I’ve never felt like I had “permission” to stop. The rumination just feels automatic, and before I know it I’m in a hole. Thank you 😭
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy 3 года назад
Yes, it can feel very automatic. Try to catch yourself doing it, and practice stopping. It takes practice to notice when you start ruminating and to notice when you have an urge to do it, and to learn that you can stop. It is a process of learning how to do this.

Hi Paige what if the rumination is around something that is bad. So say a noise neighbour? But you know it is still obsessive as you are thinking about it for. Morning till night and you have had obsessive thoughts about other things in the past. It's hard to stop thinking about a life situation that is bad.

That is the problem with rumination, is that you get caught up in it. Realizing that is what you are doing and making a decision to stop is very powerful. It really helps to take a step back from yourself.

When I ruminate, I don't think I want to stop because in that moment I HAVE to solve the "problem". I HAVE to be in control. The idea of trying to stop it actually raises my anxiety.

Wow this is the first video where I feel like I'm actually getting some sound advice on how to deal with my anxiety and rumination. My problem is me trying to fight my thoughts and now I'm realizing that's what's actually making things worse. This will be a process but I know that I will eventually be able to fully handle this. I just have to remember that I control my thoughts they don't control me.

Hi Paige, I’ve only just come across your videos and I have to say I’ve learnt more in the last couple of hours than I have in over 30 years suffering with severe OCD. My case has been a little unique over the years to the point where the medical profession weren’t sure how to help. It came out when I was 17/18, I’m now 51. In the early days it was the typical compulsions of rituals and hand washing. In my twenties it morphed itself into harming thoughts of other people. Exposure therapy back then did help to a point but it was never explained exactly how the brain works. When I was 30 my eldest daughter was born and when leaving the hospital I had an overwhelming fear that I’d somehow swapped my baby daughter with another baby! You can imagine how distressing this was and the next 2 years were absolutely awful. Every day I was having thoughts or convinced myself I’d swapped her for another baby if we were out. If things in the house weren’t the same the next morning after sleeping, for example, if my then wife (she left us in 2013 and I brought my two daughters up as they were with me full time) had moved something in the house I’d convince myself that it was proof that I’d been out in the night and swapped her. At first I was under a postnatal depression psychiatrist who basically told my family I would never get better and put me on a cocktail of medication. I was then moved to another psychiatrist when the previous one left and she took one look at the medication and said I shouldn’t be on half of these. With her help and a psychiatric nurse we found that sertraline along with CBT helped. My youngest daughter came along and with the CBT technique of letting my anxiety ride things weren’t as bad with her. Moving on from those years I kind of managed the OCD with a couple of little rituals here and there but generally had it under control. Recently I’ve had lots of trauma in my life. I lost my mum 18 months ago, moved house, relationship break up and lost my father last month. I’ve been going downhill for the last year as after watching my mum being bed bound for a few years deteriorating and once she died then watching my father who was then bed bound too with Alzheimer’s go down hill I didn’t have any time to process all of the stresses in my life. I’m currently waiting for cognitive therapy to start but seeing your videos I can honestly say that how you explain the thought process and exactly what happens to the brain through exposure therapy that everything makes a lot more sense. I thank you for making these videos and I’ve already shared them with other people. Best wishes from the UK and thank you once again

I love those Videos, thanks so much for them Dear Paige. By the way, before I heard this concept of a math problem, I already thought about it myself, since my Mother, when I was young, was compelled to resolve any math problem that I brought from the school, it bothered her so much (more than myself) and at the end of the day, when she succeded, she felt so proud and at peace. She loves counting and resolving mathematical issues, and OCD/ruminations feel to me like the sufferer tries to achieve this inner peace at the end from resolving a rumination, which is a neverending story. So- yes some of us can stop trying to resolve a mathematical problems without much effort, but some are such perfectionists it's hard to just forget and give up. It would be harder for a Mathematician perfectionist to give up such OCD themed issues (for example if he didn't feel relaxed all day long because he couldn't resolve something ) than for a usual person I think :)

Thank you Dr.Pradko as always ! It is truly a blessing to have you in my life. I have been watching your videos for the past weeks and they helped me so much. I have experienced rumination and pure O for almost 10 years, and sometimes it is just so hard to stop ruminating about my compulsive thought because I keep getting the feeling “what if I get it wrong and bad things happen because of my negligence ? “ Lately I have come up with a coping mechanism that I would refer to as “when someone points a gun to your head “ method. If I ruminate about a certain problem, I would ask myself - if someone points a gun at my head and asks me to answer the question that I am ruminating about in under two second (i.e. did I actually lock the door? Did I hurt someone ? etc ), what would be my answer. Surprisingly this method kind of solved my rumination problem ! If you don’t mind me asking Dr Pradko, would you recommend that I keep using this as my way of coping with rumination? Or does this count as reassurance-seeking and should be avoided (I am worried that my coping mechanisms sometimes are actually reassurance-seeking behaviors. ) Thank you so much !!!
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy 2 года назад
Hi Yuying. Believe it or not, your method is actually a method discussed in a book by Jonathan Grayson called Freedom from OCD. But, he uses the method with the question about answering correctly your own “what if” question. Surprisingly similar to your method. Although, I can see how it might become compulsion. I advise people to hold the thought they are ruminating about in the background (like background noise) and then shifting their attention to something they were doing before the rumination began. It is basically my I. A.M. technique applied to rumination.

Thank you as always. The instruction of Dr. Greenberg was very helpful, but I've also been using your I.A.M. technique. That has been helping me, too, especially the mindfulness step. I go through those 3 steps when I'm dealing with intrusive thoughts and the rumination on them, and the "connect with the moment" step actually tends to comfort me the most, kind of squashing the thoughts. It depends on the severity, of course. Thanks, again :)

You saying the part about ruminating about ruminating really helped me because as I was watching this video, I started to ruminate about a thought that I was dealing with before I clicked on this video and while watching I was thinking about why I should or shouldn’t listen to the advice, even though I was wanting to listen so Thank you so much!! I pray that God blesses you for helping people and everyone you work with or no that does the same and anybody going through this or any mental illness🤟🤟 without God‘s peace, I would not be able to apply any of this tomy life. truly, there is hope, I ask this in Jesus Christ Holy name Philippians chapter 4 NKJV “6Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Paige, wow, that’s genius that you point out in pure-o about the two competing thoughts (concepts) “if I have this fearful thought and what if it’s true, and I don’t believe it’s true, or that thought it is false, but I believe it’s true”. That’s it! If people with ocd can deal with these concepts we would all get better!

I've only recently figured out I had Pure O, I didn't even realize this sub-type of OCD existed for most of my life, so I've been trying to learn even more. And watching this video made me realize something. My biggest 'obsession' in my Pure O, is the obsession with needing to come to a conclusion. Thinking about how I have to figure things out now. Figure out right now why I would have such and such intrusive thought, what that means for me as a person. Concrete answers. But there are none. I have to try to learn to accept that sometimes, thoughts are just thoughts and don't mean anything about me. That sounds like sound logic, but I know it'll be a fight to fully accept that, mental illness is harder to sway with logic than people who don't struggle with it tend to realize. I'm already working with my therapist on other mental issues I have, but I think I should definitely bring all this up with her. Thank you for making this video.
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy Год назад
Hi Riley. You now have a good understanding of what you have been experiencing. This need to come to a conclusion is a type of OCD that is sometimes mixed with completeness and perfectionism. It can be a mixture of OCD and OCPD (Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder). It sounds like your main compulsion is rumination. You will have to leave things incomplete, inconclusive and imperfect. Because no matter how hard you try, they cannot be figured out with complete certainty. I am glad you have a better understanding. What is more irritating is , when you have job in hand and when you get caught up in rumination . Stress of not doing job is building up aswell plus rumination is becoming stronger by spending too much time in it. Stress and pending work makes you more worse even that stress simply adds up to the stack of the rumination . But good thing is that actually work in hamd also helps you to slowly come out of rumination if you try refocusing into it. Its not easy to refocus but ya slowly detaching and reattaching with your daily work helps.
@zzzz546

Weird thing i see is same thing like stress makes you feel worse and same thing hekps you to refocus also . So its mainly on our hand how we uses everything . Even anxiety fear negative thoughts are suppose to help us in certain extent when we have ability to neglect 99percent of extra stuffs it bombards.

@@PaigePradkoTherapy Thanks Paige but also i suffer from some confusions and conflicts whoch leads to rumination , i know 90 percent of is rumination but 10 percent which sounds like a real problem . In that 10 percent definetly 5 percent is cognitive distortions like black,white thinking and taking too much of literal meaning of the statements and sense of perfectionism on the cure . I have below conflict as of now , if possible help me to throw light on how i can come over ,
@zzzz546
@zzzz546 2 года назад
Hi, I know its long post but really need your expertise because i am at huge conflict sometimes the approach needs to be followed. What i am following is as below: FYI that i am using CBT approach(4R steps ,where i disregard content of the thought with Reattribure and Relabel ) and then Refocus ( which is now easy as Relabeling helps to look ocd thoughts as ocd thoughts ) medication and healthy life style and keeping busy in work which helped me to feel much better over the years , but may be 70 to 80 percent better . But when question comes on 100 percent and what happens if i leave medicine ? Am i ok to this extent with the help of medication ? then thinks about complete cure that what experts say like ERP is the gold standard . But i had bad experience back few years when i had try that. But now my mind forces me to consider that ? I have some question on ERP: It suggests to face fears , but eventhough ocd thoughts are stemmed from fear but later its just became the egodystonic thoughts you feel against your values or just mind tricking you to make you discomfort or irritates you. Also considering on the fears , regarding facing them and what happens with that? because fear is endless if you dig into it. How normal ppl handle fear ,they get some amount of fear and they just neglect it to certain extent or switch gears . Why cant we do that ?. Either our fear is irrationaly amplified version OR we lack neglecting part OR filtering to switch the gears OR self confidence OR some amount of belief that helps to over come the doubt and the negative thoughts. Example , before going to exam even though i might be prepared for 80percent of the syllabus and when negative thoughts say also huge fear that you get all remaining 20 percent in the exam , but having even a pseudo confidence that chances of remaining 20 percent to come in the exam is very less and better to stay optimistic helps .While what i understand from ERP approach is stating "ya i may get 20 percent of what i left in the syallabus , what ls the deal ? I may fail the exam ? ". What you are having already high anxiety and that leads to more negativity as we are not talking that in neutral perspective , we have been already stressed and negatively biased and it fuels into more of anxiety. It is just an example there are more scenarios with my themes like any bad happens to any family members , and bad disgusting thoughts on god and performance anxiety. Because fear is always going to feel you fearful. Then your mind keeps on dwelling over fear and you might get sad and feel depressed also. Like for normal ppl ,they say if you think negative you feel negative . Its like feeling fearful is always expecting negative outcome . So your nature becomes like that . I do not understand logic of ERP here . Its asking you to be in a negative pit or cognitive misunderstanding or stay with irrational belief ?. Every time response is fear and ERP says to do Response prevention but here Response is fear , then where is response prevention?. So that means we need to accept cognitve distortions as true ? I actually got more bad following this stupid classic ERP. Its like ERP is asking to enter Rabbit hole , stay there , come out, but get the point we have ocd anxiety , its keeps digging the hole with fear and rumination . Then you still go into groove, rather than staying on the ground . I really faced this , what kind of approach i need fo follow, where i am going wrong . May be ERP is saying just go into the hole and come back without digging into it just stay there, its ok if you feel discomfort. But what about content of the thought like there is mud in the whole it gets stuck to you . Its feels more worst as you cannot really seperate the content of the thiught and fear because they are so glued. May be we need to handle first with proper cognition to seperate them ? Then stop rumination which keeps digging the whole ? . I mean if ERP is done without handling these can cause more harm than better. Because i know ERP is difficult but heard it leads to you better but i only felt more misery . Then everybody talks its a golden standard and i feel i dont have enough guts to handle it and force myself to try . Its a conflict , its like you dont go near fire because you might have already burnt and learnt , but there is a unwilling force to fall into it in the name of theraphy. May be its even like this , ERP is actually is like peeled Apple and i am confusing it with peeled Potato which looks same and my ocd tricking me to think potato as apple ?"but when i read about ERP , it says we initially feel bad or worst but how i know is this really ERP or my borderline ( not typical but sounds real problem than old irrational patterns ) ocd tricking me in the name of ERP ?

However as you suggest to let the thought be and not engage with it... Unfortunately such thoughts get stuck in my mind and the associated anxiety doesnt subside even after weeks no matter how much i distract myself by doing other work .. What to do in that case doc?

There is a form of ERP called imaginal exposures. One form is bringing the obsessions to mind on purpose by listening to recordings of prepared scripts or sometimes trigger words with pauses in between. I encourage clients to immerse themselves with these scripts, listening to them for hours and hours, everyday. It is a highly successful method if you are willing to fully immerse yourself. You may also gradually build up to listening to the scripts as well. I am working now on a video about this method and hope to have it on RU-vid in the next few weeks.

Loved the video so helpful , I just wanted to ask do you know how can I deal with intrusive thoughts ( like I'll just randomly think of a thought like getting hit by a bus while I'm walking on the road and then I'm scared that I'll actually get hit)
@PaigePradkoTherapy
@PaigePradkoTherapy 3 года назад
It is interesting to learn that all of us have these kinds of random thoughts. Neuroscientists have estimated that we have between 50-80,000 thoughts a day. So many of them are these cautious, dangerous thoughts. It is our reaction that matters. People that develop repetitive, unwanted thoughts react in a way that alerts the brain that the thought is so significant, it is crucial for your survival. This is why the thought makes you anxious, and also why it becomes obsessive. Not everyone reacts to these random thoughts. In fact most people do not even catch the thought because they know it is insignificant. Act as if this thought is meaningless. Just background noise that has no significance to you at all. Every time something like this comes up....no reaction...have a “whatever” attitude....it’s just background noise.

Rumination is not really pure O. The rumination is the compulsion. The intrusive thoughts that you iniitially have are the O, the rumination is the mental "handwashing". Its ritualistic. Rumination is a difficult compulsion to stop. This is one of several techniques that you can try. The first step is to notice when you are doing it or having the urge to ruminate and then decide to “not” ruminate or analyze. You cannot stop the initial thought, but, you can stop the over analyzing and over thinking. Here is a playlist for other techniques for Pure O ru-vid.com/group/PL1lUhuKpYUYqKvEwlGXoRPDu_8blhbaq-

In 2 days im visiting a new psychiatrist who's also a therapist and psychologist, maybe he will able to help me get out. Let me share you my story,how "this" began. It was a normal day, like every other before, i think it was march 16 or 17 2021. As i was falling asleep, my eyes closed i think i was starting to dream yet i was still concious. For like 0,5 second i thought i saw a devil. That scared me horribly, like a thunder of fear coming throu my whole body. That was the beginning of my horror, next few days were still ok. Then i started ruminating, thinking maybe i was possessed or something, that i may go to hell and be tortured forever, most horrible thing is that i truly belived that which was a horrible mistake( now i know that such thing does not exist). I started going back to church,(every sunday in person, on all other days online, that made it worse cuz my local church scared me even more with their tales about hell that its a very real threat that doors to heaven are very small and to hell very big) started reading bible even tho i do not agree with many things in it that boggled my mind even more, horribly scared in utter terror, praying obsessively with rosary,i had muscle shakings, breathing troubles, turbo heavy chest,(now i know that those were extreme ocd symptoms) i had troubles with praying cuz of blasphemous thoughts, tons and tons of em. I even went to a exorcist. He did his thing, praying with me saying that he's freeing me and stuff, smeared my forhead makig a cross with some paste/or oil.( that absolutely did nothing) I even told him that im still terribly scared, that literally nothing changed( he said that its impossible). I started researching about blasphemous thoughts on some catholic forum (which was full of completly crazy stuff and theories) but i found one helpful post with term ocd. Then i went to 1st psychiatrist, he diagnosed me with ocd and gave meds, never even mentioned any kind of therapy. And kinda left me with my mess. Then started harmful thoughts, thoughts that i hate my father, that i could harm/kill him, these brought me so much mental suffering, anxeity, then those agressive thoughts went foward, that i could harm my best friend, (a person i would literally jump in front to catch a bullet),then those agresive thoughts started about random people i saw on the street,i always tried my best to stop them, repeating in mind that im not a murderer, that im not a psycho, that im not a bad person, it was horrible and still is. Then another ocd topic came, that i may hurt a child or do something far worse, then depression came, suicidal thoughts, that it would be the best solution to end it all, but i know i can't do that. I have only one life, and noone will give me it back, i cant kill myself because that would also bring horrible suffering to my dad, other family and friends. I went to second psychiatrist(1st visit 40 minutes next ones 20 minutes, not even enough time for me to wrap my head around and tell her whats wrong), she diagnosed me with general fear disorder because i had no physical compulsions like washing hands,etc gave meds, i went to neurologist said about my symptoms, about feeling dizzyness, small uncontrollable muscle spasms, sharp headaches in small parts of my brain, and she only checked and said that my motor functions were ok and literally nothing else. I went and done EEG which said that my brainwaves and electricity in brain is fine, i did a costly MRI head scan, (using google translate for description so it may not be fully correct) "description in teleradiology mode In the subcortical white matter of the left cerebral hemispheres, on the kslpeistosco. on the border fronto-parietal visible, small - up to 2mm, focal changes with increased signal in sector. T2 dependent, FLAIR, no diffusion restriction features - non-specific changes, o vasogenic nature ??, different, inflammatory nature of the changes? Apart from that, the brains have no discernible focal lesions. There are no signs of diffusion disturbance. No hemosiderin deposits are visible. Centrally positioned ventricular system, within the normal width. There is no change in the posterior fossa of the skull. result. image of the brain for further neurological control" Now im stuck in endless and endless ruminations, from the moment i wake up to the moment i loose conciusness and sleep, my brain stuck repeating same thoughts and phrases over and over, i have anxeity about my mental health, that i may develop schitzofrenia from all this or something else(even tho i know that its impossible) analyzing every single thought that comes. And battling it. Not knowing what tought is normal and which one is not normal. In my 11 months of endless suffering with ruminations, unwanted toughts and mental compulsions i feel lost, sad, without hope that i can recover and be my old self, the one i was before my brain broke. It's like i forgot after such long time how it is to think normally, about many things, fluidly from topic to topic. All i think about is obsessions this obsessions that, repeating, "no thats not true" "its impossible" "i want to be healthy again" "what happened to me, why am i like this?" "is there any hope left?" "i cant stop thinking about things i dont want to think about" " am i crazy?" " i need help" "i hope that doctor can fix me" "i want this suffering to end" "i want to regain control" "i want to be normal" "do i have shitzofrenia?or maybe other horrible illness?" . Immense stress, anxeity, wondering about my brain, battling thoughts trying to ruthlessly squash them the moment they show. Constant analysis. Reminding myself of all last year trauma i went throu, thinking that i have lost or may loose my mind. I know that's bad to battle all this yet i can't stop bcs of fear that i may somehow belive those thoughts yesterday after another attack of agressive ocd thoughts i went out to the park and cried uncontrollably lamenting my fate and everything that happened in last year. No matter what i do, (playing games, watching youtube, being at work) im in constant unbreakable loop that i can't escape. Hopefully i can soon get cured and get back to being old me again. Thank you to anyone who went throu this giant wall of text.

Hello. I read your entire comment and I want you to know that you are describing text book OCD, what many refer to as Pure O, obsessive thoughts with no physical compulsions. But, you do have compulsions. They are mental compulsions. You analyze and ruminate and second guess yourself and check to see if you are having those thoughts and praying and wishing them away. Your ocd themes include religious scrupulosity and harm ocd and probably a few others mixed in. Just to educate you but it may unfortunately act as reassurance, you are not going crazy. The most important thing to do is to work with an ocd expert and do ERP. The psychiatrist can help with an SSRI medication to help the process. I have an ocd course in ERP coming out at the end of March. My course will help you do ERP, but, I also suggest working with an ocd specialist. If you would like to learn more about my course that treats these conditions, please send me a message at paigepradko.com. I am so sorry that you are struggling with this. When you notice yourself trying to get some kind of certainty or clarity or analyze or ruminate….identify that mental activity as OCD. Talk back to it. “Hello OCD. I hear you. You can hang around as much as you want in my brain, but, I am not going to analyze you or try to disprove you.” Once you identify it as OCD….that will remind you to not do the mental compulsions and rituals of analyzing. In my I. A.M. method, I recommend Identifying OCD, Allowing it to float in your mind, and Mindfully connect to whatever you were doing before you had the thought. Shift your attention to the here and now and what you are doing.

I mean you won't die cuz of mental illness but,(maybe you can indirectly)when you get back on your feet and feel normal again,you won't be the same as before or as others,,,and even in the worst scenario,just die trying to get better. There are actually people who haven't gone outta there houses for 15 years and all they do were ruminating. I have pure o,adhd,drd,dpd,depression,and lots of other phobias which were born through fornication of depression and panic disorder such as somniphobia(I went too far that I believed I am possessed by a demonic entity,still believe too sorta,maybe perhaps,dunno!)anyway even depersonalisation and derealisation I went through was a byproduct of untreated panic disorder for long,see that is the problem with mental issues! So get help as fast as you can,don't think you tolerate and tomorrow it'll be gone,rather your brain creates pther phobias and not so stream fantasies to put itself to rest! An untreated anxiety can cause pure o and depression after it stays for long. That uneasiness will lead your unconscious to create an artificial world in which in can not feel happy(cuz it ain't real)but can get numb(which is the feeling you get two or three steps before actually going literally suicidal!) And these are very serious,cuz from where healthy people sit it sound farfetched but the way people with mental illnesses perceive world and feel it,and the sense of doom...man can't say enough! I wish you health Caren,you look like a bright girl with a nice sense of humour and productive at times and mostly with good intentions,I can tell. Take care of yourself now🤚🏼🌷

The root chakra blockage can cause all kinds of problem you're having, so try root chakra meditation music on RU-vid. So meditate and initially it may feel impossible. To make it easier, start with meditation by listening to music/powerful frequencies and it will quickly take you into meditative state, which otherwise would take a lot of time if you wanna do it all alone by yourself. I hear you, Jake. It is really tough to stop if you are a ruminator. Sometimes just becoming more aware of it when you are doing it can begin to help you experiment with stopping that brain activity. Then, you will get better at noticing when you begin, and can stop it sooner. There is also a technique where you allow the thoughts you are ruminating about to hang in the background of your mind, while you shift your attention to what you are doing. It is not exactly distraction. We are aware that the thoughts are there and we are not trying to not have the thoughts, we just shift what we are attending to in the moment.

Thank you. I am thinking about doing a video on that theme, because it is often asked about. In my opinion, the thoughts keep coming up for you because you are still analyzing them in your past and trying to figure things out about the relationship or maybe even reassurance yourself about some aspect of the relationship. Instead, when you have the initial thoughts, let them just float there without responding or analyzing them. You will have to do this repetitively. Eventually they will fade if you do not feed the thoughts with more thoughts. Here is my latest video on Mental Compulsions ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mAWc8fmrv6U.html

We as humans are not perfect beings and sometimes we wish we could take back our past actions and behaviors. But, we cannot. To continue in your pain, you are only creating more pain in yourselves and in others. If you had foreseen the events, of course you would have made different choices. But, you did not foresee what would happen. Please forgive yourself and move forward with positive intent in your life. I do believe you are here for a reason. When I am unwell I ruminate about tiny decisions, like what to cook for dinner or what to do on a Saturday. I get stuck in what if mode for hours or days, and then can’t tolerate the noise so don’t decide ( plans wise). Please try meditation. Meditation can cure any disease, be it physical or emotional. Just hear it for a few weeks and you'll see a change.🎉 I've seen a huge change in myself after meditating for a month and a half. So, I am talking with experience.

Things only started getting better when I reminded myself of what I was like before the rumination. I lived happily without these senseless fears cause if they ever did enter my head I would shrug them off. We can’t try to stop it or it stays, we can’t try to ignore it or we ruminate. We have to let it stay and aquire positive thoughts to make them seem smaller. I also looked up about the conscious and subconscious mind to better understand how the brain works. Hi Di. I am partial to my I. A.M. technique. You simply (I) Identify the obsessive thought (worry about your kids), (A) Accept and allow the anxiety. Do not do anything to resist or reduce it. (M) Connect to the present moment through your senses. What do you see, hear, feel with your skin? And then, Move on to what you were doing.

@PaigePradkoTherapy 2 года назад
Hi Isha. Yes, that is what those sneaky intrusive thoughts do. I like the way you identify your thought when you notice it. The next step is to leave it alone. Don’t examine it. Just shift your attention to something else, and move on with your day. Keep shifting your focus if they pop up. You will still be aware of them, but you will not be focusing on those thoughts.

Stopping compulsions like obsessive ruminating breaks the ocd cycle and a person begins to tolerate the anxiety or discomfort. This helps the brain to be less reactive to the original obsessive, intrusive thought, and the thought then fades away or at least no longer causes distress.

@PaigePradkoTherapy 2 года назад
Dr. Greenberg does cause a bit of controversy in the field because he is quite opinionated about rumination and he is against mindfulness and other practices. However, he does add to the field by drawing more attention to OCD and takes a unique approach. I like some of what he has to say, but do not agree with everything. I have somatic (breath awareness OCD) and Dr. Greenberg’s approach did not work for me. I tend to think that people need a bit more help and more treatment options. What works for one person may not work for everyone. The more treatment options we have…the better. Thanks for your comment…it got me thinking 🤔😊
