat also for sure.. that too in a vehicle with higher ground clearance like Bolero, Tata Sumo, Innova makes a lot of difference. I've always taken the front seat in sedans during mountain drives previously but still experienced motion sickness. However, this summer when we drove from Dehradun to Raithal, i sat front seat in a Bolero and to my surprise i enjoyed the entire drive with no feeling of motion sickness!!! It was indeed such a pleasant surprise because motion sickness has always been the only thing that has stopped me from planning longer trips in the Himalayas...

I have spent arounf 70% of my life in mountains, and I struggle a lot with motion sickness. I always sit in front seat and focus on road but none of it really works for me. I have tried a lot of things, some of the things that work for me are medicine, travel empty stomach don't eat anything atleast 8 hours before travelling (when i am empty i still puke water, so not that useful), take breaks every 30-45 min get out of car and walk/strech, and the best one is drive a bike, this is the best one that works for me. And some of the worst trigger for me are fuel and smoke smell, milk tea, extreme weather, frequent change in altitude

Thanks a lot. Not sure on this and didn't get a chance to try it out, but i heard closing one ear (like using a ear plug) also helps.

Stemetil MD tab also works great. You can keep sipping on coffee if you dont want to get knocked out. The medicine will do it’s job yet will keep you up. Keep a small cloth or a potli of sorts which has a cotton ball soaked in Eucalyptus oil. Keep smelling it. Works wonders. Keep a laung (clove) in your mouth, that helps too. Listen to some podcasts or songs to keep you distracted.

I think all the points are covered and it does absolutely work. I does almost all/most of them for every car/bus travel. Though Avomine is suggested as last resort I take it atleast half an hour before the travel. when the travel time is going to be more than 2 hours.

In addition to it, keep some lemon or orange. Basically citrus fruit or candy. Have it or if possible smell lemon or orange. It will make you feel better.

I agree with most of what she said, however, after many years of traveling around the world I have found, for me at least, it is much better to eat a very good meal as close to possible before riding in a car or airplane. I also thought for years it was better to not eat as much but happily discovered it is quite the opposite, at least for me.

Travel more to mountains not as tourist , not as traveller but just plan a trip once a year and try to pick up the garbage peopel drop there. This way you will get used to of travelling in hilly terrain and you will make them a better place for others. Last year i went to chitkul and kalpa stayed there for 4-5 days and tried to clean the river side area from plastic bottles and disposables. This year did the same thing in Binsar and kasar devi

Some of the tactics I employ 1. Travel in a vehicle where the seat faces forward, and not backward or sideways. 2. This ones not for everyone. Sit in the middle (opposite of having window seats). This helps to reduce bodyroll especially while travelling in high ground clearance vehicles and on zig zag roads. Keeping low centre of gravity helps. 3. Do not travel empty stomach. Do not have food items which were stale, or might cause issues like acidity, gas formation. 4. Keep talking, asking, answering..keep a good conversation going on. Don't read books, texts or browse mobile. 5. If vehicle takes a break, leave your seat, go outside and sit on the ground. Butt on the ground! Transfer the toll taken by your body to the ground. 6. I sometimes used Avomine. 7. Having extremely sour food item in little pieces (like lemon). Helps to arrest vomiting. But its temporary. Last option!

In many of my travel experiences, I felt motion sickness. To avoid it, 1). Have a light meal with a cup of tea. 2). Always book the front seat. 3). Should talk with the people. 4). Listen to the music. Those things help me far better than any other. For an emergency, you should have an Avomine tablet with you.

I just travelled from shimla to kalka. And mountain sickness is very bad. It's been 4 hour I got off from the bus and still fell really that world around me is moving similarly like when I was in bus. It's does not go easily. I tried sleeping for first 1 hour. Sleeping helps but it doesnot stops the mountain sickness. Because I beleive the fluids in your ear is anyway moving. But if open my eyes then mountain sickness is 50% more difficult to Handel than closed eyes. Co passenger sitting next to me also felt motion sickness. He was asking when will bus get to the plain area it's round and round. I really want this mountain sickness to end. I would my worst part of traveling to shimla was this mountain sickness. My advice : Tatti Jakar hi behtna bus ya car mein. If your intestine has food and making gas and your not able to use toilet for some reason then your sickness will also be more difficult to Handel. In my case i was travelling in bus. I wanted to poop. But we know no toilets in BUS. Mountain sickness. I was not asking driver to stop the bus because of social pressure and what will he think and where will I go in middle of highway??? I tried to hold for as long as possible. Merko laga ek level ke baad to chaie road or hi kuya na krni pade I will do it. I will borrow water from somebody. This situation happened with me. Only my mom and brother knows. I will say special instructions should be given to bus to help passengers in such situations.

Hi Vinay, We don’t organise this trek in July. July-August is the peak monsoon season in Uttarakhand. The constant downpours make sections of the trail prone to landslides and rockfalls. The trek becomes a risky proposition to undertake. The best seasons to do this trek are Summer and Autumn. You can read more about it here : indiahikes.com/gaumukh-tapovan#KYT

All tips are 💯% correct. Let me add 1 more to the list. Keep a strong flavoured candy in your mouth (peppermint or sour candies work best). The strong flavour distracts the brain & steers focus away from nausea. But remember, whatever strong flavour you choose, it has to be something you like. For example, ginger though strong, will not work if you don't enjoy it.

You forgot one thing and that is to carry ample number of plastic/polyethylene packets to throw up in whenever you want to. Usually, the sumo drivers in Nepal give their travellers these packets right at the start of the journey itself to throw up in and the buses and tempo travellers overthere also keep a small bucket among the passengers for them to vomit into. The used packet with vomit in it can then be tied up to prevent the contents in it from spilling out and then discarded properly later on. (But ofcourse most people don't care about that and fling that packet on the road side as soon as they are done with using it). Apart from that eating less and having the vomiting tablet prior to the journey is a must to avoid motion sickness. Also, as you've said, as a general thumb rule, look only straight forward out of the front windshield without looking left, right or even down. And if possible, ask the driver to drive a bit slow and less rashly.
