What's uppp everyone!!! In this video I break down the DO's and DON'Ts of dog toys, more specifically for the Belgian Malinois! I show you all the toys I personally use with my Malinois and WHY! As well as what toys you should never use, and WHY!!
Most toys sold for dogs are down right dangerous to dogs!! On top of that create terrible habits!!
Let me know what toys you like to use when you're NOT TRAINING with your dog in the comments! Would love to hear from you!
Thank you everyone as always for watching, SUBSCRIBING, COMMENTING, LIKING, SHARING!!!! Big stuff being worked on for this channel!!

It’s nice to see a trainer giving his working dog access to toys when the dog is not working, but being thoughtful about which toys. I’ve been having lots of good conversations with fellow dog enthusiast friends about deprivation of resources for sport / working dogs and it’s great to see something like this!
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger 2 года назад
Of course it’s important to not spoil your dog and give them tons of toys all the time, BUT! If you’re having to deprive them of play in order to ‘make them work better’, maybe you’re not as good of a trainer as you thought! 🙏🏼🙏🏼 Thanks for watching and sharing this!

I’ve had German Shepherds for over 30 years. I have always given them horse flavored jolly balls. Every dog loved them. I now also have a Belgium Malinois and introduced it to him and just like all the shepherds I’ve had he loves it. It’s great when they play tug a war. Yes, it’s only good for a few months but it’s well worth it. Plus even when they shred it up they still like to run around with it in there mouth. Now, when it’s really shredded up and I catch them chewing it into pieces I then disregard. It’s only allowed when I’m around. Great toy! I have always recommended to my friends.

Yes! We have the Jollyball soccer ball and it is so durable. My husband likes to do soccer footwork and play keep away with our white swiss shepherd and she is obsessed with it. Though I don't think we taught her how to play with the ball right... She will try to grab the ball and run away with it by kicking it.

LOL love your video's - We had Wick (our Malanois X) laying down calm then he heard the Squeaky toy section and has to play with toys now. At least he has a little bit of an off switch. Keep up the good work. Great tips and tricks, you have been a lifesaver.

When the squeaky toy came on my foster Malinois perked her head up so fast and those ears. Just like radar dishes. I'm surprised she didn't investigate. Although we did just play fetch for and hour and a half and did some training on the way home, so she might be tired? Relaxation time is over once I get up though. I am definitely here for ideas on how to keep her busy by herself though. She just wants to play fetch all the time.

Not to rain on the parade but fetch for that long is highly dangerous. 10-15 min max. Many Malinois have died this way 🙏🏼

Have you got a link to that slightly squishier Jolly Ball? My Malinois won't touch things that are completely solid like those hard plastic balls. Being able to get his teeth into it is what's fun for him. I think he'd like the football too since it has some give to it. Chewy has some Jolly Balls but I'm not sure which are the hard ones and which are the rubbery ones.

Awesome video, as always! I do have a couple of not so small questions for you, if it's too much just forget I asked! ...I have a 7yo Mal x lab who I've had since a pup... He's got some mental issues that we've been able to work around for the most part, but by far his worst problem is that he is hyperkinetic and as a result has a REALLY short attention span, rarely sits still and it seems the more exercise he gets, the more hyperactive he gets. He lives for food, but anything, and I mean ANYTHING that could distract him, will (literally could be a lump of moss on a rock or a random stray bottle cap! You name it, my boy will be distracted by it!) then he'll freak out and get scared/hyper fixated/frustrated (or a mix of all 3) and I won't be able to get him back to focusing on the task at hand. He resource guards at random times and there is nothing we have tried so far that will break him of this habit and I've been "nibbled" a few times because of it... He is very insecure around people and will bark a lot and snap if people don't back off from him when asked to. I've asked many trainers but a lot of them refuse to help him as he isn't "neurotypical"... Do you have any ideas on what I could do to improve his focus and stop him guarding things? (I can play with tug toys with him and there are no issues whatsoever: tell him "give" and he'll drop it in my hand immediately. However If he has anything other than a tug in his mouth, the only time he'll let go of it is to snap at whoever is trying to retrieve the item. I've tried multiple time to give him balls without ropes... put it like I have to check how many fingers I have left once I've FINALLY managed to retrieve the ball!... Leave the rope on, he's fine. Gives it back every time.) He's also food aggressive and will sometimes even guard treats IN MY HAND and will either bite me and try to steal the treat or walk off growling with his tail up over his back and his hackles up... Then there's other times you wouldn't know he has any issues whatsoever...)

@@AndyKrueger haha sorry! got a little carried away 😅 shortened version: do you have any tips on how I can stop my 7yo malinois/lab mix guarding everything/anything and improve his focus when it's needed? (he has hyperkinesis- similar to adhd in people- and as a result, all the trainers I've asked so far refuse to help.) Also, in regards to the guarding, he knows the "give" command and I can play tug with him with various toys and he doesn't guard those. I can also give him something to hold or ask him to pick something up for me if I drop it and he will no problem... but if he picks something up he's not meant to and I ask him to "give", he'll snap at me and walk away growling...

One of your best videos ever....because this stuff is so important! Training stuff is great but this is about safety. 90% of the dog toys at the store are dangerous pieces of junk! People assume if its in the pet section is must be safe for dogs, and its so far from the truth. Last week I bought some "dog safe" balls that look like tennis balls and in less than an hour it was shredded and completely ripped to pieces with wads of undigestible fuzz laying everywhere! It was no longer a ball! Definitely NOT dog safe! No more toys in the crate in this house! What's your opinion on letting them have a rawhide or bone to gnaw on while in the crate? Its relaxing for them and stress relieving, as opposed to a toy that would be more likely to fire them up and promote destruction.

I bought one for my dog when she’s was a puppy and yes they love it so much. But now it has trimmed like 6 of her teeth including her k9 teeth. That’s because they chew on it so much and we barely noticed. Now I can almost see her tooth root which will cost thousands of dollars to fix 😞

Hi Andy! It’s my second time watching this video (rinse & repeat for me too 😂). You mentioned if training for hunting or tracking you might not give the dog a ball for free. I just started my 7 month old female working gsd in Schutzhund. Tracking is involved in the sport and the club really focuses on building ball drive to help with obedience and bitework. I always use a specific ball when we are working. None of her other balls resemble it and when I get it out she knows it’s go time. What are your thoughts on this? What should I give her for free? Is it your sport that doesn’t focus on ball drive or is it your preference? Hit me with it, I won’t be offended!! 😂 (I will ask on Patreon also just in case you don’t see my question here)
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger 2 года назад
Hey! Great question! If it were me, I’d only give her that one particular ball when you’re Training. No balls or toys any other time. It’s my personal preference to not have/ develop crazy ball drive. Keep up the good work! 💪🏼🙏🏼

Hey Andy. We adopted a Great Dane puppy and she's not going to be a working dog but I do want to make sure that ball play and tug play are a game between her and I. I took away her rope toy but she's almost 5 months now so I think she's going through teething and I got her a thick but soft chew toy from fluff and tough (no squeaker and durable right now) that helps entertain her and not have her nibble on us when we are hanging out. She only gets it when she is supervised so im not worried about stuffing and she doesn't seem to tear she just likes to chomp on it. Do you think it's a bad idea and will ruin the tug play? She's still really interested in the soft tug that I got with the elastic on it but I am definitely working on the having her come back to me which I can do with some audible noises
@uradumby25

I got Michael Ellis's raising your puppy DVD and just through playing the treat retrieve game he has the first time I threw a ball she brought it right back so that is surprisingly good already.

How long would you recommend self exercising for or "playing"? I would assume that varies from dog to dog, but I wasn't sure if there is too much that can be crossed? I have GSDs and we use the jolly balls and chuckits. The big one with the handle does wonders.
