Hey guys! So today's video is going to be my experience on how to stop puppy biting, or how to train your puppy to stop biting you!
Puppy biting can be very frustrating, especially when you have one of those herding breeds such as this baby Maligator. This guy was a nasty biter. He's always gonna bite my foot, hands, pants, and you just literally couldn't touch him! As you all know, puppy biting is one of the most common problems when you brought a puppy home. Cause puppies are always going to bite, they explore the world differently than us humans, using their nose and mouth. One of the most common method that I personally think is super effective is redirection. Redirection simply means that when your puppy is trying to bite you, redirect them using bite toys, such as ropes, bite tugs, old cloths, or other chew toys that you can find on your local pet store. Because as we all know, puppies are going to through a teething phase, so puppy biting is a natural behavior. And there is actually no way we can STOP it, so redirecting will work. It's like you cannot stop them from biting, so make them bite something else.
Second thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn't encourage your puppy to play rough with you, here I'm showing a video of 7 weeks old kai, which I literally couldn't touch. No, I wasn't encouraging him to bite me, just wanted to show you how a nasty biter he was. But as he grew older, I never try to put my fingers to his mouth, encourage him to bite me or any kinds of rough play. What I did was giving him new bite toys, chew toys, and chew treats, while taking the opportunity to teach him what he can and cannot bite. Playing tug is a great option, it creates a good relationship between you and your dog, it builds their drive, strength, and confidence as well. You can also buy your dog Kong Toys, which I personally love. They are made from strong rubber, and you can stuff treats inside of them. So it can encourage your puppy to bite and chew in a positive way, instead of biting your hands or the furniture.
So again, just let puppies be puppies, be very patient and gentle with them, I heard many people say when they bite you pinch their tongue or nose so that they feel uncomfortable and stop biting, but I don't know, I don't think this will work, and I never heard professional dog trainers give this advice. Puppies will usually stop biting from the age of 4-6 months, or when they finally fully developed their adult teeth. But you know, every puppies are different. Cause we didn't have this problem with Rex my Rottweiler. He destroys 0 furniture in the house, and literally stopped biting hands at the age of 3 months. But on the other hand Kai was a nasty biter. You know Belgian Malinois' are called Maligators for a reason, so I wasn't quite surprised. Kai stopped biting hands and feet around 4 months old, and finally stop biting furniture around 6 months old. The stage when he kinda understands what he can and cannot bite. He's almost 10 months old now and technically still a puppy. A puppy that has completed their teething phase. But we still need to work on the basic commands, most importantly the leave it command when he found something new on the floor.
